OK. I am significantly overweight. I read this book and it makes so much sense! For years our society has been telling us LOW or NO Fat is the key!! HIgh carbs, get rid of the fats. Over the years I would yo-yo, losing weight and gaining weight again. When foods take out the fat then they take out the flavors! To account for this lack of taste then the manufacturers add back in loads of sugar. This book teaches you how to change your body from a sugar-burner to a fat burner, which is what you are when you are in ketosis. Ketosis is when your body no longer is using carbs as its fuel source but fat. Years ago I tried the Atkin's diet. It did work but I was focusing more on protein and less carbs but I did not get the importance of fat. This book showed me that fat is integral for your success of achieving ketosis and proper fat-burning. The diet wants you to implement 60-80% FAT!! 20-35% Protein and 0-5% Carbs. I learned from this book that if you have more protein than fat then your body will then begin turning the excess protein into glucose will be similar to sugar-burning. So fat is key!Guess what? I have been doing this plan and I am actually eating less!! Fat has more flavor and more calories. I no longer have jitters from high-carb intake that was resulting in crashes. My energy is up and I am excited because I don't feel like I am deprived! Once in a while I will get hungry and want to turn to a quick carb anything but have learned to have nuts, cheese, etc. ready at hand. I eat plenty of vegetables because there are plenty that have a low-glycemic index.I have lost weight easily and without any hunger. I do not crave sugar that much anymore and if I do I have learned incredible replacement recipes that take care of it. My sister has diabetes and high blood pressure. She has been doing this similar plan and has improved all of her blood levels. She was so excited! The foods are amazingly yummy. They have breakfast, lunch, desserts, smoothies, and sauces. I can go out to a restaurant and actually eat!!! I can order chicken or steak with cream sauces and butter. Most of the recipes are quick and easy and because they have FAT they are delicious! There are so many recipes where you use Almond Flour and Coconut flour that you can eat things like sausage gravy and biscuits, pancakes, muffins, etc. I don't feel like I am missing anything with these options! Here are some interesting things I have eaten and even adapted "my own" versions from:Buttered Coffee!! I will put coconut oil, almond milk or coconut milk, and some xylitol or Swerve sweetener---When I have this I feel such a burst of energy!!Peanut butter shake, chocolate covered nuts,my adaptation of one recipe is lemon coconut chocolate cheesecake....this is so good and it does not taste "diet" at all!!cinnamon muffins with cream cheese frostingEggs, cheese, bacon.....recipes with chicken, beef, fish, shrimp........it has it all! This book's information has been a blessing to me. Its easy recipes have allowed me to immediately start this way of eating unlike some other books where you have to build up a huge food list before you can really begin.I bought some ketosis testing strips here on Amazon which helps me track my ketosis. They show you when you are in ketosis and not and also show if you are in light ketosis or high ketosis because they have color variations. This helps me keep track.

Why 2 STARS?Cause hate is a strong feeling for this book, I merely don't like it and I'll tell you why.I bought this because of it's price and seemingly great reviews. After purchasing this book and attempting 10 different recipes, I realized that most of the people who gave this book great reviews got it at either a discount price or free!?It has A LOT of typographical errors, nearly NO pictures and whoever wrote this just didn't understand the concept of measurements and the way ingredients work.I've been on the KETO diet for 3 months and while I LOVE the diet, In an attempt to find more ways to cook different meals, I set out to purchase cook books to assist my journey. Being on the keto diet is expensive for me cause I am buying better quality ingredients however, I've wasted a lot of them on this book.I made the beef stroganoff (gross, watery mess and the cream cheese didn't even melt and blend very well into the sauce), lemon cheesecake (aka rubber cement! The recipe called for 1/3 cup of lemon JELLO! Not 1/3 of a box or 1/3 or Tablespoon - 1/3 CUP! Add that to 1 CUP of boiling water and yes, in a few hours, you've got the perfect recipe for cement. Should've used common sense!) Recipe after recipe let me down and wasted precious meat & ingredients! I've made a few of the fat bomb recipes successfully but they're not anything fancy that you can't find on say, pinterest.DO not waste your time on this book that was clearly not thoroughly combed through by an editor or even spell check. If you're thinking about doing KETO - DO IT! Just don't plan on this book assisting you on your journey. Cooking well takes skill, I know, but cooking keto friendly dishes takes some extra finesse and this book will only let you down cause clearly no one thought to MAKE the food they published!

