I feel like the title of this book misrepresents its content. What I thought I was purchasing were some techniques and methods on parenting by a psychologist. Instead I felt like I was reading an editorial piece on the U.S. maternity leave and daycare.I'm giving the book more than one star because I agree with a lot of things she says (of course I think the US should have a better maternity policy and that you should listen to your kid). And it was interesting to read about other cultures, even if she didn't necessarily convince me why their approaches are better for long term effects. However, I felt she overly idealized some cultures and made some leaps in logic. For instance, I felt that she implied daycare is the reason for mass shootings nowadays. Interesting concept, but not really a strategy for raising a child or something that is helpful to me as a parent right now.The biggest problem I had with this book is her footnotes. After one particular "fact" that I read, I clicked on the footnote to look at the reference. I expected to be led to a study on PubMed, but instead it was a NPR broadcast. She even has Wikipedia as a reference. I feel that it's quite misleading to present "facts" without references to peer reviewed studies.I would certainly not recommend this book to another parent. To me, the author was on a soapbox about certain issues and did not deliver on the title or synopsis.

As a man wanting to one day be a father, I found the experiences and lessons shared in The Mindful Parent invaluable. I too have traveled quite a bit in an effort to understand various ways of living and creating families. While my unprofessional observations were not near as detailed as Dr. Peterson's, I definitely agree with her that there are golden nuggets in the peaceful cultures and it was wonderful to read the conclusions and thoughts of someone who has dedicated her life to treating patients and helping them overcome difficulties related to early childhood experiences. The book reinforced in me the special importance of a child's early life in a way that sounds possible for me to carry out when I have children.

Excellent Resource for all!Easy to read and understand no matter who you are or why you've selected this book. I wish everyone would read this book because it explains the importance of attachment, especially from birth (even pre-birth) to at least age three. Critical stages in one's human development. Even the Dalai Lama has quoted this book and endorsed the author stating "the critical period of brain development from the time of birth up to at least the age of three or four, during which time loving physical contact is the single most important factor for the normal growth of the child."The author has clearly researched this entire book, to the tune of more than 20 pages of scientific evidence based research references in the back. In fact, some of the references are great to read as well. It's obvious she has been a practicing psychologist for decades, traveled the world and is passionate about the importance of raising kind, mindful children to positively impact our entire world. The book includes simple, practical tools that will increase attachment between parents and children, ultimately creating healthy, loving humans as a result. The examples from her global travels are insightful and fun to read, which demonstrates the significance of why healthy attachment is important, and essential in human development. The tools and things Dr. Peterson encourages in her book are easy to implement no matter where in the world one resides and regardless of socio-economic status. If one is not a parent, this book is a great resource because it might help explain how come a person behaves, thinks or feels a certain way as they grow into adulthood, or maybe are having issues in attaching in an intimate relationship. Eye opening! Brilliant read that is extensively researched!

As a first time mama with very little baby experience, this book has been a real gift. In our society that seems focused on various types of baby training and conforming babies to our lifestyles, this book really helped support my own maternal instincts. Everything Dr. Peterson writes about resonated with my heart. I want to nurture and love my wee babe; not force him to conform to my busy American life. This book really validated my beliefs. And I was so inspired by the beautiful stories of how peaceful cultures truly cherish their young. Babies and children are blessings not burdens. Thank you Dr. Peterson for helping me find my way and follow my heart.

Great book except for the fact that chapter 3 is missing...pages 32-56 were missing and then another part resduplicated. Other friends bought book in a book store and had NO issues..

Great book very impressive how far behind we are on our society. We have a lot to do on our homes! Thanks for the book!

