From Booklist
Greg Heffley’s eighth adventure (but who’s counting?) centers on his relationship with his best friend, Rowley—more specifically, the demise of that relationship when Rowley gets a girlfriend. At first, Greg tries to insert himself into the mix, but he soon tires of Abigail’s pathological control (she changes Rowley’s hairstyle) and fussy propriety (she won’t let him eat off of the cafeteria floor). And so Greg must navigate the minefield of middle school, with its hero points, dollar-store sneakers, and the looming shadow of summer school, all by himself. Without a sidekick, Greg spends more time at home, suffering the attentions of his “colorful†extended family, like Aunt Audra, who drags him along to a psychic visit. Greg begins consulting Rodrick’s forgotten Magic 8 Ball and thinks maybe that will turn his luck around. As ever, Kinney strikes his comic target in the bull’s-eye, exaggerating the trials of adolescence just enough to make them real while deftly exposing the insecurities behind Greg’s bravado with his super, simple drawings. Will Greg and Rowley make up? Either way, devotees need not worry; there is plenty more angst in store. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Kinney’s books are best-sellers on every list out there, and his rabid fans will be chomping at the bit to get another taste of the Wimpy Kid. Grades 5-8. --Thom Barthelmess

Once you start this series, you know you have to read each new one! And you know I am waaay to old for this stuff, but it is funny and it brings back some great middle school memories. I guess I am not alone judging from the number of reviews already out for a book released less than a week ago. Pretty quick read as usual and this was one of the funnier ones. When does #9 come out? And no, don't want to hear comments that this is the last one - inside page says COMING SOON - More Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
All of these books have what would be considered slightly gross stuff in it. Fortunately that was enough to get my two oldest kids hooked.I'd rarely been able to get oldest to read anything, then as these came out he could hardly wait for them to arrive. It also got him interested in reading other books that were similar. He read these books long after they became too easy for him.My second kid had all 8 of these available when he got to the point of not wanting to read, and it only took book 1 to get him hooked. While he doesn't read these any more, he does love manga. So I'm very grateful for these books to spur his interest in reading.
This is an accelerated reader (AR) book - reading level 5.5 - AR Pts: 3.0Greg's best friend, Rowley, has ditched him, and finding new friends in middle school is proving to be a tough task. Will a roll of the dice turn things around, or is Greg's life destined to be just another hard-luck story? Read to find out!My son bought 3 books with his own birthday money and this was one of them (they were all Wimpy Kid Books)! He's a big Wimpy Kid fan and he was excited to get his hands on this one. A funny book, hard to put down and a very good series. Another Good Book in the Series!
It was pretty much similar to all the other books. It's not one of those books that you get hooked to, and can't wait for the movie to come out like the Hunger Games series and the Divergent series. But its better for younger kids around 3rd grade or so. Maybe older kids might read it just for fun or if they're bored or something like that. But I kinda think the author is running out of ideas since this is the 8th book and all. It doesn't have very much suspense, though. And, that's the biggest thing I look forward to into a book. So, if you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, I think this might be okay to read. Thank you for reading my opinion of this book.
There's something quite extraordinary about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books. I tutor a lot of kids, ranging from grades K-12, and so many of these kids, especially the ones in Grades 2-8 love this series, and that is special indeed. My 8.5-year-old daughter is a great fan too, and after reading several of the books including this latest in the series, I can see what all the fuss is about. The stories of Greg Heffley and his misadventures with his friends as they go through their school years make for fun and engaging reading, and the author's blend of satire and cartoon drawings makes this something that can be enjoyed by both younger children, adolescents, and even adults. True, Greg Heffley is not always the most sympathetic of characters, but even with all his flaws, there's an undefinable quality about this kid that just sucks you right into whatever drama he's experiencing. In "Hard Luck", Greg is placed in a quandary when his best friend Rowley ditches him. Who is to be Greg's new best friend? Finding a best friend in middle school is not going to be easy and when Greg decides to leave it to luck, well, things start happening Wimpy Kid style! A fun and entertaining read!
We loved this series and added this book to our collection as a replacement (my son lent his copy to someone at camp and never got it back). If you have a hard time getting your kid to read, then go ahead and get this Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Its funny and clever. The author is spot on with his humor. You will love it, even with a kid around.
My 6 year old son began reading "Wimpy Kid" books just as he was learning to read. Many times I would allow him to read before bed and would hear him laughing hysterically in his room. Now, 7 years old, he has read all of them and often will pick them up and read them again. They are silly, but the appeal to his age demographic was actually amazing to me. I didn't have to make him read... he wanted to read. And he loved them all. I would recommend the entire series to any parent of a child who is learning and becoming comfortable with reading comprehension.
Greg and Rowley usually get into arguments a lot in the books then they come back to being best friends again. Well it's good that they've stopped that from the Long Haul to the Meltdown. (At least for now)
My 11-year-old is not a reader but the Wimpy Kid books are my go-to. He reads all of them a couple of times but this is the first time he's ever read one three times (and counting) in rapid succession. As soon as he finishes it, he starts it again! He said it's his favorite book of all the Wimpy Kid books because the story is less general than the rest. I may have to buy him a new copy before the year's out, and I don't mind as long as he's READING!
