From Booklist

Greg Heffley’s eighth adventure (but who’s counting?) centers on his relationship with his best friend, Rowley—more specifically, the demise of that relationship when Rowley gets a girlfriend. At first, Greg tries to insert himself into the mix, but he soon tires of Abigail’s pathological control (she changes Rowley’s hairstyle) and fussy propriety (she won’t let him eat off of the cafeteria floor). And so Greg must navigate the minefield of middle school, with its hero points, dollar-store sneakers, and the looming shadow of summer school, all by himself. Without a sidekick, Greg spends more time at home, suffering the attentions of his “colorful” extended family, like Aunt Audra, who drags him along to a psychic visit. Greg begins consulting Rodrick’s forgotten Magic 8 Ball and thinks maybe that will turn his luck around. As ever, Kinney strikes his comic target in the bull’s-eye, exaggerating the trials of adolescence just enough to make them real while deftly exposing the insecurities behind Greg’s bravado with his super, simple drawings. Will Greg and Rowley make up? Either way, devotees need not worry; there is plenty more angst in store. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Kinney’s books are best-sellers on every list out there, and his rabid fans will be chomping at the bit to get another taste of the Wimpy Kid. Grades 5-8. --Thom Barthelmess

#2,033 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Once you start this series, you know you have to read each new one! And you know I am waaay to old for this stuff, but it is funny and it brings back some great middle school memories. I guess I am not alone judging from the number of reviews already out for a book released less than a week ago. Pretty quick read as usual and this was one of the funnier ones. When does #9 come out? And no, don't want to hear comments that this is the last one - inside page says COMING SOON - More Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

All of these books have what would be considered slightly gross stuff in it. Fortunately that was enough to get my two oldest kids hooked.I'd rarely been able to get oldest to read anything, then as these came out he could hardly wait for them to arrive. It also got him interested in reading other books that were similar. He read these books long after they became too easy for him.My second kid had all 8 of these available when he got to the point of not wanting to read, and it only took book 1 to get him hooked. While he doesn't read these any more, he does love manga. So I'm very grateful for these books to spur his interest in reading.

This is an accelerated reader (AR) book - reading level 5.5 - AR Pts: 3.0Greg's best friend, Rowley, has ditched him, and finding new friends in middle school is proving to be a tough task. Will a roll of the dice turn things around, or is Greg's life destined to be just another hard-luck story? Read to find out!My son bought 3 books with his own birthday money and this was one of them (they were all Wimpy Kid Books)! He's a big Wimpy Kid fan and he was excited to get his hands on this one. A funny book, hard to put down and a very good series. Another Good Book in the Series!

It was pretty much similar to all the other books. It's not one of those books that you get hooked to, and can't wait for the movie to come out like the Hunger Games series and the Divergent series. But its better for younger kids around 3rd grade or so. Maybe older kids might read it just for fun or if they're bored or something like that. But I kinda think the author is running out of ideas since this is the 8th book and all. It doesn't have very much suspense, though. And, that's the biggest thing I look forward to into a book. So, if you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, I think this might be okay to read. Thank you for reading my opinion of this book.

There's something quite extraordinary about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books. I tutor a lot of kids, ranging from grades K-12, and so many of these kids, especially the ones in Grades 2-8 love this series, and that is special indeed. My 8.5-year-old daughter is a great fan too, and after reading several of the books including this latest in the series, I can see what all the fuss is about. The stories of Greg Heffley and his misadventures with his friends as they go through their school years make for fun and engaging reading, and the author's blend of satire and cartoon drawings makes this something that can be enjoyed by both younger children, adolescents, and even adults. True, Greg Heffley is not always the most sympathetic of characters, but even with all his flaws, there's an undefinable quality about this kid that just sucks you right into whatever drama he's experiencing. In "Hard Luck", Greg is placed in a quandary when his best friend Rowley ditches him. Who is to be Greg's new best friend? Finding a best friend in middle school is not going to be easy and when Greg decides to leave it to luck, well, things start happening Wimpy Kid style! A fun and entertaining read!

We loved this series and added this book to our collection as a replacement (my son lent his copy to someone at camp and never got it back). If you have a hard time getting your kid to read, then go ahead and get this Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Its funny and clever. The author is spot on with his humor. You will love it, even with a kid around.

My 6 year old son began reading "Wimpy Kid" books just as he was learning to read. Many times I would allow him to read before bed and would hear him laughing hysterically in his room. Now, 7 years old, he has read all of them and often will pick them up and read them again. They are silly, but the appeal to his age demographic was actually amazing to me. I didn't have to make him read... he wanted to read. And he loved them all. I would recommend the entire series to any parent of a child who is learning and becoming comfortable with reading comprehension.