Amazing! Loving every page and using it daily

Review

“America’s favorite poet.”—The Wall Street Journal“[Billy Collins] is able, with precious few words, to make me cry. Or laugh out loud. He is a remarkable artist. To have such power in such an abbreviated form is deeply inspiring.”—J. J. Abrams, The New York Times Book Review   “His work is poignant, straightforward, usually funny and imaginative, also nuanced and surprising. It bears repeated reading and reading aloud.”—The Plain Dealer   “Collins has earned almost rock-star status. . . . He knows how to write layered, subtly witty poems that anyone can understand and appreciate—even those who don’t normally like poetry. . . . The Collins in these pages is distinctive, evocative, and knows how to make the genre fresh and relevant.”—The Christian Science Monitor   “Collins’s new poems contain everything you've come to expect from a Billy Collins poem. They stand solidly on even ground, chiseled and unbreakable. Their phrasing is elegant, the humor is alive, and the speaker continues to stroll at his own pace through the plainness of American life.”—The Daily Beast   “[Collins’s] poetry presents simple observations, which create a shared experience between Collins and his readers, while further revealing how he takes life’s everyday humdrum experiences and makes them vibrant.”—The Times Leader   “Former poet laureate and reader favorite Collins, the maestro of the running-brook line and the clever pivot, celebrates the resonance and absurdity of what might be called the poet’s attention-surfeit disorder. . . . But Collins’s droll wit is often a diversionary tactic, so that when he strikes you with the hard edge of his darker visions, you reel.”—Booklist“A stellar jumping-off point . . . a joyride through all layers of his approach from 2002 to the present, which should not only please his current fans, but inspire many others to dive into Mr. Collins’s work, headfirst.”—The Rumpus

What a talent. Oops, I'd never heard of Billy Collins until he read the most delicious poem on the new Prarie Home Companion radio show. Poetry is manna to my soul and Collins' funny and deep introspective reflections on the human heart, on the ordinary, on the every day are surprising and even affirming. Loved this book and am in awe of this poet. Great read in delectable little morsels, one per page. Yum.

Billy Collins poems cover a wide range of subject matter they're thought provoking & beautiful. I find myself frequently revisiting this book whether curled up on the couch or needing a quiet pick me up at work on a stressful day. It's a big book of quiet comfort I highly recommend

This is a "recent best of..." collection that has both funny and serious poems, each with that unique narrative Billy Collins voice ("that isn't the author's voice").There are a lot of contemporary poets out there today who don't like Billy Collins because he is accessible to "non-elites." The average person can pick up a book of his poetry and enjoy it. His poems speak on many levels, so it is quite simple to read a work of his and enjoy it at face value. But a person can also look deeper and find those little abstractions, bits of symbolism, and other aspects present in literature and poetry. It is this ability that makes Collins a good poet, and makes him exceptionally talented to continue to pursue one of his passions -- to bring the joy of poetry to the widest audience possible. Poetry shouldn't be restricted to the academics, it shouldn't be restricted to an elite few, it should be shared with all. This book does that. How else could a book of poetry be discussed on The Colbert Report and include an entertaining interview with Collins (and a co-reading with Stephen Colbert of "To My Favorite 17-Year-Old High School Girl")?If you're looking for a good entrance into the world of poetry, you won't go wrong with this. If you've enjoyed Billy Collins in the past, then this book absolutely must become a part of your collection. And if you don't like Collins because you're a (jealous) elitist, then go away.

Billy Collins has a sense of humor that is ALWAYS in play.So many of his poems end with an unexpected twist or turn. And yet each is welcome and one never has the sense of "there's the hook".It always seems original and fresh. Not that this is a "laugh book". Collins' work can be moving as well as light. But how can you not love a poem like "Hangover"?HangoverIf I were crowned emperor this morning, every child who is playing Marco Poloin the swimming pool of this motel, shouting the name Marco Polo back and forthMarco Polo Marco Polowould be required to read a biographyof Marco Polo-a long one with fine print-as well as a history of China and of Venice, the birthplace of the venerated explorerMarco Polo Marco Poloafter which each child would be quizzedby me then executed by drowningregardless how much they managedto retain about the glorious life and times ofMarco Polo Marco Polo

I am a poetry person and a fan of Billy Collins, relishing his droll humor and ability to nail human foibles and relationships. I own most of his books and attend his readings. What is high praise is that my husband--a non-poetry person--also read and relished this book.

This one's for you, Billy:Pompous, punctilious pedagogues preachThat penetrability has no placeIn the prestigious penthouse of poetryThat meaning needs cloakingIn obfuscationOr reference to lesser-known tropesThat grokking the essenceRequires more effortThan digging to ChinaWith a plastic forkBut truth and beautyHave never been shyAbout hiding in plain sightAnd humor and whimsyAre scalpels that sliceThrough the skin to the inner light

Billy Collins is the best of the best in poetry. He has a gift for painting a picture with words that connect the experience with the emotion. His art for simple detail brings his writing to life. In college, poetry was defined as "all of the best words in all of the best places". Billy Collins has no match. Pull up a chair and feast on a refreshing banquet of words so cleverly placed.

