Impossible Owls: Essays, by Brian Phillips

Review

"An absolute blast . . . [Phillips] is able to navigate extraordinary circumstances with curiosity, playfulness, and humility, and his enthusiasm is best seen in his extensive research within these communities and their histories. And this is why I couldn't get enough of this book: Phillips is the perfect adventure guide ― down for anything, talented enough to translate the experience." --Arianna Rebolini, Buzzfeed (Best Books of Fall 2018)"Brian Phillips has a wonderful way of taking readers to entirely unfamiliar places in nature (the Yukon) and in culture (sumo wrestling), and translating those experiences into something that feels visceral, even for people who are stuck at their computers all day. Believe the John Jeremiah Sullivan comparisons and get lost in this captivating essay collection, which brings to life both the extraordinary and the mundane." --Maris Kreizman, Vulture"As a journalist, Brian Phillips is willing to fall down a rabbit hole to uncover a mosaic of detail within a particular subject. This collection of essays presents some of his greatest examinations into the odd and intriguing . . . Philips takes readers down unexpected paths that are as world-expanding as they are entertaining." --Wilder Davies, TIME"Brian Phillips has a way of making you care about the things he cares about in the way he cares about them, which is passionately, almost obsessively . . . The essays are invigorating and muscular; the perspective is enthusiastic and vital; the book is a must-get." --R. Eric Thomas, Elle (Best Books of 2018)"Phillips is a long-form journalist of the old school, a deep research artist, and a killer stylist. His digressive and frequently hilarious explorations . . . ecall the work of John Jeremiah Sullivan and the late David Foster Wallace, with a dash of Janet Malcolm. Impossible Owls is an absorbing and totally distinctive exploration of wildly disparate corners of our world." --Taylor Antrim, Vogue "[Brian Phillips's] keen eye is absolutely integral to his work, as is his presence in each piece. But he remains the narrator, the observer, he turns his investigations outward rather than inward; he never becomes the subject. Instead, he leads us into the hearts and minds of others, and in doing so, opens portals to times, places and lives outside both our and his first-hand experiences . . . One of the delights of this collection is Phillips’s ability to make the unknown familiar and the unfamiliar known . . . Impossible Owls is layered, narratively organised and analytical on a diverse, often unexpected range of subjects." --Lucy Scholes, The National"Brian Phillips’s essays are out of this world: big-hearted, exhaustive, unrelentingly curious, and goddamned fun. It’s about time he graced us with this collection." --Nick Moran, The Millions"[Phillips] has now established himself as a master of long form reporting that is indistinguishable from the literary essay, through which he bares witness to our contemporary moment." --Los Angeles Review of Books"Eclectic and witty." --Pop Sugar"[Phillips's] stories feel boyish in the best sense: fresh-faced and adventuresome, casually funny or lyrical as the moment demands." --Harvard Magazine"Enthralling nonfiction . . . What holds these styles together is Phillips's smart, readable prose as well his obsession with all things alien―the foreign, the puzzling, and the paranormal." --Max McKenna, PopMatters“Again and again, Impossible Owls proves that Brian Phillips is a cultural codebreaker of the highest order, unlocking the hidden systems of our mad world. Hilarious, nimble, and thoroughly illuminating.” ―Colson Whitehead, author of The Underground Railroad "Long-form narratives both diverting and engaging . . . [Phillips's] keen sensitivities color each scene, and he rarely hides his feelings about the figures he meets. Phillips has fashioned a calling for himself as an American flâneur, casting out into post-colonial frontiers and marveling at the oddities he encounters from the comfortable distance of unsupervised creative prose . . . [Full of] genuine insight the author dredges up from his experiences as well as the sense of a full human mind at large in the world that so many of his recollections approximate." ―Kirkus (starred review)"When Phillips, a jazzy John McPhee, ventures out into the world in pursuit of understanding of a place, mystery, vocation, or obsession, he is attention incarnate. The resulting prismatic descriptions power his vibrant, multidimensional essays, which are built on rich veins of research and further enlivened with crisply recounted conversations and convivially self-deprecating glimpses into his state of mind." ―Booklist“There is a section in Impossible Owls where Brian Phillips writes about tigers, and he notes that what's most astonishing about the animal is not its size or power or beauty, but its capacity to disappear. This is an excellent description of a tiger, but also an excellent description of how Phillips writes. These are big, powerful, beautiful essays―but no matter how personal the content, he just seems to disappear into the paragraphs.” ―Chuck Klosterman, author of But What if We’re Wrong? and Eating the Dinosaur“I most love Impossible Owls for how it sends me returning to the central question that I enjoy most in any work I find chasing after: what do we, as writers, owe a single idea, but to stretch it out beyond whatever our imaginations thought possible? I love that this is a book of highways and historical touchstones and large geographic shifts. But I also love that at the heart of those bigger things, there is the gentle touch of Brian Phillips underneath it all, creating a landscape for a reader to see not his work, but to better see themselves.” ―Hanif Abdurraqib, author of They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us“Impossible Owls takes you deep into worlds both far-flung and familiar ― tiger trails, tiny towns of the Yukon, Route 66, a Walmart parking lot. Brian Phillips riffs and reports with abiding curiosity and incisive humor. A fantastic, transporting read.” ―Jessica Hopper, author of The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic“The journeys that make up Impossible Owls lead us to some remarkable, unpredictable places, from the Alaskan wilderness to a supermarket parking lot in southern Japan, from an old movie palace in Moscow to the underground histories of northern Oklahoma. But these far-flung tales all share the same inspirational spark: Brian Phillips' soulful, intrepid spirit, and his masterful ability at turning everyday curiosities into epic quests that you can't stop reading.” ―Hua Hsu, author of A Floating Chinaman: Fantasy and Failure Across the Pacific“Brian Phillips's Impossible Owls takes the American essay in new direction― these narratives are simultaneously stories of questing and strandedness. Characters and landscapes become knowable and disorienting. Tigers, royals, mysterious Russian artists and foreign countries are subjects of Phillips's close, careful journalism, as well as representatives of all the glittering, un-graspable things that lie outside us. Witty, pensive, sometimes whimsical, always truthful, Impossible Owls is testament to Phillips's gift for enchantment, and his genius for knowing exactly where our alienation from the world meets our sympathy for it.” ― Supriya Nair "Entertaining, eclectic, and often insightful . . . Phillips’s narrative voice is consistently appealing, and often laugh-out-loud funny . . . Phillips’s essays leave readers with newfound appreciation for subjects they may not have considered before." ―Publishers Weekly"This eclectic collection from journalist Phillips combines in-depth reporting with personal histories to explore broadly the contemporary human condition . . . The subjects have broad appeal and would be enjoyed by anyone interested in New Journalism as a literary genre. Phillips's essays are not only fascinating and thoroughly researched but written in a distinctive voice that conveys humor, awareness, and vulnerability." ―Library Journal