Greg and Rowley usually get into arguments a lot in the books then they come back to being best friends again. Well it's good that they've stopped that from the Long Haul to the Meltdown. (At least for now)

My 11-year-old is not a reader but the Wimpy Kid books are my go-to. He reads all of them a couple of times but this is the first time he's ever read one three times (and counting) in rapid succession. As soon as he finishes it, he starts it again! He said it's his favorite book of all the Wimpy Kid books because the story is less general than the rest. I may have to buy him a new copy before the year's out, and I don't mind as long as he's READING!

This is not a bad book. Nor is it particularly poorly written. I just think it is a bit misguided. This is my first Jennie Allen book and, after reading many glowing reviews (and a couple of not so glowing ones), I was ready to jump right in. I am no stranger to journaling (I understood from a review or two that this would be necessary) so I was poised to dig, journal and discover what it means to dream again -- all with Jennie Allen cheering me along the way.And that’s exactly what she does. Early on in the book, I felt understood -- after all, she too was a wife and mom who struggled with a sense of purpose and that restless feeling we all seem to get in our lives at some point or another. Jennie felt like a friend who understood (who would love to be discussing your hopes and dreams over coffee right this instant, but simply couldn’t), and the conversational tone of this book makes it both engaging and easy to read. Jennie is nothing if not sincere. She sincerely wants you to realize that God has uniquely equipped you with gifts, and she sincerely wants you to passionately pursue God’s call and purpose for your life. And these are very good things. The journaling activities are meant to help you discern what your giftings and calling might be. You were asked to write about your own story, highlighting unique instances when you felt joy and delight in what you were doing, and she also directs you to see how God might use suffering in your life to fuel your passions or to enable you to help others who suffer. She encourages you to write about the places you encounter regularly and how you might live more meaningfully and purposefully as you engage with those places. In short, she helps you to connect the dots of your life: your gifts, the people in your life who need you (and whom you need), the suffering you have endured, the places you regularly encounter and the passions you have all to help you pinpoint what your purpose might be.And she cheers you, she is behind you, and she shares countless stories about countless, amazing friends who have died, come back to life or almost died and who now are living lives on mission, and she wants to help you to do the same -- to not miss it, or to bury the gifts God has given you because of fear. She lived that way for a while, but now she is “running hard toward God” and, incidentally, so is her husband, Zac, who wasn’t always on board with her pursuing her dreams. But now says he is.Chapter 21, “When Women Dream”, is where my former enthusiasm began to unravel. Framed a certain way, it seems possible to justify almost anything. Being away from your four children for extended periods of traveling and working is perfectly acceptable so long as you are doing it for the kingdom. Why should we have any less access to pursuing our dreams than our husbands do? After all, God gave us dreams and giftings too. This sounds eerily like a Christianized version of a worldly ideology. It made me feel like Jennie was using a very old, yet cleverly disguised strategy: “God didn’t really say…” Why else would she basically say it was okay for her to charge full speed ahead in her career (with what she feels is God’s approval, of course), candidly admit that sometimes her husband feels “eclipsed” and that she often absent in the home (to the extent that she gets help from sitters, cleaners and administrative assistance) with absolutely no reference to Titus 2:5 whatsoever?I am also concerned that what is being further eclipsed here is the matter of daily, ordinary, unsung faithfulness. Attention to the common, boring, monotonous, unremarkable with remarkable regularity, devotion, a daily (often moment-by-moment) dying to self for the sake of others -- not for praise we may receive presently, nor the thrill or sudden “rush” of knowing we are walking in our “purpose”, but out of sincere devotion to Christ and out of our love for Him. I am concerned that women reading this book will think their purpose “out there” somewhere -- something they must leave to do or look for somewhere else. Often what is required of us is right beneath our noses, but fails to look appealing, because we are fickle mortals and our ‘restless’ feelings are often still just feelings, and we should be wise in how we respond to them, interpret them, and where we allow them to lead us.I also believe that simple discontentment is a far greater issue that people in general, and women in particular, grapple with. We Christians are not exempt from the inner tuggings that tell us we deserve more, were meant for more (than this) and that it's our God-given "right" to pursue more. We needn't even leave the church to find support for this sort of belief system. It is a far greater challenge, indeed, to embrace contentment with what God has apportioned us, and to do so will always be swimming against the current in today's culture.I realize it is often difficult to be discerning with so many well-meaning Christian books coming at us, with a thousand different voices about what is right or what is advisable. The Holy Spirit and God’s immutable Word must ultimately lead us in the right direction. It seems to me that the vast majority of women live ordinary lives where they can and should use the gifts God has given them. But how and when they use those gifts is a matter of great discernment that should be made with much prayer, counsel and adherence to God’s Word.