I have been a Billy Collins fan for a long time (me and a lot of other people!) and this book is a really good o ne. I don't know how he (Billy Collins) does it, but when I pick up this book and read a poem I am - more often than not - instantly transformed. Life becomes fascinating, important, joyous, by the time I have finished the poem. I think "I feel like that" or "I could love like that" or "I do love like that" or "I love life as much as that" or Wow!"

From Booklist

Greg Heffley’s eighth adventure (but who’s counting?) centers on his relationship with his best friend, Rowley—more specifically, the demise of that relationship when Rowley gets a girlfriend. At first, Greg tries to insert himself into the mix, but he soon tires of Abigail’s pathological control (she changes Rowley’s hairstyle) and fussy propriety (she won’t let him eat off of the cafeteria floor). And so Greg must navigate the minefield of middle school, with its hero points, dollar-store sneakers, and the looming shadow of summer school, all by himself. Without a sidekick, Greg spends more time at home, suffering the attentions of his “colorful” extended family, like Aunt Audra, who drags him along to a psychic visit. Greg begins consulting Rodrick’s forgotten Magic 8 Ball and thinks maybe that will turn his luck around. As ever, Kinney strikes his comic target in the bull’s-eye, exaggerating the trials of adolescence just enough to make them real while deftly exposing the insecurities behind Greg’s bravado with his super, simple drawings. Will Greg and Rowley make up? Either way, devotees need not worry; there is plenty more angst in store. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Kinney’s books are best-sellers on every list out there, and his rabid fans will be chomping at the bit to get another taste of the Wimpy Kid. Grades 5-8. --Thom Barthelmess

#2,033 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Once you start this series, you know you have to read each new one! And you know I am waaay to old for this stuff, but it is funny and it brings back some great middle school memories. I guess I am not alone judging from the number of reviews already out for a book released less than a week ago. Pretty quick read as usual and this was one of the funnier ones. When does #9 come out? And no, don't want to hear comments that this is the last one - inside page says COMING SOON - More Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

All of these books have what would be considered slightly gross stuff in it. Fortunately that was enough to get my two oldest kids hooked.I'd rarely been able to get oldest to read anything, then as these came out he could hardly wait for them to arrive. It also got him interested in reading other books that were similar. He read these books long after they became too easy for him.My second kid had all 8 of these available when he got to the point of not wanting to read, and it only took book 1 to get him hooked. While he doesn't read these any more, he does love manga. So I'm very grateful for these books to spur his interest in reading.

This is an accelerated reader (AR) book - reading level 5.5 - AR Pts: 3.0Greg's best friend, Rowley, has ditched him, and finding new friends in middle school is proving to be a tough task. Will a roll of the dice turn things around, or is Greg's life destined to be just another hard-luck story? Read to find out!My son bought 3 books with his own birthday money and this was one of them (they were all Wimpy Kid Books)! He's a big Wimpy Kid fan and he was excited to get his hands on this one. A funny book, hard to put down and a very good series. Another Good Book in the Series!

It was pretty much similar to all the other books. It's not one of those books that you get hooked to, and can't wait for the movie to come out like the Hunger Games series and the Divergent series. But its better for younger kids around 3rd grade or so. Maybe older kids might read it just for fun or if they're bored or something like that. But I kinda think the author is running out of ideas since this is the 8th book and all. It doesn't have very much suspense, though. And, that's the biggest thing I look forward to into a book. So, if you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, I think this might be okay to read. Thank you for reading my opinion of this book.

