Atkins' Nutritional's Colette Heimowitz has updated their diet regime to put more of an emphasis on hidden sugar avoidance to combine with the 'low card' regime that made Dr. Atkins famous. The book is beautifully laid out - from full color photographs to a very professional presentation of the discussions and recipes. To modernize the program, readers are presented with three plans: Atkins 20, Atkins 40, and Atkins 100 (referring to the amount of carbs in the day). The book breaks down into two parts - Eat Right, Not Less and Let's Get Cooking. The first part's chapters include: The hidden sugar effect, How Atkins works, Let's get started, Atkins your way (20, 40, 100), Living a low-Ccarb and low-sugar Lifestyle (small changes equal big results). The second part of the recipes breaks down as follows: Breakfast, Snacks and sides, Soups and stews, Salads, Appetizers, 15-minute meals, One-pot meals, Just desserts. There are several nicely laid out appendices at the end: Atkins 20, Level 1 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 20, Level 2 acceptable foods, Atkins 40, acceptable foods, Products for your low-carb lifestyle, and Scientific studies supporting Atkins 20, 40, and 100.The discussions are what you will find in most diet/nutrition books: watching out/removing hidden and non-hidden sugar foods. Avoiding processed foods. The nutritional, health, attitude benefits of eating better. How to read nutritional labels, dispelling myths of fat, and the importance of vegetables in every meal are covered. Better family eating and tips for eating out.The plans themselves are broken down by how strict a regimen you want or need to create your new lifestyle. The Atkins 20 has the most constraints because you are sticking to only 20 grams of carbs but it will also produce the greatest results. But others may wish to start a less restrictive diet and ease into or out of the other plans. The author recommends that those with over 40 pounds to lose, start with the Atkins 20. Those with less than 40 pounds start with Atkins 40. And for those who want to make smaller changes and start slower, there is Atkins 100.There are suggested plans for eating for the day and then the rest of the book includes the recipes. Each recipes is three color and with numbered small steps. They include net carbs amount, serving size, time (active and total), and calories. A small pull out also lists fiber, protein, fat. A short introduction to each recipe item is included and why that recipe is useful/tasty/its history is discussed. Many recipes have a full page photograph of the final result. The type is huge, each recipe full page and very easy to follow. The ingredients list is in italic and bold font and clearly separated to make them easy to read. In all, the large format of the recipes, large font, clean layout with plenty of white space, use of different colors and italics, make following and creating menu items easy. The author's tone is very no-nonsense and up front. It is written by a clinician who has spent her career working directly with people and their nutritional issues. One important deviation from most modern nutritional programs is that this plan doesn't discourage the use of artificial sweeteners or eating sweet items (many authors today feel that artificial sweeteners, even Stevia, create problematic cravings and prevent people from lowering sweetness values to where they don't need to sweeten everything any more). There is also no discussion of fitness or exercise. The recipes are what you would expect - everything from cinnamon waffles to an apple crumble dessert that doesn't have apples in it. Along with the recipes are guidelines for eating out and how to make the best of various ethnic dinners such as Japanese, Mexican, and Italian. In all, a beautifully presented nutrition book that is easy to follow. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

It’s a lifestyle not a diet. Once you realize that you can loose all the weight you need to and keep it off. Take it from me. I lost 125 lbs and then went right back to old habits... hey, the diet is over. Gained 75 lbs back. 16 months ago I decided that “diets don’t work”! Now I live a low carb lifestyle and have lost 100 lbs. I am happier, look good and feel great! Again... it’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle, and that means for LIFE.

There are so many low carb diets these days, with new ones popping up all the time. After recently looking at a book about the ketogenic diet, I wanted to compare it to Atkins. Because I got to wondering, aren’t all the latest diets like Atkins?I liked how the book started out talking about the sugar in our diet, and even included a list of the sneaky names for sugar that may slip by us because we don’t always know which ones are basically, well, sugar. I was also impressed that Atkins isn’t NO carbs—I saw some foods like whole grain bread and rice mentioned. (Yay!) The book moves on to food labels, grocery shopping and exercise. This is a very complete book. I’ve looked over a lot of diet and nutrition books recently in a personal quest to lose a bit of weight and pick up some healthier eating habits. Most of those books are very repetitive: it takes forever to get past all the stories and paragraphs that basically say the same thing with different words. What I really like about this book is that it is filled with useful information. By page 49 there is already a plan!!!!!Eating out, eating in, packing a lunch—there’s a wealth of information here! And by page 116 we are ready for the recipes. Instead of a book filled with too many words, there are charts and pictures. So I’m thinking, pass up all those low carb books and start with this one.

I've been looking for a decent diet program. I was going to try Keto but read somewhere that Keto was basically just the first stage of Atkins so I thought I would look into it and lo and behold they were releasing a new book. Arrived yesterday and so far it's really good. While I already knew some of the science behind it, it does a really good job of explaining the program for new people and the recipes look good although I do wish they had pictures for every recipe. While an Atkins veteran might not find this worth buying, anyone looking to start their weight loss journey should start here.

Just made the Chicken and dumplings! That bowl was full of comfort food and I gobbled it up! Entire price of book was instantly worth every penny!

Half of the book is about the Akin’s program and the other half is all recipes. I was very please with the recipe section as they are much more user-friendly than any I’ve seen in their books before. I bought it for the recipes.

