While the book features teen characters the story line and action is typical Peretti. I loved it and will go and read the other "young adult" stories.

Each Frank Peretti book always reminds us of how much Jesus loves us. This book is a page turner and the plot is mysterious. It is a book and message for all ages. I wish everyone would read this book!!!

I read this book back in middle school and reading it again as I finish high school brings back some awe some revelations that are easy to forget. We need to be kind to people and ever on our guard. Pain and suffering is all around and it is never the time to look the other way or condone it for happening. There's always something we can do to stop it. There needs to be a hero for every pack of bullies and why shouldn't it be you or me.The suspense will keep you reading more and the loving message should be kept with you. I know I won't be forgetting it again.

However, the progress has been slow and the deluge of genome sequence data has been a tough problem to handle.But, Svante Paabo in this fascinating book on the 'Neanderthal Man' shows how the new technologies have enabled him to sequence the genomes of our extinct relatives - the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. The data proves how our ancestors moved out of Africa about 50,000 years back and interbred to a small extent (2 to 7% of our genes come from them) with the Neanderthals and Denisovans and maybe drove them to extinction. Many interesting facts come out of these studies such as, (a) that gene flow seems to have been from the Neanderthals to us (and not the other way), (b) the founding population of the Neanderthals also seems to have pretty small like in the case of the humans (c) we split from the Neanderthals about 500,000 years back (d) the Denisovans split about 1 million years back (e) the Denisovans seem to be closer to the Neanderthals than to humans, and much more...The book is not only fun to read, but Paabo's detective mode of story telling will also keep the reader focused. By mixing his personal stories with scientific research, Paabo provides a refreshing frankness to the narrative. We get a direct view of the challenges in scientific research and how the role of institutional support and adequate funding can make research a success. Paabo's journey from Egyptian mummies to Mammoths, to Sloths and finally the Neanderthals and Denisovans is a great inspiration to all students of science. He shows how passion, perseverance, attention to detail, and collaboration can deliver results not only in Science but in all aspects of life.Paabo explains the Science very clearly and the narrative shows us how he has become the world's expert in 'ancient DNA'. But in order to do that he often has to go into intricate details of lab work which some readers might find difficult to follow. The Neanderthal Man, by Svante, is a compelling recount by a principal in the discovery of genes of the Neanderthals. It starts with the interest in recovering DNA from old sources, and in this case some liver bought at the local market and then desiccated in an oven at 50C. The tale spans over some twenty years, with diversions typical of science, and ultimately ends with the publishing of some of the most interesting results in understanding man and his evolution.Svante is an exceptionally good writer and the tale flows quite smoothly. If one understands the science, then one can fill in the gaps and the tales is well presented. If one does not understand the science then one can still appreciate what is happening by taking the results presented at face value.The tale works back and forth from the fundamental science to the interrelationships between various players in the overall search. Svante shows how he managed to deal with the anthropologists and others to get samples of Neanderthals from as far away as Siberia. It also demonstrates some of the more cooperative nature of science as new techniques is shared and how Svante is assisted by many others who are but in related fields.The efforts span from California to Eastern Russia and it shows that in today's environment the ability to communicate changed what would have been multi-lifetime efforts into a fast paced move to provide the final answers.This book is a stark contrast to Watson's Double Helix. The Helix is a strong interplay of personalities; it portrays competitiveness and at times pettiness that is common in certain scientific endeavors. Helix was a true race, a sprint to get DNA right, and a succinct set of observations which became the underpinnings of Svante's efforts. Svante is the opposite of Watson. The ego is missing; the collegiality if present, yet one still sense the pace. Yet it is not a pace with an edge, it is a steady pace to get it right.This is definitely a great book for those seeking to understand the Neanderthal developments as well as understanding perhaps how the research community has matured as it has expanded.Also, upon some reflection, I recall when I first read Watson's Double Helix just after it was published I could recognize the highly competitive world of research since I was still at MIT. Another wonderful book by Sarah Schulman! On the surface it's a gripping detective novel, but I enjoyed all the layers beneath as well. Schulman transported me there, to the streets of New York and into the souls of her fascinating characters and how their lives intersect. With the beauty of her prose like "a monologue long enough for every person in the theater to work through a problem they had been putting off indefinitely," Schulman's latest novel is a another welcome addition to her humane body of work.

I thought I was buying a mystery. What I received is a story of a depressed and insecure woman in early sobriety. Lengthy, unnecessary descriptions of events and things that have nothing to do with the story. I’m in AA and this was too much, even for me. Didn’t finish the book. Save your money.

I completely disagree with the person that didn’t like the book.This book is touching, very knowledgable about addiction, and a fascinating personality study. It’s very funny and very sad at the same time. Wonderful and ultimately hopeful book.