There's something quite extraordinary about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books. I tutor a lot of kids, ranging from grades K-12, and so many of these kids, especially the ones in Grades 2-8 love this series, and that is special indeed. My 8.5-year-old daughter is a great fan too, and after reading several of the books including this latest in the series, I can see what all the fuss is about. The stories of Greg Heffley and his misadventures with his friends as they go through their school years make for fun and engaging reading, and the author's blend of satire and cartoon drawings makes this something that can be enjoyed by both younger children, adolescents, and even adults. True, Greg Heffley is not always the most sympathetic of characters, but even with all his flaws, there's an undefinable quality about this kid that just sucks you right into whatever drama he's experiencing. In "Hard Luck", Greg is placed in a quandary when his best friend Rowley ditches him. Who is to be Greg's new best friend? Finding a best friend in middle school is not going to be easy and when Greg decides to leave it to luck, well, things start happening Wimpy Kid style! A fun and entertaining read!

We loved this series and added this book to our collection as a replacement (my son lent his copy to someone at camp and never got it back). If you have a hard time getting your kid to read, then go ahead and get this Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Its funny and clever. The author is spot on with his humor. You will love it, even with a kid around.

My 6 year old son began reading "Wimpy Kid" books just as he was learning to read. Many times I would allow him to read before bed and would hear him laughing hysterically in his room. Now, 7 years old, he has read all of them and often will pick them up and read them again. They are silly, but the appeal to his age demographic was actually amazing to me. I didn't have to make him read... he wanted to read. And he loved them all. I would recommend the entire series to any parent of a child who is learning and becoming comfortable with reading comprehension.

Greg and Rowley usually get into arguments a lot in the books then they come back to being best friends again. Well it's good that they've stopped that from the Long Haul to the Meltdown. (At least for now)

My 11-year-old is not a reader but the Wimpy Kid books are my go-to. He reads all of them a couple of times but this is the first time he's ever read one three times (and counting) in rapid succession. As soon as he finishes it, he starts it again! He said it's his favorite book of all the Wimpy Kid books because the story is less general than the rest. I may have to buy him a new copy before the year's out, and I don't mind as long as he's READING!

This is not a bad book. Nor is it particularly poorly written. I just think it is a bit misguided. This is my first Jennie Allen book and, after reading many glowing reviews (and a couple of not so glowing ones), I was ready to jump right in. I am no stranger to journaling (I understood from a review or two that this would be necessary) so I was poised to dig, journal and discover what it means to dream again -- all with Jennie Allen cheering me along the way.And that’s exactly what she does. Early on in the book, I felt understood -- after all, she too was a wife and mom who struggled with a sense of purpose and that restless feeling we all seem to get in our lives at some point or another. Jennie felt like a friend who understood (who would love to be discussing your hopes and dreams over coffee right this instant, but simply couldn’t), and the conversational tone of this book makes it both engaging and easy to read. Jennie is nothing if not sincere. She sincerely wants you to realize that God has uniquely equipped you with gifts, and she sincerely wants you to passionately pursue God’s call and purpose for your life. And these are very good things. The journaling activities are meant to help you discern what your giftings and calling might be. You were asked to write about your own story, highlighting unique instances when you felt joy and delight in what you were doing, and she also directs you to see how God might use suffering in your life to fuel your passions or to enable you to help others who suffer. She encourages you to write about the places you encounter regularly and how you might live more meaningfully and purposefully as you engage with those places. In short, she helps you to connect the dots of your life: your gifts, the people in your life who need you (and whom you need), the suffering you have endured, the places you regularly encounter and the passions you have all to help you pinpoint what your purpose might be.And she cheers you, she is behind you, and she shares countless stories about countless, amazing friends who have died, come back to life or almost died and who now are living lives on mission, and she wants to help you to do the same -- to not miss it, or to bury the gifts God has given you because of fear. She lived that way for a while, but now she is “running hard toward God” and, incidentally, so is her husband, Zac, who wasn’t always on board with her pursuing her dreams. But now says he is.Chapter 21, “When Women Dream”, is where my former enthusiasm began to unravel. Framed a certain way, it seems possible to justify almost anything. Being away from your four children for extended periods of traveling and working is perfectly acceptable so long as you are doing it for the kingdom. Why should we have any less access to pursuing our dreams than our husbands do? After all, God gave us dreams and giftings too. This sounds eerily like a Christianized version of a worldly ideology. It made me feel like Jennie was using a very old, yet cleverly disguised strategy: “God didn’t really say…” Why else would she basically say it was okay for her to charge full speed ahead in her career (with what she feels is God’s approval, of course), candidly admit that sometimes her husband feels “eclipsed” and that she often absent in the home (to the extent that she gets help from sitters, cleaners and administrative assistance) with absolutely no reference to Titus 2:5 whatsoever?I am also concerned that what is being further eclipsed here is the matter of daily, ordinary, unsung faithfulness. Attention to the common, boring, monotonous, unremarkable with remarkable regularity, devotion, a daily (often moment-by-moment) dying to self for the sake of others -- not for praise we may receive presently, nor the thrill or sudden “rush” of knowing we are walking in our “purpose”, but out of sincere devotion to Christ and out of our love for Him. I am concerned that women reading this book will think their purpose “out there” somewhere -- something they must leave to do or look for somewhere else. Often what is required of us is right beneath our noses, but fails to look appealing, because we are fickle mortals and our ‘restless’ feelings are often still just feelings, and we should be wise in how we respond to them, interpret them, and where we allow them to lead us.I also believe that simple discontentment is a far greater issue that people in general, and women in particular, grapple with. We Christians are not exempt from the inner tuggings that tell us we deserve more, were meant for more (than this) and that it's our God-given "right" to pursue more. We needn't even leave the church to find support for this sort of belief system. It is a far greater challenge, indeed, to embrace contentment with what God has apportioned us, and to do so will always be swimming against the current in today's culture.I realize it is often difficult to be discerning with so many well-meaning Christian books coming at us, with a thousand different voices about what is right or what is advisable. The Holy Spirit and God’s immutable Word must ultimately lead us in the right direction. It seems to me that the vast majority of women live ordinary lives where they can and should use the gifts God has given them. But how and when they use those gifts is a matter of great discernment that should be made with much prayer, counsel and adherence to God’s Word.