Brian Phillips has the two qualities I adore in a writer: (1) he consistently crystallizes ideas or experiences that I have had in ways that I cannot, and (2) then builds upon those concepts with insights that I immediately understand but would never have identified myself. You know that writing is good when you regularly put down the book just to soak in the last few sentences. That he is also empathetic, humble, and witty is merely a bonus. Buy it, read it, then give it away.

Brian Phillips, of Grantland and MTV News fame (he seems to kill good websites), is a sensational essayist, and the essays in this book point to perhaps his greatest strength: his ability to access truths about human nature via almost any subject (go back and read his essays about Oklahoma State football and a Chthulu-esque monstrosity on Grantland if you need more proof than this book provides). I always learn something from his essays, both about the topic (tigers, Russian animation, sumo) and, more importantly, about myself, as filtered through a mind that makes me feel like the best version of that self. I've been waiting for years for this book and I am so, so glad it's here. You'll love it too, I'm certain.

This is my first online review of anything, ever, so hopefully that says something about Brian’s writing. I don’t enjoy much nonfiction but have compulsively followed Brian’s work since the Grantland days. I pre-ordered four copies of this book and am literally handing them out to friends because I love his essays that much. I’ve read about half of this collection previously and not only do I vividly remember them, but will be happily rereading each piece. I called a friend last night and while raving about a particular paragraph structure from his piece on the Iditarod, she made me read it aloud, and I did, and she promptly bought the book. I would buy thirty more copies if it meant he got to write another one. I cannot articulate sufficient praise on his stories. Buy this.

