My girls (ages 3 and 6) have been in love with the new Sofia the First Series on Disney Junior since it came out. We were thrilled to see that they were starting to release some storybooks and we pre-ordered this book and several others (The Royal Slumber Party, Sofia Makes a Friend, Welcome to Royal Prep and The Perfect Tea Party) as soon as we could. They have all been big hits in our house."The Halloween Ball" is the first Halloween story from the Sofia the First series. It is about the King and Queen throwing a Halloween Ball for all of the royal children. The princes and princesses must create their own fancy costume for a costume contest. Sofia happily helps Amber with her peacock costume. She then makes her own fairy costume. When Amber sees Sofia's costume, she gets jealous and tries to make hers better, resulting in a big disaster. When Amber doesn't show up to the costume party, Sofia goes looking for her and ends up sharing her costume with Amber, making them twin sister fairies. There is a great happy ending with a nice message of sharing and helping others. The inside back cover of the book has a fitting "Princess Lesson" that states "A true princess shares what she has with others."Overall, this book has a great story with really nice artwork on high quality glossy paper. It has a nice happy ending and teaches a valuable lesson. It is a longer book that can develop into a more advanced reading book as your child's reading skills develop. It also comes with 25 shiny stickers of all the children in their costumes and other Halloween related decorations. The only negative about the book is that the front cover has a cutout showing one of the stickers and if you peel off that sticker, you have a big blank white space on the cover. That is a recent trend with some of these sticker books that I don't really like, but other than that, the book is great. As a parent, I appreciate how this book and TV Series has fun and positive storylines with great lessons for your children. This book makes a great addition to our storybook collection. Highly Recommended!

Our daughter is going to be Sofia for Halloween, so we surprised her with this book to go with her costume. She loves all things Sofia and this is no exception. It's a cute book and the stickers are a bonus!

I purchased this book for my 2 and 4 year old. They both enjoyed looking at the book and listening to the story. I wish it hadn't come with stickers though because my kids didn't treat the book very well once they realized their were stickers in it.

With Sophia I always know my grand daughter is going to learn a good lesson.And this book is no exception. Sophia shares with Amber who usually is the "Bad Guy" butSophia is always there for her teaching that forgiveness is the kindest way to be.

This is like the other Sofia books and shows - it seems to be of lower quality than the first princesses. It doesn't have the pop and the detail you expect. I can see my granddaughter trying to like it, but it's just sort of flat.

I wanted a more durable hardcover edition to read and to display on my bookshelf in my new house. The hardcover I bought from Total Books arrived in near-perfect condition, exactly as advertised, and looks gorgeous on the shelf.Why Robin Buss' translation for Penguin Classics? That's a reasonable question since Alexandre Dumas has been dead long enough for his works to enter the public domain. Several translations of his major novels are not only available in cheaper editions (such as Barnes & Noble Classics), but for free on Project Gutenberg.These are inferior and, in the case of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, censored translations. Most of them date back to the Victorian period, and render Dumas' evergreen French into English prose that feels old-fashioned and stilted today. Furthermore, because these are translations from the Victorian period, the translators filtered Dumas through their own moral sensibilities to give us Bowdlerized versions of a novel that ran on sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll a century before rock 'n roll was something you could do without a machine gun.Robin Buss' unabridged translation comes directly from the original French and renders Dumas into fresh, readable modern English. Material previously omitted by Victorian-era translators such as Franz' hashish-fueled sexual fantasies and the strongly implied lesbian relationship between Eugenie and Louise remain intact and uncensored. This is my favorite novel, a story not only of persecution and vengeance, but of man's relation to his God and how it drives, inspires and interferes with his judgements. Often adapted to film, nobody has captured the depth of Dumas' perceptions and understanding of people, largely because filmmakers focus on the excellently-told action rather the true essence of the story. This is one man's battle against himself, beautifully articulated egardless of which translation from French you choose to read. If you've not read Dumas before, be aware that he sets up his characters and circumstances, creating mysteries, then departs from his main story line to pursue secondary characters. All the threads pull together by the end of the story, but through at least a third of the book, Edmund Dantes is only peripherally present. Don't be discouraged - it's worth the wait, as the resolution is one of the most moving I've encountered in literature. A brilliant book by one of history's most original writers and creators of great heroes.