As others have indicated, this is a thought-provoking book that you need to take your time with. However, I wish I had been warned not to buy the Kindle edition. A large portion of this book involves reflection and journaling, and there are charts and diagrams within the book where you are supposed to write. These are not replicated well in the Kindle edition, so even if you try to complete the information in your personal journal, it's hard to know what the diagrams look like.

I had been wrestling with the idea that God was moving me into another season but struggled with really accepting that and all that would accompany a shift. This book was the perfect encouragement I needed to finally take the step of faith that God had been calling me to do. I normally breeze over "exercises" in books but not this time. I found the journaling exercises at the end of each chapter extremely helpful and I was honestly surprised at what they revealed to me. If you are at a point in your life where you know you were meant for more, please read this book! It will be the catalyst for change in your life!

I received the "Restless DVD Bible Study" by Jennie Allen, complimentary from the gracious team at BookSneeze. I in turn agreed to write this review. Well, I can tell you that it is my joy to write this review as I was anticipating receiving this study since I found out Jennie completed it. I was introduced to Jennie Allen a few years ago when she released her first bible study, "Stuck" (AMAZING STUDY), and I have been able to read and complete her following books and bible studies. Jennie's "Restless" study is based on the life of Joseph from the Bible, and she leads participants through a practical plan to identify the "threads" of their lives. Jennie hopes that through the study women (and men) will find out how to weave those "threads" together for God and His glory and purposes. Some of the topics that are covered during the 8 week study are; God's story, gifts, suffering, people and passions. The format of this study is different from Jennie's last two studies as she is teaching before a live audience, and some of her friends share their stories on the DVD. I have loved her last two studies so it is hard for me to say that this one is better, but I can say it is just as good and the messages Jennie teach are powerful and life changing. I really truly believe that if a person lets God lead her through this study her life could be changed forevermore. I believe Jennie has been gifted by God, and she is one of the voices of our generation that is calling people back to God. She is passionate for people to know Jesus and experience a relationship with Him that is life changing. She is true to the "Gospel" message and she will tell you the truth even when it is hard. Jennie has stated that her heart is to equip and unleash the followers of Jesus to live and love Him and others. I understand that there are those that may read this review that don't have a relationship with God and maybe curious as to what all of this "talk" is about. Although this study is geared toward the follower of Jesus, I believe it could be used to introduce someone to what God's Story is all about. I am sure it is clear from my review, but I highly recommend this study by Jennie Allen and I cannot wait to read the paperback book when it releases.