I picked this book up based on two things: I have a weakness for essays on seemingly random things and I loved the book cover when it popped up in my Amazon recommendations. I was not disappointed. The writing is really well done and the stories that I felt would not be that interesting I ended up enjoying the most (the one comparing Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton, Science Fiction in Small Towns, and Not Your Typical Love Story). Honestly everything in it was worth reading, though I did not enjoy The Little Gray Wolf Will Come as much as the others. Read much more slowly and found the others more interesting. If you like Chuck Klosterman, you will enjoy this book. Highly Recommended

He would disparage the narrowness of this statement (because, among his many qualities, Brian is one of the most humble, open-minded, and generous writers that I know, a vocal and enthusiastic champion of many others' work), but Brian Phillips is one of maybe five living writers whose work justifies living through this moment. Each piece from him is a gift, a dispatch from the home that modern life is continuously foreclosing on and repossessing from me, a dispatch from the place where my emotions were mine, mattered, and made some kind of sense. “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life", Pablo Picasso is said to have said. That dust has become a rubble. At its best, Brian's work is a veritable baptism for my damaged, damaged, late-modern-capitalist-imperial-fragmented-digital-apocalyptic sense of myself. When he was at Grantland, every Friday was an appointment. When they shut it down, we all lost a murderer's row of talent, his was the voice I missed the most. I found myself logging on to its valiant but much-diminished successor, The Ringer, every week, like some sad graying patron continuing to show up at the bar where he once met and lost his first love, every day hoping that Brian would walk through that door.Buy this book. His combination of curiosity, humility, enthusiasm, insight, lyricism, wonder, and flat-out talent will not dissapoint.

Brian Phillips is new to me. I ordered the book only because the epigraph quotes Margaret Lanterman (which set up an expectation about Twin Peaks that wasn't satisfied by a mention of owls in each essay). I loved parts of it but not the whole. Unfortunately the best essay is first -- "Out in the Great Alone," centered around the Iditarod --so it's downhill from there. My next favorite was "Man-Eaters," on tigers in India, and it is luminous and so atmospheric it cast a spell on me. The rest are uneven as a whole, but there are places in each of them when this phrase or that sentence or those paragraphs surprise, delight, intrigue. Phillips has an eye for the unexpected detail and the gift of chasing terrific tangents. Each of these essays has something that makes it worthwhile. I will definitely read his next book.

Brian Phillips barely believes anything. He writes about tigers and tennis and sumo wrestlers, Prince and rodeos and sled dog races and Phillips can hardly begin to believe what he’s seeing. He takes himself to the farthest places (Alaska, The Jungle, Vegas) to interact with people and things on the most distant edge of certainty. Lost there, he reports back his findings.Phillips drives himself into the space where things are so real, so undeniable (Cold, Tigers, Vegas), there’s a reasonable chance they're not actually happening. He pushes and pushes on this doubt via prose and wit and punctuation so staggeringly beautiful, conclusions on reported events become irrelevant. It’s a kind of writing that’s so good, applying its effects to everyday experiences makes the mundane, exquisite. Do it up!

Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place, by Terry Tempest Williams

Amazon.com Review

The only constants in nature are change and death. Terry Tempest Williams, a naturalist and writer from northern Utah, has seen her share of both. The pages of Refuge resound with the deaths of her mother and grandmother and other women from cancer, the result of the American government's ongoing nuclear-weapons tests in the nearby Nevada desert. You won't find the episode in the standard history textbooks; the Feds wouldn't admit to conducting the tests until women and men in Utah, Nevada, and northwestern Arizona took the matter to court in the mid-1980s, and by then thousands of Americans had fallen victim to official technology. Parallel to her account of this devastation, Williams describes changes in bird life at the sanctuaries dotting the shores of the Great Salt Lake as water levels rose during the unusually wet early 1980s and threatened the nesting grounds of dozens of species. In this world of shattered eggs and drowned shorebirds, Williams reckons with the meaning of life, alternating despair and joy.