Not a huge fan. We used this in the beginning of our journey into Keto and some recipes were helpful, however I am not a fan of this book at all. She is inconsistent with her units of measure (oz, Cups, etc- all over the place. Cream cheese for example, when bought in tub-form vs stick form, recipe calls for oz, so there is a lot of googling going on!) I am also not a fan, at all, of the authors “voice.” Some recipes areOkay, but we mostly cross referenced with similar recipes on the internet. No photos of prepared meals soyou know what the hell you’re making! For background, I not only have a love for cooking, but I’m good at it too! I really wanted this to work, and it was truly disappointing. We tried at least 30 recipes- worst, by far, were the “scones!” The printed recipe called for 1/3 cup “Splenda, stevia, or other sugar substitute.” 1 CUP of sugar is equal to, like, 1 tsp of stevia! Huh?!

This publisher reprinted the soft cover of this book and used the correct cover but the content of the book is from another Rockridge title called "clean eating". These are NOT ketogenic recipes. Even the ISBN number is wrong. What a huge mistake.

I've been eating a ketogenic diet for 3 years and have lost 55 pounds. I had my annual physical this week and just got my cholesterol results total 185, Trig 40, HDL 61, LDL 115. Not bad for eating bacon, eggs, and heavy cream every day. I truly believe this is the way everyone should eat. I'm a nurse practitioner and recommend this diet to all my patients except maybe type 1 diabetics.

Lots of great recipes in here, but how has no one noticed that the nutritional information is wrong on SO many recipes? Take the blueberry avocado smoothie for example. 1/2c blueberries, whole avocado, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk--makes 2 servings. Book lists this as 0.9 carbs, 0 fiber, so 0.9 net carbs. HUH? A 1/4c of blueberries has 3 net carbs, 1/2 avocado has a couple... This recipe has at least 4. When you're sticking to 20 a day, that kind of error matters. And there are a lot of mistakes like this.

Pop Goes the Weasel (Alex Cross), by James Patterson

Amazon.com Review

Likened to a "young Muhammad Ali," Alex Cross, the Porsche-driving profiler, doctor, detective, and father of two has seen his fair share of vicious killers. From a bloodthirsty butcher who came after his family (Cat and Mouse) to a devilish duo working cross-country (Kiss the Girls), Cross has managed to outmaneuver all of his enemies. Until he meets the Weasel. A series of killings in the forgotten, crime-infested ghettos of southeast D.C. has sent Cross and his 6'9" 250-pound partner, John Sampson, in search of the "Jane Doe" killer. However, their racist, tyrannical boss George Pitman orders them to stay out of the southeast and investigate the high-profile murder of a wealthy white man. Cross already has suspicions that the murders are linked, but when Sampson's ex turns up in an abandoned southeast warehouse kicked to death, the two detectives carry on with their original investigation. Meanwhile, Cross's longtime love, Christine (Cat and Mouse), has taken prominence in his life, and it looks as if the two will finally get hitched--with one glitch: Cross puts everything he loves in jeopardy as he obsessively goes after the Weasel. Akin to a slick Hollywood action flick, Pop Goes the Weasel doesn't have time for meaningful character development or thoughtful moral analysis. And it doesn't need to. Its winning formula is based on short scenes (chapters average about 3 pages), addictive plot progression, and mean dialogue: "Sampson sighed and said, 'I think her tongue is stapled inside the other girl. I'm pretty sure that's it, Alex. The Weasel stapled them together.' I looked at the two girls and shook my head. 'I don't think so. A staple, even a surgical one, would come apart on the tongue's surface.... Crazy glue would work." --Rebekah Warren