As others have indicated, this is a thought-provoking book that you need to take your time with. However, I wish I had been warned not to buy the Kindle edition. A large portion of this book involves reflection and journaling, and there are charts and diagrams within the book where you are supposed to write. These are not replicated well in the Kindle edition, so even if you try to complete the information in your personal journal, it's hard to know what the diagrams look like.

I had been wrestling with the idea that God was moving me into another season but struggled with really accepting that and all that would accompany a shift. This book was the perfect encouragement I needed to finally take the step of faith that God had been calling me to do. I normally breeze over "exercises" in books but not this time. I found the journaling exercises at the end of each chapter extremely helpful and I was honestly surprised at what they revealed to me. If you are at a point in your life where you know you were meant for more, please read this book! It will be the catalyst for change in your life!

I received the "Restless DVD Bible Study" by Jennie Allen, complimentary from the gracious team at BookSneeze. I in turn agreed to write this review. Well, I can tell you that it is my joy to write this review as I was anticipating receiving this study since I found out Jennie completed it. I was introduced to Jennie Allen a few years ago when she released her first bible study, "Stuck" (AMAZING STUDY), and I have been able to read and complete her following books and bible studies. Jennie's "Restless" study is based on the life of Joseph from the Bible, and she leads participants through a practical plan to identify the "threads" of their lives. Jennie hopes that through the study women (and men) will find out how to weave those "threads" together for God and His glory and purposes. Some of the topics that are covered during the 8 week study are; God's story, gifts, suffering, people and passions. The format of this study is different from Jennie's last two studies as she is teaching before a live audience, and some of her friends share their stories on the DVD. I have loved her last two studies so it is hard for me to say that this one is better, but I can say it is just as good and the messages Jennie teach are powerful and life changing. I really truly believe that if a person lets God lead her through this study her life could be changed forevermore. I believe Jennie has been gifted by God, and she is one of the voices of our generation that is calling people back to God. She is passionate for people to know Jesus and experience a relationship with Him that is life changing. She is true to the "Gospel" message and she will tell you the truth even when it is hard. Jennie has stated that her heart is to equip and unleash the followers of Jesus to live and love Him and others. I understand that there are those that may read this review that don't have a relationship with God and maybe curious as to what all of this "talk" is about. Although this study is geared toward the follower of Jesus, I believe it could be used to introduce someone to what God's Story is all about. I am sure it is clear from my review, but I highly recommend this study by Jennie Allen and I cannot wait to read the paperback book when it releases.

As many other readers have said, this is not a typical Dee Henderson book. I was intrigued by the jacket overview and decided to take a chance on something different than the author normally writes. A quarter of the way through this book, I had a check in my spirit and decided to look at the "special thanks" section in the back of the book. At least 80% of those listed are Prosperity Doctrine pastors. At that point I put the book down and put it in my recycle bin as I would not want anyone else to read a book in which scripture is taken completely out of context and slapped together in such a way that it sounds biblical. This was very disappointing as all of her other books rarely take scripture out of context. I would not recommend this book.

Although this is sold as fiction, it reads like a Bible study. There are pages and pages of Bible verses taken out of context to promote not only a healing doctrine (everyone is supposed to be healed) but also a resurrection doctrine (because of the cross, we aren't supposed to die). Not true. Jesus died for our sins and when we accept that free gift we will have eternal life. For most of us, our healing comes then. God does choose to heal when it's for the good of the kingdom but it is not a guarantee or right that we have. Our job is to glorify God in all we do and help others find salvation through Jesus. I have loved Dee Henderson's books since the very first one and will continue to read them but these "blue books" are a mistake.

I am over 1/2 way through this book the 2nd time, reading it with my Bible open in my lap checking every scripture. None are taken out of context to prove a point, they are what they say. I love this book. I absolutely believe she hits the explanations of things right on the head, in a way that makes so much sense, and so far I have not found ANYthing that contradicts scripture. I have read the other reviews, and clearly a couple of those people are not as hungry for God as I am, this is exactly what I've been looking for, in fact I ordered 3 more copies to give to dear friends. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and he wants us to be healed and live healthy. He always has. This book will help me receive that gift of grace. Thank you Dee!