I remember being fundamentally altered when I first read Refuge by Terry Tempest Williams, altered in a way that I would never look at death the same again. Williams’ book was a symphony sprung from the page as if the earth herself had stirred to speak and once started couldn’t stop. The words, more like poetry than prose, were full of destiny and philosophy and hope. Williams was born a Mormon and while she may not always agree with all of her church’s teachings, there is more than a smattering of that religion, intertwined with the natural world and a family saga, lining these pages. The Catholics teach that Wonder and Awe (also known as Fear of the Lord) is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Wonder and awe is what you’ll feel when reading William’s descriptions of the wildlife and other lives that draw their sustenance from the part of the world in and around the Great Salt Lake. Focused through Williams lens, the connection to Spirit is everywhere, dancing in sparks of life and the precious few moments before death.Refuge chronicles the slow demise of Williams’ mother who is dying of cancer even as the Great Salt Lake is suffering some kind of metamorphic catastrophe of its own as experienced in its meteoric rise. Located in Utah, the Great Salt Lake is the largest salt water lake in the Northern Hemisphere and what the Chesapeake Bay Watershed is to the East: a one-of-a-kind phenomena of nature in all her glorious wonder (and awe). From a record low of 950 square miles in 1963 to a record high of 3,300 square miles in 1988, this is the Dead Sea of the North American content and the largest lake outside of the Great Lakes. The Great Salt Lake’s fungibility is a direct result of its shallowness, like a ginormous playa pond, along with its huge mineral deposits. Millions of birds call the Great Salt Lake their home, and Williams, an avid bird watcher, and naturalist is concerned about the accelerated rise of the Lake that threatens the Bear River Bird Refuge, located on one of the Lake’s three tributaries, and the wildlife that make it their home. She describes the small details of her mother’s last days and the family’s connection to the woman, the land and each other with poignancy and grace. Williams sheer joy at being swept up in life’s more mesmerizing instances can bring you to tears. The simple act of removing the hair from her mother’s hair brush becomes its own prayer, setting it free, out the window, for the birds to use in their nests -- death aiding and encouraging life. Is there anything more sublime? Refuge chronicles both Williams’ struggle to let her mother go, and the Lake’s to hang on even as the sea level rises, wreaking havoc on the lives dependent upon it.In metaphysical circles, water is a metaphor for emotion; the two are inextricable which means Williams’ combination works brilliantly. What drives the book is her poignant reaction to these uncontrollable events, moving along seemingly without her. “I am slowly, painfully discovering that my refuge is not found in my mother, my grandmother, or even the birds of Bear River. My refuge exists in my capacity to love. If I can learn to love death then I can begin to find refuge in change.” Wise words from a wise woman.

Terry Tempest Williams has written a memoir that functions on multiple levels. It is about a number of things that run parallel and seem unrelated, until Williams pulls together all of the threads to present readers with a gorgeous narrative fabric. She lets readers see the stitching, so anyone who thinks that a writer’s work should be both seamless and invisible will not find what they’re looking for here.Williams chronicles the year that the Great Salt Lake threatened to overflow its banks, which would have caused enormous damage to the bird sanctuaries along its shores. Each chapter is named after a different bird that frequents Great Salt Lake’s ecosystem, and alternating chapters detail what is happening in the environment. The other chapters are about Williams’ mother and grandmother, both of whom develop reproductive cancers in the time she is writing about. As Mormons, the women in her family have been raised to put family first, and to assume certain positions both within their families and their church, but to not overstep their bounds. As the impact of the cancers changes the structure of Williams’ family, she writes about how these changes create new roles and lead for a need for a refuge for this “clan of one-breasted women.”As she documents, the lake’s overflowing boundaries, the reproductive cancers, and the way that land in the West has been treated by the U.S. government since its colonization by settlers and the destruction of those indigenous peoples who had inhabited it, are all connected. She shows readers the historical evidence, and as a naturalist, she writes with great authority about what is happening to the land. For some reason, certain readers are offended by this book. But if the idea that women are equal, as citizens and as human beings, is NOT an issue for you, this book is the story of revelation. If you think women are inferior beings, you’ll have to decide whether you’re willing to read a book that might challenge your views.

Read this 15 years ago and just bought for a friend and reread parts. Interesting to read some of the negative reviews as this book has no negatives to it. I have given a couple copies to family members of dying patients over the years with great results. You don't have to be dying or have a dying friend to love this. It transposes nature and its cycles with human life and death in a way no other book has done. It is certainly not a book that is a page turner with an evolving plot. It is a book to be savored and reread, something like The Outermost House, quietly read and felt, and it is in that lofty a category.

