We just returned from two weeks in Romania. We took both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. It seemed like the Rough Guide always had the more complete information, at least in the areas we visited (Maramures, Sic, Sighashora, Brasov). We could have left Lonely Planet home. BTW, we loved Romania. Best part was Maramures, best spot Breb.

The level of detail in this Rough Guide is even better than their many other fine books. Great sightseeing detail and the usual well-considered accommodation suggestions. Also included is a small language section with travel-useful words and phrases (there are not many such language items in print now elsewhere). A good map is needed for best use of the book (Amazon.com has several).

Book looks brand new; good price and saved me over 50%. Arrived yesterday, so at the far end of the shipping window, but I'm not in a hurry.

Finally a brand spanking new update to this excellent guide. The last edition was October 2004.I have been to Romania 10 times and I still am discovering new places in this fascinating country.Highly recommended !!!

My first time using a Rough Guide Travel book, and I'm pleased with the information in it. Very detailed about so many specific areas of Romania. My only wish is that they give a few more reviews of hotels and places to stay. Other than that looking forward to my holiday in Romania using this book!

I liked this book. No, I really, really liked this book. I read true crime, but too often there is a hundred pages or more of background information that didn't need to be added.This book has exactly the right amount of information. There is just enough background to make it worth the read. I wish there were more books like this one that give the facts, fleshed out enough to be understood without endless trial notes, long winded background stories, etc.This is a horrifying story, slight gruesome without being macabre. The story is a fast read and if you are like myself, you will read it straight through to the end.Arnold Sodeman was a strange bird. No one will ever really know if his brain issues actually put him into a fugue state or if he merely claimed it to have a "reason" for a seemingly insensible crime.

Here is another cringing book. He was a sick person as many saw. Only too bad he didn't get help as needed. I know it was a very long time ago, but, it is shameful how he could kill all these children and get away with it. People should have investigated him, especially if they knew his parents history. Here really is a sick person. What I don't understand is his reaction after he strangles them and they drop to the ground. It's like, "Oops, I dropped my candy bar", or whatever, for example. He is supposedly in a trance when he kills but then suddenly, out of a clear blue sky he wakes up. That's when the bodies fall to the floor after they were strangled. So, is he really aware of his actions or he is just too sick to understand? The main thing is that he got what he deserved.

Reading this book, you are not only horrified at the brutal nature of the crimes visited onto young children but also by their seeming inevitability. The perpetrator was doomed from the start, his family rife with mental illness and instability. In modern times, given the right circumstances he might have received the care he needed to curtail his deadly urges but in the 1930's there was almost no chance of him getting help before it was too late. This book is a short read that packs a wallop! The author packs in much historical information that puts the life of this brutal man in stark perspective. A good read for lovers of true crime.

The book Arnold Sodeman: The True Story of the Schoolgirl Strangler: Historical Serial Killers and Murderers is short and seems to be concise. Character development was minimal, there is very little in the book about Arnold Sodeman the man or his family. The book reminds us several times that mental illness ran through the father's side of his family. It's still not clear to me why he killed the schoolgirls. The book is okay and I will read more from this author.

This was a surprisingly well written and researched true story. I'd never heard of Sodeman before, but by the end of the story I felt sorry not only for his victims, but for the man himself. That is something that rarely happens after I've read a "True story." Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.

Really interesting story about a serial killer that for so long could fly under the radar and how he could live a normal life but still commit these gruesome murders.I highly recommend this for someone who loves stories about serial killers!I'm looking forward for more stories from the author!

The book showed some insight into the problems the brain has when there are chromosomes added or missing. It didn't change the outcome at court but is something that should be investigated and perhaps children can be diagnosed and helped before the condition turns them into killers. Like it did for Arnold. The author wrote the book well with the history and story of the time and then opened a door into the medical science of the brain it added more interest to the reading and allowed you to feel some empathy for Arnold.

This book is like a Reader's Digest version of this story. I would have expected to learn about the victims.and their families as well as Soderman and his family. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions.

I love the authors, the Pendergast series and was looking for the spanish version of it to give as a gift. Loved it!

The first book I read containing the character of Agent Pendergast was The Cabinet of Curiosities (I may have just paraphrased a book title--my memory is so lame these days) and I found it to be a most satisfactory combination of macabre fact, macabre fiction, hair raising action of the race against time and against all odds missions and compelliing characters, especially the mysterious and amazing Aloysius Pendergast. I learned something, having previously no knowledge whatsoever about Cabinets of Curiosity and the origins of Museums and as someone who spent a childhood happily wandering the Smithsonian Museums I appreciate that new insight and followed it up with some fascinating nonfiction reading. "The Reliquary" was an equally satisfying concoction from that basic recipe. Really, what more could a person ask for; fast paced fun entertainment from which one learns something so interesting you follow up that information on your own? For anyone interested in TED talks, Douglas Preston gives a fascinating one. Check it out. As for me, my next read will be the one the authors recommend in the post script to Reliquary, a non fiction called "The Mole People" about the thousands of people living in the miles of tunnels as much as 30 stories under New York. This I did not know, and it is so extreme and incredible I want to know more, though it is a grim commentary on what it is to be American, to be sure. So, all this superfluous verbiage when I probably could have just said "The Reliquary "- a fun modern science adventure a la journey to the center of the earth or Jurrasic Park (but like a million times better of course) with smart heroes and strong female characters, creepy creeps; obstructive jerks that remind you of people you have known and loathed, good science and evil science with riddles to solve and twists aplenty all consructed on a foundation of contemporary urban fact to spark the interest of the deeper intellect and lifelong learner. I hope that sums it up without spoiling it by spilling it.