The recipes are great...I have been a long time Atkins follower and the new program makes it so much easier than ever before.

Positives: The graphics and page layouts are nice.Cons: The first 100 pages are all rehash of the Atkins program. Good info, but not what I was looking for. This is just old info that is being re-wrapped in a pretty bow for those who don't know anything about the Atkins program. The recipes are nothing new as well. Some are so simple they shouldn't require a full-page recipe, but perhaps a page of "what you can do with an egg," for example. Many of the recipes do not have pictures. I am a visual person and like to see what I am cooking should look like.Overall: It is a good sized book, sturdy cover, nice pictures, the print is appealing..............but if you have been working the Atkins plan for a while, you will be disappointed. If you are a newbie, looking for who Dr. Atkins was, the history of the plan and very basic information, then this is the book for you.I am returning mine.

I started to listen to this on audio book, and inadvertently started with the last disc first. I had expected that Bill was going to be using his great sense of humor, but this was just a dry book with scientific stuff, which I could look up on the internet if I really wanted. I was very disappointed that in his research about DNA that he failed to mention that the woman who took the crystalograpy x-rays literally gave up her life because she got cancer and died from taking all those xraya and it was proven that SHE really discovered DNA, not the arrogant Crick and Watson, who treated her very badly. So, Bill, you missed the mark on that one.So then I put disc one in and he started talking about the big bang theory, which he obviously believes. I just couldn't listen to any more of this. It was like being in high school again and having scientific facts crammed down our throats. Sorry, Bill, you missed the mark on this book.

A friend of mine recommended this book knowing that I like science. I'm used to reading about the sciences in single topics. This book surprised me in the amount of effort the author took to go through book after book of different sciences, both old and new, and proceeded to connect the dots into several cohesive stories about our home, planet Earth, and its residents. The biggest surprise is how little we truly know about both and just how much luck was involved that both exist in their present form. This book is an easy read and should be understandable to anyone who has a basic interest in science.Be prepared though to being overwhelmed because there is a lot of information in this book, with references to other works. This book is best read in sections allowing yourself some time to think about what you have learned; and I'm sure you are going to learn at least a few things.I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to understand what an amazing place our planet is and life that exists on it.

I have just completed Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything” for the second time. I am quite certain it will not be my last reading. I cannot think of any other single-volume book I have ever read that was as informative, entertaining, and broad in scope as this classic. Not having excelled in science, nor been much interested in it when I was younger, this gem is a massive refresher course on everything I ever learned about science, and then some.Bryson moves seamlessly from one sweeping topic to the next with great ease. Whether he is expounding upon thermodynamics, paleontology or cosmology, he helps us to grasp, to the extent that seems possible, the interrelatedness of all physical phenomona. He is particularly skillful at putting into perspective concepts of size and dimension within the universe, whether mind-bogglingly vast expanses or minuscule marvels of life’s building blocks. He not only teaches us what is known, but humbles us by emphasizing how much we do not know.Bryson also brings us biographical sketches of the greatest names in science as only an enormously talented humorist could do. Intellectual giants like Newton, Einstein, and many others, are brought to us with all their eccentricities. So many brilliant individuals were quite odd, which makes them much more human and accessible to the Bryson’s reader. There is also a moral underpinning to Bryson’s book which becomes most evident in the final chapter. Our species has, in essence, become the extinction event for so many others with which we have shared the planet. Beginning with the unsuspecting and gentle dodo bird, Bryson outlines how we have systematically brought about the termination of thousands of creatures, intentionally or through ignorance. This sobering reality makes one a bit more respectful of current efforts to save endangered species. No species, and indeed no human being, is anything other than a miracle of chance, a reality in which Bryson rejoices from his opening chapter. He congratulates each of us for surviving the cut and coming into existence against all odds. His book is humbling and thought-provoking, leaving one with a sense of awe at the grandeur of, well, nearly everything.

I read the hardcover version first, all the while wishing there were pictures, diagrams, maps, etc. I then heard of this illustrated version and ordered it right away. This adds so much to the text. Written in Bryson's easy, slightly ironic style, this book tackles subjects that are often difficult to fully grasp. Great fun and much improved with pictures!

Well written and entertaining this is not a textbook, rather Bryson attempts to create a story. The story of Earth and the people who made the critical advancements. The story of Marie Curie, Einstein, Darwin. This is a book that would make Carl Sagan proud. The book is organized into 6 parts: Lost in the Cosmos; the Size of the Earth; A New Age Dawns; Dangerous Planet; Life Itself; and The Road to Us.The first part: Lost in the Cosmos is about the big bang and the elemental beginnings of the Universe. Part 2 The size of the Earth discusses the early attempts to determine the size of the Earth in the 17th century. Part 3 A New Age Dawns is about is about Einstein’s universe and the atom and plate tectonics. Part 4 Dangerous Planet is about the interior of the planet and what lies below the surface. Chapter 5 Life Itself is the largest section comprising 161 pages. It covers the rise of life beginning after the formation of the Earth up through the Cambrian explosion. The chapter also discusses Darwin’s work on Evolution. The final chapter The Road to Us is about the rise of humans. My only issue with the book is that is a bit dated. The history sections are great, but the discussion on current events and science are out of date. This book needs an update.