I first read this book after a dear friend passed away from ALS. It's such a humanistic story, and yet a story of Planet Earth and the ecosystem and our place, as human beings, in the order of nature.Yes, the author is Mormon, but she isn't preaching her religion. Rather, she takes a nondenominational and spiritual approach. Her love of nature and wildlife shines through the book, and I related to her analogies about the shrinking wetlands and loss of wildlife habitat.I found this book profoundly moving, and when my sister-in-law's mother was diagnosed with cancer, I bought it for her.I can't recommend this book highly enough. It can be comforting to those who fear illness, and also to those who seek a greater understanding of spirituality and the natural world.

This is a remarkable book, and well deserves its reputation. Williams juxtaposes her mother’s death by cancer with a dying wildlife refuge as the Great Salt Lake floods. While doing so, she manages to play the characteristics of specific bird species against what is going on in her family’s lives. It could easily be done poorly - but oh! she can write. It’s a hard book, especially if you’ve watched someone die slowly. But it’s a beautiful book, too.

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and I just love this picture book because it has such great vocabulary to teach persistence (dedication, practice, determination, challenge, accomplishment, and acknowledgments are the words I target). The main character, Charlie, has a growth mindset and reaches his goals as a result of hard-work. I like the recurring use of "big hearted" as I use this idiom to teach my young students about figurative language. I would recommend "Big Hearted Charlie Runs the Mile" to all students to help them understand that learning comes with time, dedication, and hard-work.

Big heart and attitude is what this book conveys in positive loving manner.Awesome motivational story for my kids and more adults should keep this on their desk.Go Charlie!!!!!

I actually bought four of these, to give to the children of our friends. Love the book and teaching kids that the idea of hard work and a positive mind-set can literally change the world. Awesome book for kids, and an amazing tribute from his Mother.

Wonderful story that I'm proud to read to my kids. It's a sweet and inspiring example of how love and hard work can shape such strength of character. I'm grateful for men like Charlie and their enormous sacrifice for our country.

Love, Love, Love, the book. A great book for a great man.

Reading this to a child, or having a child read it on their own, would impart a 'never give up' attitude. Reading this myself and knowing what a Gold Star Mother is, had me crying through every page. I bought two books. I plan on giving them as gifts - the pictures are wonderful...the words inspirational and any mother who has had to encourage their child will see that bond between mother and son that nothing.....can ever separate. Thank you Krista for writing this book. It certainly honors your son - and I know will show other children to never give up on their dreams.

So sweet to read. I love the back story about the mom writing the book for her son who has passed away now. It's a nice story about never giving up. No reference is made about her son passing away...just the beautiful person he was. I love it for the kids and even myself. Life is so short and fast we have to remember to love each other...this book is a great reminder.

I bought this for my 5 & 6 year old grandsons. One has a difficult time persevering and the other wants to be a soldier when he grows up. This book was perfect for both. They love it and want it read over and over. Definitely money well spent!

The Mist is my favorite King novella. I'm a big fan of Lovecraft and this, along with The Raft, are his most Lovecraftian tales IMHO. To me, this is King at his best. The story is paced well, you really come to care about the protagonist. To borrow from the story, it's an Alfred Hitchcock ending. Obviously, the book is infinitely better then either the big screen or little screen versions. The movie was ok until the ending (should have remained true to the original) and let's not even talk about the TV show.I've recently read an idea that sort of ties this in with the DT series. The Arrowhead Project created a thinny, letting some of the things Outside into this particular Earth.

I got back into reading thanks to Stephen King, having stopped reading after graduating high school. After working through some of his works, 'The Shining' being the novel that truly wet my mouth for more, I ventured off to taste the work of other authors. I was safe with the King but that couldn't be what reading was about for me, or eventually I'd find myself without anything else to read, thus giving up reading for a second and possibly final time.So it has been a few months since my last King book, and reading 'The Mist' reminded me how potent good writing can be.I LOVE 'The Mist'. I saw the movie first, years ago, and was dumbstruck. This novel only solidifies my gawking at his horror. This book doesn't just present you with evil monsters outside in the mist. In fact, King reveals the monsters INSIDE the store, and the psychology of fear and anger and the deadly combination of the two.Mob mentality is truly something to witness, and King brings us as close as he can while tempers rose and fear swallows them up resulting in death and more death.Being as I just finished, I could ramble on forever honestly. This is a quick, gripping novella that shows Kings teeth are as sharp regardless of his story's length. If you haven't read any King before (how can that be?!) then this is a great story to start with. If you have experience with King but haven't experienced 'The Mist', do something nice for yourself and dive in!

