City in Shadow is no exception... it keeps you guessing until the very last moment.. and just when you think you've figured it all out... you don't ! ... always keeps you guessing... and keeps you up late wanting to finish it! I love this entire series of books! EXCELLENT!!
'City in Shadow' Delivers Quirky, Rapid-Fire Big Apple Mystery EntertainmentEvan Marshall's "City in Shadow" (Severn House Publishers, 192 pages, $27.95), the latest in his Hidden Manhattan Mystery series, features an amateur detective with the probably the most unusual day job in fiction, Anna Winthrop, a Department of Sanitation supervisor.Anna's the daughter of a billionaire Connecticut businessman who's appalled at her choice of careers, especially since her siblings are a lawyer, a doctor and a stockbroker. Anna was a debutante who gave it all up to join the Sanitation Department on an entry-level basis -- although the reader can suspend disbelief long enough to realize that few garbage collectors have the financial resources to call in sick and fly down to Florida, as Anna does in "City in Shadow."The latest in a series ("Death Is Disposable," "Evil Justice," "Dark Alley," ) that gets its name from Marshall's placing his characters in a relatively unknown, unusual architectural treasure in Manhattan, "City In Shadow" includes a number of plots and subplots in a relatively short book. The main plot has Anna investigating a sex trafficking ring that comes to her attention when a frightened woman in a pickup truck leaves a note reading "HELP ME" outside Anna's Hell's Kitchen apartment on W. 43rd Street between Ninth and Tenth avenues. The truck is there to convey an antique desk Anna has sold to two Slavic looking men and their passenger -- a beautiful Eastern European women being taken to Little Odessa, Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Anna's upstairs neighbor Nettie Clouchet, a free-lance journalist and blogger, knows Ukrainian because of her ex-boyfriend, Eddie Pushkar, a Ukrainian-American cop.Anna has a NYPD cop boyfriend, too, Santos Reyes, who tries to dissuade her from playing detective, in vain, of course. Anna and Nettie pose as maids from a temp service to get inside a luxury Times Square apartment building that plays a big role in the sex-trafficking scheme.Another plot has Anna's visiting cousin from Cincinnati, Patti, prowling the streets of Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, the gentrifying area where Anna lives and works."City in Shadow" has plenty of action and character development, plus the bonus of the Manhattan Mystery architectural locale, this time inside Grand Central Terminal.
I love New York! I know that sounds like the oft-run ad from awhile ago, but I can't help it - it's the truth. And books that are set in and around that city naturally catch my attention. So it was with City in Shadow by Evan Marshall, a novel that is part of the Hidden Mysteries series. This is the first book that I've read by this author and I don't believe it's necessary to read the other books in the series first to be able to enjoy this one.The story begins with Anna Winthrop, a sanitation department worker, witnessing what she thinks may be a woman being held against her will. Anna follows the trail of this woman to a mysterious building on 42nd Street. Meanwhile, Anna's upstairs neighbour, Nettie, also sees the young woman and starts her own investigation. Both women encounter plenty of obstacles, sinister characters and danger in their quest to find out the truth. This novel had several elements to it that stood out. First, it was written a bit like a noir thriller/hard-boiled detective novel. That genre pairs well with the New York setting (as does the plot) but the book also had a cozy mystery feel to it. The characters' backgrounds were divulged, neighbours got to know neighbours (even if they were bad neighbours) and the way the characters zipped around the city and bumped into people just gave me a 'small town' sort of feeling. It was an interesting mix and I liked it.I found the writing somewhat choppy at times and it could've used a bit more editing. I didn't always need to know how beautiful or handsome someone was and I felt those descriptions were somewhat clichéd.Despite those flaws, I think this would be a great series for those who haven't read a mystery before. It would also be very appealing for young adults new to the genre. And of course anyone who loves books set in New York!
Recent Cincinnati high school graduate Patti Fairchild is coming to Manhattan to spend time with her older second cousin sanitation garage supervisor Anna Winthrop. Patti has not made any plans for her future so Anna is excited with her relative's visit. At the same time that Patti is due in town, Anna's edgy neighbor Nettie Clouchet, the "ghost blogger" is investigating Winthop for a section in her new book on local women of achievement. To make space for her cuz in her small apartment, Anna sells a desk to Ukrainian Grigori Sidorov. Inside Grigori's truck sits a pretty woman who drops a note onto the sidewalk while the desk is loaded. Anna picks up the message, which pleads: "help me". She gets her boyfriend, NYPD police officer Santos Reyes, who agrees the woman, may be in trouble and they should not ignore that possibility. Nervous Nettie can't either as a journalist. None of them nor Patti who wanders the avenues at night know yet that their separate inquiries involve trafficking as the Kirkmore Apartments is where Death Is Disposable. The fourth Hidden Manhattan mystery (see Dark Alley) is a gripping urban mystery in which the four "sleuths" learn where all avenues ends, but may be too late by the time they figure out the horror they investigate. Fast-paced, readers will want to journey the streets of Manhattan along side their tour guides as mean is too soft of a descriptor. This is all lights-on after reading thriller.Harriet Klausner