Very disappointed in this book. I have read a few of Dee Henderson's novels and have found them interesting and rewarding. They have had good stories with a Christian underpinning that uplifted the spirit and made the reader think about their faith . This book basically had no story. It was like an extended Bible study for the entire book. It was also very repetitive. When Connie would give her lesson to Ryan either in person or through one of her audio tapes he would do a study of his own with notes and repeat almost the exact same thing she had taught. Even though there was basically no fiction novel to this book there was also seriously flawed scriptural misuse.Ms Henderson should have just written a non-fiction book espousing the scripture as she (or her mentors who she may be speaking for) has interpreted them. There are some very good points but many dubious interpretations.I actually felt duped by purchasing this book, that the author wanted her views as she has interpreted them to be heard and felt like a 'novel' would be the surest way to draw someone in..

I have read and loved Dee Henderson novels since I first discovered her in 2012. This book is her best. While it is full of scripture she has delivered the message in true Dee Henderson form. I have long believed the truth she has written here. It is way past time for the body of Christ to receive our complete gift of healing the same as salvation. I applaud you Ms Henderson. Well written and truth delivered admists, I’m sure, much pressure from Satan to stop it. I look forward to her next book. And I’m already buying this book for my daughter and anyone else the Holy Spirit directs me to. I love how she uses some of the previous characters again. I’ve become so familiar with them sometimes I forget they aren’t real people. Only problem I see is that she can’t write faster. It’s always so hard to wait for each new book

Wonderful. VERY TRUE TO SCRIPTURE. Any thing Dee Henderson writes is great.Have almost all her books, what I don't have I have read.Look for her next one. To far in-between her books, They are so good.

Dee Henderson warned her readers in the book's description on her website and in her email newsletter that this book would be different. So I went into it with an open mind even though it didn't sound like something I would have picked up from any other author.I did not enjoy the new style of this book. I missed the male/female romance. And I missed the action. But I did enjoy that Paul and Ann Falcon were in the book along with Joe and Kelly Baker! It is always fun to be reunited with old friends. And I did like Ryan a lot.But I'll be honest the fact that most of the book was Connie teaching Ryan about scripture and her experiences with healing and resurrecting was not what I enjoy finding in a fiction book. I don't mind if part of a book is more of a sermon, but this was a little too much for me. I think I'll stick with re-reading her other books when I need a Henderson fix.

God's truths are always impactful requiring our faith, trust and confidence that He has gifted us with a Grace that is alive and well and active today as it was when Jesus walked the earth. Dee Henderson reminds us of these truths, reminding us they are very much ours now.

“There is nothing in this world more important than family.” Family means the world to both Dmitry and Royal as neither of them had one growing up. But, the sins of the past haunt them both especially Dmitry and there are people who will do anything to exact their revenge. What those enemies don't know is that Dmitry will do ANYTHING for his family including giving his life. Royal knows that her husband has committed grievous sins in the past and that he is considered to be a monster by many, but he is her monster whom she loves with all of her heart. In the end of this suspenseful story, she showed just how much she was willing to do to save her husband as well. Royal, in the beginning of this story, was battling restless sleep nightmares, depression, alcohol and drug addiction as a form of rape related PTSD, committed upon her by Ivan, Dmitry's psychotic brother. This was about to destroy her marriage until she saw the possibility of another woman coming on to her beloved husband. The thought of losing him that way, snapped her out of the personal hell hole she was in. The play that Dorian made for Royal sent Dmitry into a rage and he was willing to take the entire city out to keep that from happening. In this story, we see the characters develop into stronger individuals who vow their love and loyalty for each other and family, including Anatoly, who's just coming into his own as the new head of the Medlov crime family. I loved this book as well as all the previous ones in the Medlov series. I just love Dmitry's and Royal's love for each other. It is so deep and addicting. Great job Latrivia, as always!

I have read this book three times and have just now decided to leave a review. I am truly addicted to the Medloc family. The love Dimitry has for Royal is beyond powerful. Royal went through hell and back and just the dull journey of her depression, fear and self hate made me adore her even more. Commitment was too less of a word for what Dimitry felt for Royal. I'm going through the entire series again and to still feel the emotions tells me that Latrivia' writing is phenomenal!