From Publishers Weekly

Patterson dedicates his latest (after 1998's When the Wind Blows) to "the millions of Alex Cross readers who so frequently ask 'Can't you write faster?'" Those readers won't be disappointed: the successful formula is in high gear, with the Washington, D.C., psychologist/homicide detective up to his ears in unsolved murders. This tale features a duplicitous villain, a glut of dirty office politics and the inevitable threat to someone Cross just can't live without. A highly moral character, Cross is now firmly rooted in many imaginations as Morgan Freeman, who played him in the film version of Kiss the Girls. When he's not caring for Damon and Jannie, his two young children, Cross takes boys to visit their fathers in prison and works in a soup kitchen. After his boss, Chief Pittman, refuses to believe that a serial killer is striking in the neglected Southeast section, Cross and four other officers work extra hours on their own, the only ones who really care. Readers learn early on that the killer is a British diplomat, Geoffrey Shafer, a chilling madman ostensibly holding his sanity together with drugs. Shafer is obsessed with a real-life version of a computer game called the Four Horsemen, during which he masquerades as a taxi driver who kills his unsuspecting passengers. If Shafer is almost too good to be trueAanother fictional psychopath with infinite resourcesAPatterson is shrewd enough to show him making mistakes (like forgetting to wash) as he comes apart at the seams. The killer is caught in the middle of the narrative, setting the scene for a bold courtroom drama. Even the disappearance of Cross's new lady love (his wife was killed in a previous book) is less of a clich?d device than a ritual sacrifice as Patterson's well-oiled suspense machine grinds away with solid precision. 1 million first printing; $1 million ad/promo; 14-city author tour; Time Warner audio. I do have to say I enjoyed Pop Goes the Weasel more than the other four Alex Cross books. I also know it’s not the best in the series though, if that makes sense to you. Why don’t you see what I thought? The Ugly: A major murder investigation and the lead detective decides to go on a vacation with his girlfriend, kids, and mother? No cop in the world would ever do such a thing. It doesn’t matter how much the cop hates his boss or not, there are always ways around someone like that. So, the real problem here is Cross’ boss. Either quite or request a transfer if the work environment is hostile. The Bad: Now, speaking of the vacation. One of the major plot points in this book is the disappearance of Christine. But it just seemed to be glossed over. I don’t understand it, but I can accept it because…The Good: The best part about this book, and the reason I like it the most, is that it’s not all about murders. Cross is investigating one killer here. It’s not a complicated story with multiple murders. Then the trial started and things picked up. It was more of a political and court room thriller than a murder thriller. It was a nice change of pace.Final Thoughts: Seeing as how the problems with his boss has been going on for five books now, I can look pass that. I’m sure you can too. Like I said, so far this is my personnel favorite, but not the best.

Bodies being dumped in the Southeast neighborhood of Washington DC by a crazed killer that is a master at disguising himself brings Dr. Cross into a suspenseful and intriguing investigation. No matter what he does the killer remains ahead of him.Dr. Cross, his finance, and family go on a vacation where she is kidnapped. Dr. Cross returns to Washington DC where he apprehends the killer and goes through the trial of the century, and the suspect found not guilty. The suspect has a twist in his identity.Dr. Cross is able to track the suspect to a tropical island where a batle in the water occurs with another twist.Excellent in depth writing and invistigating by this author again

Pop Goes The Weasel, by James Patterson is a fast moving gut wrenching story. Cross and Sampson, his partner at Washington D.C. PD, are trying to solve a run of homicides of young women, mostly prostitutes. Whomever is doing these killings is an expert at the job. He leave no clues. How are these two men going to solve these murders? Cross is under pressure from the Chief of Detectives not to bother with the South End murders. After all, they are black and whores so who cares? Get on with solving who murdered a British citizen who just got off a plane from England. Cross, Sampson and three other detective are working to solve these murders on their own time. The chief learns of this and places all, but Cross, on suspension. Cross is under such pressure, that he takes his family and Christine on a vacation when Christine disappears. What has happened to her? Has the "Weasel" taken her and killed her? To find the answers, read this excellent book. You will not be sorry. Rated PG. Sexual content and very descriptive homicide scenes! DP, Castro Valley, CA.