I remember moving to Viriginia from NYC shortly after getting married in the fall of 1997. I was a diehard reader. Having commuted to and from work in NY, I got plenty of time to read riding on the subways. In Virginia though, specifically Northern Va, it's drive, drive, drive. My commute was 60 miles round trip daily and this cut into my read time heavily. This is where my foray into Audio books came in. I went right for one that was written by one of my favorite authors Stephen King. Confession: I had actually read this book in novel format, but never listened to an audio book before. I was surprised how good the novel remained having now been acted out with actors. The movie remake was exceptional too, but nothing like the creepiness of this book when I first read it. I never get tired of reading a Stephen King novel and definitely have not lost that creepy feeling whenever I read this book over and over again. The open-ended ending leaves a bit to be desired, but it doesn't mess it up for me. It's still one of my favorite Stephen King books ever!

Likes: great character building (seemingly as always with his books), descriptive environments, and different from the movie which I unfortunately watched first. I think I liked how well he describes the way the characters are reacting to the situation as it occurs. People don’t just band together, and save the day during a crisis. Especially something as dark and preternatural as this, people would simply go crazy, or latch onto anything for that sliver of release from their fears.Dislikes: he even criticized it, but the ambiguity the ending brings. I enjoy being left to interpret some things, but I felt this left too much to the reader. I felt the stereotypes used are a bit played out; religious zealot, dumb country bumpkins, etc. I did feel the relationship between the main character and another supporting character was completely unnecessary, and honestly didn’t make sense. I think that he projected himself onto the main character a little which can be a turnoff for me.All in all this is another excellent Stephen King story.

Stephen King has long been one of my favorite authors. Some books are mind boggling, but all are good. This book is one of his best works in my opinion. Thank you Stephen for the entertainment.

I loved this story from the time I first read it in a book of short stories Stephen King had put out. I like most of his older books, but there were several that stood out and this was one of them. If you love horror, suspense, and danger, you're going to like this one.

I watch the show and I watched the movie, so I felt inclined to read the book as well. Definitely enjoyed it. None of the 3 are exactly the same, so you really don’t know what to expect.

Great thriller but read it before watching the movie. Much more involved and deeper character development. Another Stephen King masterpiece.

I bought this book because I associate with several people who are involved with Maurice Harker's program, Sons of Helaman. I have been impressed with their sincerity and their willingness to share the powerful skills they have learned. Because my life has been touched by addiction, sexual addiction and other types of addiction, I was very interested to learn in greater detail what this program was all about. So I downloaded it yesterday. I couldn't put it down, and finished it late last night. This book communicates very simply and powerfully some tools that I see as revolutionary in the battle against Satan, he who would destroy our souls and our families. I love this book! As I read, I felt so powerfully moved, I had visions of getting this book into the hands of my loved ones who struggle with addiction (not just sexual addiction), my bishop and stake president, and friends who have sons that struggle with addiction.I appreciated the frankness in dealing with a difficult subject. I was especially won by the fact that the book has both a scientific and a spiritual basis for this new approach. If you have lost hope, Maurice Harker's program is the place to begin again. Read it and you will have a new battle plan, starting today, for fighing any kind of addiction!

I think this is an absolutely fantastic Buck! The reason that I am only giving it four stars is because it doesn't meet our needs as much as I had hoped. I have a son who has normal hormones but who has delayed cognition. I think that this is a fun and entertaining way to get the point across and help talk about a very challenging subject. I just wish there were pictures or something maybe simpler text I'm not exactly sure how it could be better to help the specific population that I'm looking for. I know my circumstances and situation is different than most people so if you have a neurotypical Child you will probably not be disappointed in this book at all! Because our circumstances are unique I think it makes this book a little bit more challenging. I would love to see the same idea in more of a picture book format or with simplistic words that are easy to follow on a third or fourth grade level.