Poor job by the author in the second book of the series. Spoilers......The last word from the previous book had a happy and pregnant Royal going off into the sunset. First chapter had her suffering from the rape and a total disconnect from her family for 3 years. Enter Victoria.....no real history yet a pivotal role in the book ( approximately 35% of the book) with significant relationships with the main characters. Really?. Now we have jealous Royal, who is jealous enough to change her pill popping, alcoholic behavior; however, the love of her child or man was not enough incentive for her to try to change.....Really? In addition, am I supposed to believe that her she could cure her 3 year addictive behavior in 1 day, but refused to deal with what happened with Ivan for 3 years. Really? In addition, am I supposed to believe that she was/is growing into her own? What "own" except to become a delusional, disingenuous , immature and unrealistic she dog. And I do not care how many times the author tells me that she is beautiful, she was incredibly immature and a she dog. Am I to understand that because she was beautiful that I should accept or understand her behavior.? If so, make me understand by developing the character and allowing me to walk in her shoes. I might not like; however, I can understand and appreciate. There was a reason she had the luxuries in her life...figure it out and deal. In addition, she still has not fully accepted the really of the H. And Dmitry.....is he the baddest mafia boss in the world or simply totally pu##ywhipped? Really? Really? And the working relationship between Victoria and Royal after all that transpired between them.....really? So inconsistent, so disappointed....There is potential; however, extremely poor execution.

I think this book showed what Royal is capable of. In Dmitry's closet we learn that Royal killed a man to protect her sister and in this book she will do anything to protect her family. The one thing I couldn't understand is why Royal and Dmitry couldn't talk and be honest with each other. They wait until everything blows up to finally trust each other. I guess there is good in that because it proves that even when things look bad on the part of either one of them they will still love and trust each other above anyone else.Dmitry is such a Boss!! He is the right mix of bad and good. He can be ruthless yet loving with his wife, daughter, and even son. Anatoly has so much to learn from Dmitry because Dmitry is so organized and strategic with everything he does. He thinks things through and then executes it. As much as this story was about Royal getting over her traumatic experience, we get to Dmitry as the powerful and caring man that he is.I'll be honest and say it was a bit hard for me to get over what happened to Royal. Even though it has been three years it was just awful that he had to go through it and I think it explains how people who go through what she went through feel. You get to understand more of the their pain....pain that no one should have to experience. One thing I didn't like was Anatoly's relationship with Victoria. I just wanted her to go away....not that I hated her character because she did start to come around towards the end of the book but I just couldn't stand his infatuation with her. It might be because she was a bit tainted in my eyes from what she tried to do to the Medlov family and I couldn't get past it enough for me to like Anatoly to be with her.The only normal person in that family is Anya LOL and I love her relationship with Anatoly. Her interaction with everyone was great....even with Victoria. I think even Anya was suspicious of Victoria.Love this series so far. I'm practically hooked and I hope I will not be disappointed with the next one.

Jeet Kune Dō (henceforth, JKD) is Bruce Lee’s “styleless style” of martial arts. Its literal meaning is “the way of the intercepting fist.” However, Lee cautions one against attaching too much significance to that name (or any name) in the book’s final chapter. Long before “Mixed Martial Arts” became a household word, Lee was constructing this fighting system that borrowed heavily from the Western traditions of boxing, fencing (conceptually speaking), and wrestling as well as from Kungfu, Savate, and Judō/Jujutsu. While JKD employs techniques and concepts from these systems, Lee remained adamant that no good came of organized styles built on fixed forms. In fact, that might be said to be the central theme of the book. That is, each fighter should begin with sound fundamentals and build an approach that is ultimately his or her own.“The Tao of Jeet Kune Do” is an outline of the martial art. In many ways, it looks like and reads like Lee’s personal notebook. It’s illustrated with crude (but effective) hand drawings of the type one would see in a personal journal, and they are annotated with hand-written notes. (My biggest criticism is that on the Kindle version the graphics are largely unreadable. I’d recommend you get the print edition if you can, which is large-format paperback as I recall.) The book combines a philosophy of martial arts with nitty-gritty discussion of the technical aspects of combat. The philosophical chapters bookend the technical ones.As others have pointed out, there’s not much that is new in either the philosophical discussions or the technical ones. Lee’s value-added is in how he states these concepts, how he selects the concepts of value (informed largely by a love of simplicity and a hatred of dogma), and the weight lent to the lessons by Lee’s great success story—albeit in a life far too short. Lee was a man of charisma, and one who approached endeavors with gravitas. Now, I can imagine some readers saying, “Why are you recommending a book on real fighting by a movie martial artist? Would you recommend a book on how to conduct gall bladder surgery from someone because they were on the first two seasons of ER? Would you take martial arts lessons from Keanu Reeves because his moves looked pretty nifty in The Matrix?”I’ll admit that there is nothing about making kungfu movies that makes one particularly competent to give advice on close-quarters combat. However, as I said, Lee seemed to devote himself entirely to everything he did. Consider the Bruce Lee physique, which seems so common place among actors today (no doubt in part chemical and in part owing to live-in Pilates coaches) was virtually unseen in the 70’s. Yeah, he probably had good genes, but he must have trained like a maniac as well. Lee’s constant mantra of “simplicity” lends him a great deal of credibility. (It should be noted that pragmatism is not a virtue in the movie-making industry.) Lee demonstrates that he’s given a lot of thought to the subject and done the training when he discusses technical concepts. For example, while he gives high praise to Western boxing and emulates boxing moves in some regards, he also notes that boxers are insufficiently cautious owing to the rules/equipment of their sport (a comment—it should be noted--that can be leveled against any sport martial art.)The technical material is organized in four chapters. The chapter on “tools” deals with the techniques of striking, kicking, and grappling. A chapter on preparations explains Lee’s thoughts on faints, parries and manipulations. There is a chapter on mobility that discusses footwork and various types of evasions. The last technical chapter discusses the approaches to attack, focusing heavily on JKD’s five types of attack.“The Tao of Jeet Kune Do” is undeniably repetitive, but that repetition has value in hammering home key concepts. It’s also consistent with the JKD philosophy of not getting into a great deal of complexity, but rather drilling home the basics. There’s an old martial arts adage that says, “One should not fear the man who knows 10,000 techniques as much as the one that has done one technique 10,000 times.” This seems apropos here. Besides, the concepts that are repeated are often worth memorizing. e.g. Simplify. Eliminate ego. Avoid fixed forms. Be natural. Don’t think about building up as much paring away.I’d recommend this book for martial artists of any style. Non-martial artists may find the philosophical chapters interesting, but may not get much out of the list-intensive technical chapters.