Not as good as "Along Came A Spider" or "Kiss the Girls", but it's a lot better than "Cat & Mouse". Patterson does manage to redeem himself and the Alex Cross series in this next installment, "Pop Goes The Weasel".The new killer, Geoffrey Shafer, is indeed one of the most terrifying villains since Casanova and Soneji. He takes scariness to a whole new level and really gives Alex a hard time. The romance between Alex and Christine is just beautiful in this novel. I love how they care for each other and love each other. I'm glad that they are getting married. And I know I said this before, but I freaking love Alex's kids in this series. So adorable and cute. And you got to love Nana Mama (the only person who can get away with arguing with Alex and making him angry). For once (even if it is for only the beginning and middle of the story), I'm happy that things are settling down. But then there are the problems that I have with this story. There are too many sub-plots going on. I mean, the new character, Patsy Hampton, she doesn't fit into this story at all. Even as I character I don't care for her, because I'm still trying to figure out why she is even in this story. There is also a story-plot that involves Geoffrey being involved with three other killers, who call themselves the "Four Horsemen" (which he is one of them). I felt like Patterson could have done more with all four of these killers instead of just mentioning them throughout the story and only having them appear together once, which is the ending. Also, Christine's kidnapping went on for "way" to long in this story and it also feels like a cliché. And while I do kinda like the ending, I felt like Patterson could have done so much better."Pop Goes The Weasel" is an okay novel and it does redeem Patterson for his work on "Cat & Mouse", but it doesn't hold up for what made "Along Came A Spider", "Kiss the Girls", and "Jack & Jill" so good. The beginning and most of the middle really had me going, but it is the final part of the story that didn't sit well with me. If you are a fan of the Alex Cross series, then maybe you might like this one.

This story hits Alex Cross, both intimately and personally. With the Weasel on the prowl, it's not just another serial murder, it's a game, a game The Weasel is winning. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat, turning page after page, even when the eyes grow tired. My heart was with Cross, and his family, even at the verge of them giving up. I was totally surprised by the ending, and look forward to more of Cross. Cross is dynamic, and the one detective you want on your side.

With over three hundred million books sold there is a good reason why James Patterson's books are so popular. He grabs you in the first few pages. In "Pop Goes the Weasel" Detective Alex Cross suspects a British diplomat of a number of vicious killings. This case will draw into harms way Alex's family and his girlfriend.

Although the book initiates in a dry read it progresses to shed this posture and becomes a very interesting reservoir of information on defensive and offensive cyber capabilities of the USA agencies in the first part of the 21st century by the former director of National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This extensive memoir provides the reader with what took place in NSA and CIA after 9/11, by the 2004 Intelligence Reform Act (IRA), in these agencies and how they protected the country defensively and then offensively. Additionally, on page 166 the reader is provided with the new American intelligence community created by IRA with the newly created Director of National Intelligence (DNI) at the top of the heap. After being trained by NSA and being in this environment interacting with NSA products during this period many questions I personally had are answered by this account. From this text it is apparent so many people lacked a basis understanding of what NSA's function was and is today. As a retired USAF officer I very much appreciate General Hayden's references and analogies to air force nomenclature and models relating to “Spy Stuff.” This combined with lessons in war college twenty years ago clear the fog of “what are we learning this stuff for?”I agree with the author the public needs a deeper understanding of what American Intelligence is and does and he lays this out quite well. The reader needs to comprehend and fully understand at least minimally the topics addressed in this book to appreciate this ongoing endeavor. Others will have much difficulty for it is not a primer on electronic spying. Hayden, although a fighter pilot by training, clearly explains how disruptive the digital age was for American Intelligence. However, this book needs a glossary to assist the novice with the plethora of acronyms which took me several years to adopt.Prior to reading this book I would highly recommend David Kahn's “The Code Breakers” as a primer to this arena and then Michael Smith's “The Secrets of Station X” which will place you in the frame of mind to begin to understand where General Hayden begins his memoir. I agree this is a MUST READ for anyone who desires to understand the value of signal and human intelligence and the very complex and difficult decisions involved for how far our government should go to protect our Country!

This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in how we conduct foreign policy. It provides insights into how we know and understand what is happening in the world around us and how we respond to actions that we deem to be a threat to our national interest.I loved this book. I give it five stars because Mr. Hayden gave me what I was seeking. I did not expect him to disclose secrets. I did not expect him to provide a true version of a spy novel. I was not looking for a book to read at the beach or on a long flight. I did not mind taking the time to check an acronym to see which agency it represented. This book is not a political treatise. Mr. Hayden does not hide his political views but he was a public servant, a man doing a job in an agency that is supposed to be apolitical. If you are looking for a book that will provide you with political arguments then I think you will be disappointed.A major purpose of a book of this type is to allow the author a chance to provide his perspective on his place in history. In this case, the book serves as a defense against the many attacks that have been leveled against him because of his position in an administration beset by scandals such as the use of rendition and torture. It would be worth your time to, at least, skim James Risen’s book, STATE OF WAR: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration. PLAYING TO THE EDGE was in many ways written as a rebuttal.