Her fiction and non-fiction continue to be pitiful and downright annoying. I don't mind a book having a political agenda especially at this moment in history. But, oh god, do we have to go through yet another mean, self-pitying, stunted diatribe from the bog of Schulman's lazy psyche. The answer is no! Steer clear - she will not evolve if she has not by now - it is simply beyond her and her writing suffers, as does anyone who reads it.

Totally enjoyed this clever, timely police procedural. Loved the politics, but even more so, the protagonist Maggie Terry who struggles to be a human being in the world, while staying drug & alcohol free. No simple good guys here, plus great insight into current NYC.

I did not finish this book. I am absolutely infuriated that there was so much politicizing immediately in this book. I thought I was buying a mystery and instead I find myself reading comments on the president...”the angry orange”...etc etc. I am appalled at this covert and insidious nonsense. I have a PhD myself and at least want to know when a mystery has some kind of political agenda.I intend to get my money back.and insist that amazon disclose when a mystery has an undisclosed political agenda....Is there no escape from this nonsense??? I would give no stars if i could!

I like Schulman's novels, but wasn't sure about this one because I don't read anybody's detective novels. They never seems worth the effort. In Maggie Terry, we get to know a woman who makes mistakes, and we stand with her as she consciously makes more of them. We get to know someone who's trying to stay sane and present when "the president was insane." And from that first line, you know that this novel is political: it's about power, who has it, and who needs it. Also: it's hilarious.

This was hard to put down. I have my issues with it, but mostly about little, subjective things that Schulman passes judgement on (one particular comment about weight, and stereo gear) that are unimportant to this amazing study of early sobriety, the desperate attempt to live in the world again, and soul-crushing injustice. The mystery part of it was merely a plot structure to support this study--and IMO, not entirely successfully, but she does manage to intertwine the two in parts. I can understand why someone who wants a full-on detective mystery might be disappointed in that regard. But if you know anything about Schulman, you know that the political always plays a central role in her books, whether it's a light and accurately reflective comment about Trump that millions of New Yorkers regularly make, or a deeper reflection on the power dynamics of race, gender, class, sexualities, etc. I expect that from her and would be otherwise let down. If anything, I think it's a failure of other detective novels when they make slyer, underhanded comments in those areas that fly under the radar, or simply make no note of the highly political societies we live in at all. Schulman is far more realistic that most writers of any genre out there today, and while you can disagree with her positions or have trouble with her sometimes-relentless writing, she is always both an entertaining and highly thoughtful read.

Love all of the great photos of the different sitcom shows' rooms of each house/ apartment. There are a few item that I would like to find for my own home. If you like the oldies sitcom you will love this book.

I always enjoyed when Entertainment Weekly would go behind the scenes of a popular show and call out the details of its set -- the books and knickknacks on the shelves, the pictures on the fridge, the paintings on the walls. Here we have an entire book of close-up looks at sitcom sets from the last 40+ years. It's a fascinating, guilt-free trip inside your favorite homes. I could do without the decorating tips, but the backstage trivia makes for a fun read.

Great coffee table book. Many take it upon themselves to open it as the cover is very intriguing.

I absolutely love this book!! If you are a TV fanatic like me you will like this book too. It shows you different sitcom homes and the decor and talks about how they are decorated and gives you pointers if you want to decorate the same way.

Sitcom Style provides an in-depth look at the process, styles and techniques utilized by set designers to make the unknown television character immediately familiar to the television audience. The book strikes a perfect balance between trivia on some of the most famous pieces of furniture ever seen on television, such as Archie Bunker's chair, and close ups of the actual technical diagrams used by television producers.Ms. Friedman's lucid explanations on the relationship between a television character's projected personality and a set designers choice of furniture and layout, provides valuable insight into the design of any living space. Detailed deconstructions of various sets, such as the open layout of Frasier's sophisticated living room or the use of a club chair to project the assured confidence of Murphy Brown, end up being valuable guides in how to project your own sense of character in your personal living space. The inclusion of a buying guide at the end of the book with accompanying websites and phone numbers is helpful as well.While the book already does a great job of providing decorative insight along with television history, one would hope the author would do another book with even more home decoration tips. My only detraction would be the failure to examine some of the more popular canine abodes on television.Strongly suggested as a holiday gift to anyone who enjoys television history and trivia, home decoration and style, or both!

This book was well stocked with information on not only how these imaginative places were decorated but also where to purchase them in reality. I have sometimes saw an item on TV and wondered where it could be found and this book tells you. It is definately a read more than once book. I thouroughly enjoyed this book.

This book provides a ton of images from the sets of our favorite sitcoms. I was surprised to find some of the sets from shows I'd completely forgotten about (Murphy Brown) that had gorgeous sets.My one complaint would be that some of the articles reference items on the set that aren't pictured. The Will & Grace designer refers to a painting that isn't shown in the book, but is featured on the set.That aside--this is a great buy. I keep it on my coffee table by the remotes as a conversation piece.