In my opinion Bruce Lee was an absolute genius and understood life in a way not many others if any will be able to conceptualize even. Before he died, he passed out and was hospitalized for cereberal edema which from what I gather is his brain was filing with fluid and was swelling. 2 months later he complained of a headache and collapsed again and died. Whatever they say the medical reason was, I think he was just so smart, his brain couldn't take it. That, or he was killed. Those are just my opinions. There are several theories of how/why he died but, back to the book. The story behind this is, Bruce Lee broke his back and had to stay in bed for a long time. That's when he wrote it. The style of martial arts he created is a physical expression/reflection of his philosophies/beliefs. That's basically what this book is. If you have studied up on Bruce Lee and are into truth, this book is for you. I wish it wasn't based around his creation of Jeet Kune Do, but I just wanted in the mind of Bruce Lee and that's what I got. I'm not a martial artist but this book is full of wisdom that can be applied to all aspects of life. I super recommend this to anyone interested in philosophy, truth, bettering themselves, understanding life more, etc. Bruce Lee was the man. RIP.

No matter what style of martial arts you practice, you can learn something by reading this book. Bruce Lee was a genius and way ahead of this time. He studied boxing, fencing, and various martial arts and combined what he considered to be the best attributes from each into his own style of Jeet Kune Do. This is an explanation of the martial art from the founder himself. A masterpiece!

The book is helpful if you have some martial arts experience. The book only have sketches, no photos, but I still found it to be helpful. A lot of the blocking techniques and strikes I have being doing for many years, when I studied martial arts in Okinawa Japan. I would recommend this book to a friend. This is a book you want to keep and refer to it from time to time..

One of my students borrowed the book and never returned it. Purchased another one as I enjoyed the techniques previously but liked to read the philosophy portions again.

If you want to get into the mind of Bruce Lee, this is the book for you. Unlike Bruce Lee, this book does not follow “be water, my friend”. It does not always “flow” well. It’s a compilation of thoughts, knowledge and ideas.Tao (path), as you may not be aware, once you define the “path”, you have strayed from it. So don’t consider the entire book as it “must be”, but as a guide to “could be”.Lots of repetition, but that is good for hammering things into your brain.Advice...read, perform, practice...and most of all, adapt what you learn (make it yours)

This is Bruce Lee's own thoughts on his development of the Jeet Kune Do fighting philosophy. It's invaluable to anyone who wants to learn or is currently studying Jeet Kune Do as it shows precisely how Bruce Lee thought. Since Jeet Kune Do is not a fighting style but a set of principals for development fighting and conditioning technique, this can help you with one of the most important parts of being a student of Jeet Kune Do: developing it, expanding it, and shedding whatever you find is not helpful to develop your own Jeet Kune Do.The book observes fighting from many angles, including strategic principals, philosophy, conditioning, and specific techniques and advice on how to use those techniques. Much of the technical advice is not that easy to follow without knowing or training in fighting yourself, but that is to be expected. No one should take this book as a substitute for learning from a teacher. Rather, this book is an excellent companion for those who are learning or want to learn the art of fighting.