I love this book. It is a masterpiece of writing and I wanted a copy I could read any time I wanted. However, the Kindle edition has so many errors that it is unreadable. Every page has words running together, and it makes for a huge headache to get through even 2 pages. I couldn't read it due to these issues. I'm very glad I only spent $1.99 on it, but I wish I had spent nothing. A very poorly edited kindle edition.

The only other negative was the completely different societal norms that were in Parisian society in the 1840s compared today’s. However both of these ‘negatives’ can easily be put down to a piece of fiction that was contemporary when it was written but now can be seen as historical fiction with the passage to time.The Count of Monte Cristo needs to be read in all its unabridged glory to fully appreciate why it is a masterpiece and classic. Dumas’ literary tapestry is a delight to behold once finished with the last page and makes the reader think about when they’ll have time to reread it in the future.

Loigman tells a tale with intricate details of family life – how tense the world was during the time of war from different perspectives and a unique take of historical fiction at an armory where women were holding down the fort on the home front.Reading the Yiddish spoken by the parents, which is woven throughout the story and reminiscent of a generation gone by, brings a touch of nostalgia, particularly if you grew up with Jewish immigrant grandparents.THE WARTIME SISTERS is a story with characters who are real enough to tug at your heartstrings, that demonstrates what happens when trust is broken, the powerful destruction of secrets, and that finding strength from within is possible.

I loved this book. It really hit home for me with the setting being the Springfield Armory in Springfield MA, the town over from where I grew up and currently live. I loved the story of two sisters and theirs struggles with each other all throughout their lives. From their youth, there was always a rivalry between Ruth and Millie, Ruth being the brains and Millie being the beauty. Ruth blamed Millie for many failed relationships in her youth and brought this jealousy into their adulthood, she wanted nothing more that to leave Millie behind in Brooklyn. Their Mother's influence did not help matters. Once the parents are lost to them, the bonds of sisterhood are tested throughout the book. As an only child, it is fascinating to see how two siblings cut from the same cloth could be so different.I loved learning more about the Armory at wartime and what a powerful presence it had in Springfield. How important it was for women to step up and take these manufacturing jobs to support our soldiers on the front. The characters are developed wonderfully and the author switches back and forth between two time periods in Brooklyn and Springfield. Secrets are revealed and we are drawn in to see what will happen next to the two sisters. Additional characters, such as Arietta the singing cook at the Armory, also add so much to the story. As well as familiar places from my youth like Johnson's Bookstore, Steigers Tea Room and Mercolino's Bakery!The author's note at the end explains how much research she did and how true to life this book was at this time in our history, changing only a few timelines to keep her book flowing. I enjoyed every minute of it and learning more about the historic gem that is right in my own backyard.

Lynda Cohen Loigman's seamless writing style pulled me in on page one. Her careful descriptions, meticulous pacing, and driving plot, create an exquisitely crafted novel. The first half of the novel sets up the story through brilliant character development. From here, Loigman picks up the pace so that I found it hard to put the book down. The four main female characters weave their way throughout the book in short, crisp chapters. This is a story that pulls at the heart. It steps gently but with an outright awareness of what drives the human spirit to inflict pain but ultimately find compassion and forgiveness.

Millie and Ruth were very different growing up and didn't have the best relationship. As adults they are brought back together as a direct result of the war and their relationship is still tenuous when someone from their past returns and threatens everything. The Wartime Sisters is a refreshing take on WWII historical fiction. Based entirely in the US it gives a very different and lighter viewpoint than other novels of this genre. A combination of the incredibly well-researched history and Loigman's masterful descriptions made me feel like I was stepping back in time. I especially enjoyed how the different viewpoints allow the reader to see the same situation from multiple perspectives and highlighted how easy it is to misread the intentions of others.

I adored this story of two estranged sisters, Millie and Ruth who try to find their way back to each other while living and working at the Springfield Armory during WWII. The history was fascinating and the characters were complex and incredibly well-drawn - I cannot recommend it more!

Having read the Author’s first book, I looked forward to her second. I enjoy her writing and thought the story although not complicated showed a truism how sisters, friends and family disguise their feelings too often and for insecure reasons. Well told you will love the background where Ruth and Millie become true sisters of the heart

This was such a great book! I loved the first one by this author so I was excited to read this one! She did not disappoint! I also enjoyed reading the author's notes at the end explaining how she came to write the story! I highly recommend this beautiful novel to everyone!

I loved everything about this book. I found the setting and historical element fascinating -learning about the Springfield Armory. The writing and structure were masterful. Great second novel by Loigman. Can't wait for the third!