The author works with young men of the Mormon faith who are stuggling with pornography addiction. In order for them to serve as missionaries, or later get married in the Mormon temple, they must demonstrate a reasonable level of sobriety. Harker’s methods are unorthodox and he uses a military training-style that puts the young men in small teams who work together for a common goal. They are given drills they must do at home like “going to the flag pole”. This is place near where they live where they can immediately go to gather their thoughts when they are tempted to relapse. By practicing the drill, when they actually do have a moment of weakness, they are ready to go directly to the flagpole. It’s usually the mailbox or something nearby like a stop sign. It gets them out of the immediate environment (alone with a computer or electronic device) and gives them time to think and avoid the relapse. His methods work for this particular niche of young LDS men dealing with this problem, but with few exceptions like working as teams and the “flag pole”, they probably won’t be as appealing to others outside the church trying to overcome pornography addiction. Having said that, as someone who also works with addicts in another state, I welcome any new therapies that work. It looks like Harker is on to something.

Good read. I am a recovering addict to pornography and sexual addiction. 14 months ago I couldn't nor would I say that. I have been in recovery for over a year now and have had great success due to several reasons, the most important being that I had a realization that I couldn't do it on my own....I needed help! I have been attending an addiction recovery meeting faithfully for the last 13 months and have been "sober" for the last 14 months. I have been blessed to be encircled by a loving and forgiving wife, a loving church leader, a loving Heavenly Father, and my Savior, Jesus Christ. You can read all the books you want, you can attend all the meetings you want, but in order to have true recovery you need to be surrounded by a loving support group, people who love you and you need to be willing to FIGHT! This is a battle for the soul, my friend. My wife purchased this book and read it and recommended that I read it...After many months of putting it off, I read it and just finished it last week. I came to some important realizations. The first being that we, all of us, are in a war against Satan and pornography. This book helped shed further light that I need to build a strong defense against such a war and fight with "ferosity". I love that word, "ferosity". This is not a single battle, it is a LIFE LONG battle. Pornography affects good people. Good read for parents and husbands and wives. Pornography is a plague, as spoken of in the Bible. It can ruin lives and it can ruin relationships and it can ruin families. Recovery is possible but you need support....you can't do it by yourself. You can't do it alone.

kids loses self esteem and self control through pornography. grades drop and life start to stink depending what other think. this book has great ideas for helping boys get over this addiction and helped me see my son for who he is in this fight against satan. mormon spin on things with a long term solution. highly highly recommend

Excellent book on how to overcome pornography or any other addiction. Short, simple and extremely helpful. If you're familiar with the Book of Mormon, you'll totally get it! If not, the warrior concepts are still applicable and very helpful!

I gave this book 5 stars for a few reasons. The price point for both books was very fair, I don't fee ripped off or let down after finishing both books. They were very entertaining and tough to put down. Each book took me about 3 hours to finish, but for the price, it's what I expected. I'll be looking into more books by Jack Hunt for sure. The story itself felt very real. I was worried Sam would come across as some super badass and the story might come off as cheesy, but that wasn't the case. The character made the best decisions with the situation given to him. The family dynamic was interesting as well. After finishing it, I would love to see what happens in Breckenridge after As We Break. Like I said, great read!

I loved this series! Lots of action, characters that are likable and some different scenarios. I can't wait to read more by this author!

Final book of two book series. Great read. Some editing issues, but no stars withheld. Engaging characters, drama and action. SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win. It’s nice to read a book with an actual ending now and then.@-->-->---If this review was helpful to you, please click YES below. Thank you.

Finally finished the second book. I was holding off so that I would have a great book to read when nothing else was available. Kudos to the Author! A+

This second volume keeps the action moving as the interest group of characters struggle to save themselves, their Colorado town or the entire world. My one issue is the premise that the national Grid could be switched in and off with a few keyboard strokes. Thank you Jack!

Jack Hunt is an exceptional writer. I have read six of his books and enjoyed all of them. The characters in these two books were well developed and the storyline was interesting and kept me glued to my chair reading. I recommend this book to all who like this genre.

This is the final book of the two book series. I am breathless after just finishing it's reading. That was some action packed story! Will Mason return from California? Will the Minuteman security system be upgraded to keep us all safe from nuclear disaster?Liked both books. Mr. Hunt really spins a great yarn!Highly recommend in this genre! !

Great concussion, the second book gave the characters time to be more interesting and for us to care more about them. Scary that this could be closer to the truth than we would like. Well done, Jack.