I've read all of Evan's books.. each one is better than the last. City in Shadow is no exception... it keeps you guessing until the very last moment.. and just when you think you've figured it all out... you don't ! ... always keeps you guessing... and keeps you up late wanting to finish it! I love this entire series of books! EXCELLENT!!

'City in Shadow' Delivers Quirky, Rapid-Fire Big Apple Mystery EntertainmentEvan Marshall's "City in Shadow" (Severn House Publishers, 192 pages, $27.95), the latest in his Hidden Manhattan Mystery series, features an amateur detective with the probably the most unusual day job in fiction, Anna Winthrop, a Department of Sanitation supervisor.Anna's the daughter of a billionaire Connecticut businessman who's appalled at her choice of careers, especially since her siblings are a lawyer, a doctor and a stockbroker. Anna was a debutante who gave it all up to join the Sanitation Department on an entry-level basis -- although the reader can suspend disbelief long enough to realize that few garbage collectors have the financial resources to call in sick and fly down to Florida, as Anna does in "City in Shadow."The latest in a series ("Death Is Disposable," "Evil Justice," "Dark Alley," ) that gets its name from Marshall's placing his characters in a relatively unknown, unusual architectural treasure in Manhattan, "City In Shadow" includes a number of plots and subplots in a relatively short book. The main plot has Anna investigating a sex trafficking ring that comes to her attention when a frightened woman in a pickup truck leaves a note reading "HELP ME" outside Anna's Hell's Kitchen apartment on W. 43rd Street between Ninth and Tenth avenues. The truck is there to convey an antique desk Anna has sold to two Slavic looking men and their passenger -- a beautiful Eastern European women being taken to Little Odessa, Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Anna's upstairs neighbor Nettie Clouchet, a free-lance journalist and blogger, knows Ukrainian because of her ex-boyfriend, Eddie Pushkar, a Ukrainian-American cop.Anna has a NYPD cop boyfriend, too, Santos Reyes, who tries to dissuade her from playing detective, in vain, of course. Anna and Nettie pose as maids from a temp service to get inside a luxury Times Square apartment building that plays a big role in the sex-trafficking scheme.Another plot has Anna's visiting cousin from Cincinnati, Patti, prowling the streets of Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, the gentrifying area where Anna lives and works."City in Shadow" has plenty of action and character development, plus the bonus of the Manhattan Mystery architectural locale, this time inside Grand Central Terminal.

I love New York! I know that sounds like the oft-run ad from awhile ago, but I can't help it - it's the truth. And books that are set in and around that city naturally catch my attention. So it was with City in Shadow by Evan Marshall, a novel that is part of the Hidden Mysteries series. This is the first book that I've read by this author and I don't believe it's necessary to read the other books in the series first to be able to enjoy this one.The story begins with Anna Winthrop, a sanitation department worker, witnessing what she thinks may be a woman being held against her will. Anna follows the trail of this woman to a mysterious building on 42nd Street. Meanwhile, Anna's upstairs neighbour, Nettie, also sees the young woman and starts her own investigation. Both women encounter plenty of obstacles, sinister characters and danger in their quest to find out the truth. This novel had several elements to it that stood out. First, it was written a bit like a noir thriller/hard-boiled detective novel. That genre pairs well with the New York setting (as does the plot) but the book also had a cozy mystery feel to it. The characters' backgrounds were divulged, neighbours got to know neighbours (even if they were bad neighbours) and the way the characters zipped around the city and bumped into people just gave me a 'small town' sort of feeling. It was an interesting mix and I liked it.I found the writing somewhat choppy at times and it could've used a bit more editing. I didn't always need to know how beautiful or handsome someone was and I felt those descriptions were somewhat clichéd.Despite those flaws, I think this would be a great series for those who haven't read a mystery before. It would also be very appealing for young adults new to the genre. And of course anyone who loves books set in New York!

Recent Cincinnati high school graduate Patti Fairchild is coming to Manhattan to spend time with her older second cousin sanitation garage supervisor Anna Winthrop. Patti has not made any plans for her future so Anna is excited with her relative's visit. At the same time that Patti is due in town, Anna's edgy neighbor Nettie Clouchet, the "ghost blogger" is investigating Winthop for a section in her new book on local women of achievement. To make space for her cuz in her small apartment, Anna sells a desk to Ukrainian Grigori Sidorov. Inside Grigori's truck sits a pretty woman who drops a note onto the sidewalk while the desk is loaded. Anna picks up the message, which pleads: "help me". She gets her boyfriend, NYPD police officer Santos Reyes, who agrees the woman, may be in trouble and they should not ignore that possibility. Nervous Nettie can't either as a journalist. None of them nor Patti who wanders the avenues at night know yet that their separate inquiries involve trafficking as the Kirkmore Apartments is where Death Is Disposable. The fourth Hidden Manhattan mystery (see Dark Alley) is a gripping urban mystery in which the four "sleuths" learn where all avenues ends, but may be too late by the time they figure out the horror they investigate. Fast-paced, readers will want to journey the streets of Manhattan along side their tour guides as mean is too soft of a descriptor. This is all lights-on after reading thriller.Harriet Klausner