I started checking this book out of the library over 20 yrs ago. I first tried the Arroz Blanco perfect white rice, and let me tell you what it is.! No matter if you are cooking one cup of rice or 12 cups of rice this recipe has been my go-to method ever since I first picked up this book. Prior to checking this book out from the library I could not make rice to save my life. I remember periodically I would keep going back to the library to take the book out again and again for various other recipes I remember standing in the library and making photocopies of certain recipes. Recently someone was telling me they are very challenged with making rice so I was explaining the method that I used and they thought I was crazy. It reminded me of this cookbook so decided to purchase my own copy I don't know what took me so long because there are so many amazing recipes in this book! My daughter recently tried the rice recipe and she was shocked at how fluffy the rice came out and how perfectly cooked it was. My mother now also only Cooks rice the way this book taught me to. I highly recommend you get this book

I did the rest of you a favor and purchased Cuban Table as well. Take it from me, once you know a few basics with Cuban recipes, as all of you with Cuban grandmothers know, you have the Cuban kitchen down pat. The Cuban Table has rave reviews, but this book has 200 recipes with many interesting variations. I was able to locate marinades that I loved and enjoyed with friends in Hialeah, and even recipes that I enjoyed at fancy restaurants in Coral Gables. As far as for your weekly bang-for-the-buck as a home cook, Memories of a Cuban Kitchen will help you stretch your dollar while feeling full, satisfied, and entertained. Cubans are experts at turning lower-cost cuts of meat into fabulous dishes. With that being said, the recipes are not terribly complex, do not require ingredients you've never heard of, and once you have your kitchen basically stocked, you will be able to wow your family with the techniques and flavors lavished in this book. Don't go for flair, go for substance. This book has substance. Also, as an aside, a wonderful history on pre-Castro Cuba precedes every section of recipes.

This is the textbook for cooking Cuban food if you ask my family (all Cuban immigrants). And growing up on this food, I can't disagree. It is amazing. I buy copies of this book for anyone who says they want to learn to cook Cuban food. There are some modern innovations that make some of these recipes easier though. So pro-tip: For Ropa Vieja, cook the meat in a pressure cooker or slow cooker if you don't want to spend hours shredding the beef shoulder by hand

I've tried a couple Cuban cookbooks, and this is hands down my favorite. It's the most authentic cookbook I've encountered; the closest to the way my mother and grandmother cook. Not only are the recipes great, but I love the family stories and the background that's provided for when one might actually have encountered the various dishes in a Cuban household, which ones were everyday dishes, which were things you only saw during the holidays or at parties, etc. I love this cookbook so much, over the years I've purchased one for myself as well as many other copies for friends.

As a cook myself, I can tell you that this is by far the best Cuban food recipe cook book ever written, it has all the authentic classical dishes that we Cubans grew up with, and many other dishes, desserts and drinks , and along the way , it also has a lot of interesting history of the pre Castro era, when Cuba was a wonderful paradise to live in. You will not regret getting this gem of a book👍 Happy Cooking🇨🇺

Having a dear friend who is from Cuba, we are treated to wonderful meals from his home land whenever he invites us for dinner. He doesn't cook with recipes and when we query him about how he put together such delicious empanadas or cuban roast pork, he waves his hand and says "I never measure. I go by instinct!"Well his instinct is phenomenal...mine, not so much. When I constantly bemoaned the fact that I could never duplicate his delicious culinary creations, he surprised me one Christmas with this cookbook. He said he perused countless Cuban cookbooks out on the market to find the one he wanted for me and Memories of a Cuban Kitchen invoked the recipes and ingredients he remembered from his childhood.The recipes are easy to follow and the cookbook is organized very nicely. There is also a glossary of terms that is very helpful. The ingredients you can find in any food store and after being introduced to Mojo, it is now a staple in my pantry. The recipes use lots of garlic which my friend always says to me..."if the recipe calls for four cloves, you put in eight!!" We love garlic and I think it is what makes the Cuban dishes so delicious. I always thought that Cuban food was spicy, but it is not. It is very flavorful, but not necessarily spicy hot.Mom's Black Beans are to die for as are the Cuban Pork Chops. The Cuban sandwiches are all mouthwatering wonderful and the fillings for the tea sandwiches are amazing. I made the sandwiches for a church brunch and everyone was very impressed. The rice pudding is a fabulous dessert for the culmination of your Cuban feast.This cookbook is one to have on the shelf to pull out when you want to savor some outstanding comfort food from Cuba.

Book bought "used in GOOD condition". I was pleasantly surprised upon opening the package to find a book in almost brand new condition. Being a cookbook, I expected quite a bit of wear & tear, even if listed a good condition.Living in south Florida for 50 years, I have been exposed to authentic Cuban food, this cookbook contains all the favorites you'd expect and then some. Best book on Cuban food I've found.