I am a committed Democrat but a security freak with 38 years service in military intelligence. GEN Hayden has done a great job of portraying the conundrum of security vs liberty and of the lack of will of the politicians, Democrat and Republican, to speak to the American public and help decide the correct balance. Indeed, he even enlightened how the politicians whipsaw back and forth on security to please their "perceived" public opinion. And by airing a more through recap of the Agencies the last few decades, he also enlightened me on many of the nuances of why the decisions went the way they did and made me even prouder of our services! God please separate the DNI from the under the table political appointment process!

"A moving coming-of-age memoir." ―School Library Journal, starred review"Eminently accessible . . . . This is a timely reminder that none of us lives in a vacuum and that deportation affects more than just the deportee." ―Kirkus Reviews"Truly a book of our generation." ―BooklistIn the Country We Love:One of Chicago Public Library and BookRiot's Best Books of 2016"Guerrero transforms a truly terrible situation into something meaningful, using her story and her role as an Ambassador for Citizenship and Naturalization by the White House to try to help other immigrant families left in this terrible position." ―Publishers Weekly“Lovingly detailed in colloquial and well-paced prose . . . The author's candor in chronicling the lowest moments of her life reads like an urgent confessional. . . The author's greatest strength lies in her ability to advocate for undocumented immigrants and others affected by immigration status." ―Kirkus Reviews "Offering readers the story she needed to hear as a child, Guerrero shines a light on this country's flawed immigration system, eloquently calling for reform without diminishing her appreciation for the opportunities US citizenship has afforded her. PROS: The necessity of this book. For those living with the constant fear of losing their parents to deportation, it's evidence that they do not walk this path alone. If you are not facing deportation, you should probably also read it. You never know as much as you think you do.It's easy to trot out popular slogans when the consequences do not seem to affect you directly; don't be one of those people who are unable or worse, unwilling, to recognise the humanity of others. There but for the grace of God go I. And (possibly) you. There is also a resource section in the back for kids who fear the deportation of parents and for parents facing deportation.WARNINGS: I'm sure that there are many triggers to the very tweens and teens this book is aimed at, and while it would offer them a lot, they should probably have a lot of support while reading this. Also, while the author has done an incredible job of getting herself to where she is, she went through a really rough patch of depression and cutting (self-harm) and thoughts of suicide which should not be negated. It's not a big part of the book, but parents and carers should know that it is there and that this is something that should be talked about.Personally, I thought the author did an incredible job with the cards dealt to her and was very honest and sensitive about that part of her life. But it's in there and should be acknowledged. This was a fast read, but one that showed, so clearly, the resilience of the human spirit, the industriousness of those at the bottom of the ladder and the invisible misery that the rest of society happily keeps invisible. What if this was your family? Your child?Because reading helps us all to become better humans, and this in one of those stories that gives us a path to take to get there.

I know this actress from Orange is the New Black. Then when I started following her on Instagram I noticed she was such an amazing young woman. When the book was release last week I pre-ordered it and begun reading as soon as it arrived. The book is a great read in understanding a child’s perspective in deportation. The full understanding of the emotion that can overtake individuals. Take out the politics of whether undocumented individuals should be here or not. That’s opinions. No one looks into what that means to the person. The feelings that occur. And this is brilliantly written to where you, the reader can understand that. Whether your Democrat, republic, or simply don’t care. Read this. I think it’s great. And I think she did absolutely amazing in her life so far. I hope she writes more.

An easy accessible read for middle grade and high school kids. This book details Diane Guerrero’s parents’ immigration story and the effect immigration opportunities and policies had on her personally and her extended family. An important story for kids to know.

Read a review of this book in the Washington Post and ordered it for my "Tweenie" niece to read when she visited us this summer. She came with her own reading material, so I read it myself and sent it home with her. Hope it makes her apricate just how blessed she is to have been born here and not be in danger of coming home to find out her parents have been shipped out. It did me.

My daughter is 13 and latina. She read this book in a day and a half. She loved it.

Timely story about true life experiences of immigrant family. Written for older elementary or middle school age students

She portraits her personality and I think she meant to do that. Want it to keep it real. It’s nice to have representation and for her to speak up!

Read the book in one sitting. Can’t wait to add this to my classroom library, sadly many of my students may connect.