Excellent and informative but it would be helpful if the author would bring out a new edition based upon 2016 figures. (i) 2012 and 2013 figures, as used in the book, are so out of date in this rapidly changing world. (ii) It would also be good if he drew attention to the pressures which the large utility companies in the US are taking to slow down the installation of domestic systems which will result in the adoption of domestic solar energy when batteries are more efficient so as to cut out the utility distribution control and costs. (iii) include more information on all the realistic technologies for domestic energy storage.

PROS:1. I completely agree with almost everything. I'm particularly pleased to see Seba has not fallen for the hydrogen mirage. (If efficiency can be radically increased, someday I may be a fan of H2, but I'm not holding my breath.)2. Unlike some authors, he doesn't give a heavy barrage of cute storytelling about the personalities and history, except where it's really relevant.3. The book is obviously a polemic of sorts, but at least Seba doesn't go off on any diatribes about tangential political matters.CONS:1. The graphics are just abominable. Some of the most important figures are not even readable. Heck, such spectacular stuff should be in color.2. The copy editing is also awful. Misspellings, wrong word choices, often even entire missing words, or phrases that amount to gibberish. If the missing word is something like "billion," then it really matters!3. As others have said, yes, by now it's out of date. Then again, the way things are going, I suppose it was inevitable. (I assume there's a blog.)4. Just a suggestion, but something might also be added about what happens AFTER 2030. I could see PV being so cheap as to actually create problems, such as "satisficing" leading to stagnating progress in energy efficiency and other improvements. And with, say, a quadrilllion watts of cheap electrical capacity, what would we do with all that power? Capitalism being what it is, I'm sure there will be no problem coming up with uses. But with the clean energy transition accelerating faster than Ludicrous Mode in a Tesla, such thinking may be lagging behind developments.

This is the first book anybody concerned about climate change should read. It isn't ABOUT climate change at all, but it provides the first real reasons for optimism that we'll ditch fossil fuels for renewables in time to save civilization. And that fundamental economics, not political activism, will be the primary reason why.I've spent a good part of the last two months networking in the field of climate change among the concerned. It amazes me that it took that long for somebody to point me to this book.READ IT!

Watch his videos on youtube first and see if you want to read his book. in my opinion Seba has the clearest crystal ball on the coming revolution in energy and transportation. We're at the tipping point he advocates today and has the numbers to show how solar, batteries and the EV car follow Moore's law in a predictable way that will displace fossil fuels and internal combustion engines. He also sees how the entrenched industries will fight back. Must read.

Excellent, no nonsense, fact based analyses and trends in the energy sector brought to you by Tony Seba. The trend is clearly pointing to clean energy.Highly recommend it to anyone, in any field, interested in the future of energy and our planet. Helps you see clearly through the misinformation spread by special interests. This book is to Energy sector as the China Study was to nutrition. If you are an investor or a trader, this is your guide.

Nice reading, although repetitive a quite a bit. The entire book can be summarized as "wake up, conventional energy! It's time for solar and wind." All the scenarios are rather convincing but lack in details. The difficulties seem nothing in comparison to the grand scheme of solar, storage and electric autonomous cars. The figures are mostly readable and can be zoomed in contrast to the complaints by some reviewers. The numbers seem real and convincing. Overall a good read and may impact many people's decision on future investments.

Tony Seba did his homework. He makes many bold predictions but he backs them up with facts. This book is a GREAT GIFT for eco-concious friends and family. If you even occasionally think about energy and the environment…. buy this book.If you are an investor who wants to see the future…. buy this book.Science and sociology teachers: This book is not political. It is based on Seba's own insights and experience from his work in the Silicon Valley. This book is an easy read for students. Lots of good insight into how science drives society and vice-versa.

While certainly written as a polemic, Seba has the facts to back up his thesis here. Reading this work three years on from first publication is interesting as the author's predictions are proving to be conservative, with both the prices of batteries and solar cells falling quicker than he tipped. This is probably the most important book around at the moment, and should be required reading for policy makers everywhere.
