This book was the basis for the acclaimed TV miniseries, which I haven’t seen. I did watch enough snippets to grasp the overall story. But, I believe this book provided more depth.The book presents the short and eventful existence of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne. It starts with the group’s rigorous training in Georgia, where the harsh discipline shaped an indestructible camaraderie. The story continues with the group’s relocation to England, and its D-Day parachuting into Normandy. E Company’s exploits mirrored the Allies’ major European battles, including Market-Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. It seems extraordinary that one group should thread through these events, but perhaps because the group, itself, was extraordinary.The book winds down with E Company’s trek to the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s mountain retreat near Berchtesgaden, followed by their occupation duty in Austria and return to the United States. The book concludes with an update on the members’ lives, and their recollections.Ambrose compiled this story by interviewing E Company members. It also was revealed that they mostly kept in touch. Although their lives had diverged, they continued to be bound by their shared wartime experience.I have previously read about these events, but no other accounts of these actions seemed as vivid as Ambrose’s. Using his interviews, he has fashioned a narrative supported with first-person detail that places the reader right on the scene. In fact, I recently glimpsed some clips from the TV series. I don’t feel I’ve missed much.

I like reading Stephen Ambrose's books; however, I found this one a bit self-indulgent, as fully 20%-25% of it detailed his own personal relationships. One chapter covered his brothers; another chapter covered his friends, a third chapter covered his former students, and the final chapter covered his father. I don't begrudge him doing this, BUT, more chapters detailing other friendships should have been included. The friendships wouldn't have needed to be between famous people, either. Why not focus on combat vets and their friendships, although one chapter was devoted to Easy Company.

One of America's greatest strengths has been, and is, its citizen soldiers - the ones called upon in time of military crisis to defend and defeat, who do the job, and then return to their private lives. BAND OF BROTHERS is a tribute to these individuals in general and, in particular, to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.The book begins with Company E's formation in July 1942, and ends with its inactivation on November 30, 1945. It's a narrative history based on letters, diaries, news clippings and personal interviews. It spans the company's training in the United States and England, its combat roles in the D-Day invasion, the subsequent Operation Market Garden, and the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and ends with the capture of Hitler's Alpine retreat, Berchtesgaden, and the last months as an occupying force in Austria. There's a stark contrast between Company E's sojourn in the Hell of battle and its occupation duty, the latter characterized by author Stephen Ambrose as a "soldier's dream life" of "mountain weather, unlimited sports, women and booze, easy duty, (and) good hunting".Company E's full complement was 140 men - 8 officers and 132 enlisted. But, as casualties mounted, original members were replaced with new, and the cast of characters is large. At times, BAND OF BROTHERS is more a series of vividly drawn vignettes featuring named individuals in the context of a particular combat operation. The reader never really gets to "know" any one soldier, with the exception of perhaps Dick Winters, who provides a continuity of sorts. Winters began as a 2nd Lieutenant commanding a platoon, and ended the war as a Major commanding the 2nd Battalion. To the degree that the author allows, Winters is the foremost hero of a group of heroes, i.e. all of E Company. The reader is thus forced to identify with the unit as a whole throughout its travails and final triumph. This was the author's intent, and is the book's ultimate strength. In the paperback edition, there are only eight pages of photographs and two of maps. One wishes for more. The last chapter on post-war careers is a nice, and logically necessary, touch.Most war-centered works of non-fiction focus on the "great commanders" - Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Nelson, Washington, Lee, Grant, Rommel, Montgomery, Eisenhower, Patton, MacArthur, etc. BAND OF BROTHERS is the best book I can recall on the experiences of the common soldier - the guy in the front trench whose only reward at the end of hostilities, if he lives, is a wound or two, a souvenir enemy pistol or flag, and the greatest of all, a feeling of comradeship with his fellows that lasts for life. This last almost makes war seem worth it.Currahee!

I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth analysis of _The Big Sleep_. The notes dissect the themes, imagery, and background of Chandler's most famous novel. Additionally, it reveals Chandler's strategy of "cannibalizing" scenes from previously published stories to build TBS. As an added bonus, the notes compare and contrast the novel with the film.As the book's cover blurb recommends, if you haven't read TBS, you can read through without the notes. If you have read it, the notes will deepen your appreciation and understanding of the story.Reading this w/the annotations was pure pleasure.

I've read TBS previously in three different editions. The wonderful annotations make this edition the best. They put the reader in the 1930'3 LA scene of corruption with sharp observations that compliment Chandler's incomparable hard-boiled prose. However, the best line in the book - indeed, the best line in all of hard-boiled literature - doesn't get a comment. Here's the line: "Dead men are heavier than broken hearts." Critics generally find that the hard-boiled manner in telling a story began with Hemingway and Hammett. This edition makes plain that such a method started right here with The Big Sleep.

Excellent addition to my library. I will chew on it slowly, and enjoy it. Could I have some more please! Thank you. "The General spoke again, slowly using his strength as carefully as an out-of-work showgirl uses her last good pair of stockings."

If you love Raymond Chandler and have read everything, both fiction and non-fiction, that is available, biographies, letters, everything, and have reconciled yourself to the failures of all those would-be Marlowe updaters to hit the mark ("New! A Philip Marlowe novel by the latest bandwagon rider!") (let's face it, Chandler died and he's not coming back) then this annotated edition is a gold mine. Each note is as tasty as the prose it illuminates and the only criticism is, why stop now? You've got more to do, people. Get on to the rest of the canon. The only negative is, the book ended and I wanted to stay immersed in a world that no longer lives except in our imaginations. (But then, that's all the worlds we think we inhabit, isn't it?)

I've read THE BIG SLEEP three or four times already, of course, but reading it this way -- with notes and supplemental materials on the right-hand page facing the text on the left-hand page -- made it feel so fresh it was almost new to me. If you love American crime fiction, you will never have more fun reading it than with this annotated version of THE BIG SLEEP. It's utterly mesmerizing stuff.

If you are a Chandler fan (and I am) then this Annotated version of "The Big Sleep" is a must read.I read it slowly over a month to savor it. I have read the book several times and seen the movie version with Humphrey Bogart probably 20 times. The annotations are drawn from the author's own letters, essays, and of course his other works, in particular the short stories that he cannibalized (Killer in the Rain, The Curtain) to form the novel, The Big Sleep. Comparisons to other authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald, Robert B Parker, James Cain, Conan Doyle, etc as well as Romantic Poets (Chandler was educated in England and loved the Romantic Poets and playwrights hence the name Marlowe for his famous detective), and non-fiction works like "The Hero of a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. We also get a comparison to historical Los Angeles and environs in the early to mid 20th century to get a full understanding of the time and place where the story takes place. It contains maps, newspaper articles, and pictures.

This is the book you need if you want to immerse yourself in the quintessential nor city of the 40s and 50s. And of course I do. I was there in the 40s, the 50s, and as an adult in the mid 60s. It's all gone now, but I remember.

About the Author

Wayne Erbsen has been fiddling around since 1970, when he bought a $25 fiddle for ten bucks. He has played and recorded with the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys from West Virginia and Smoketown Strut from Belgium. Wayne has won 1st place fiddle at several fiddlers conventions: Chilhowee, Virginia; Grayson County, Virginia; Mount Airy, North Carolina; and Fiddlers Grove, North Carolina. Well before this book I have been barking at the knot trying to learn some old time tunes on my own. A bit about myself, I am currently on the last pieces of Suzuki 1 studying with a wonderful teacher. I play Boehm flute, (alto recorder and traverso as well) a bit of guitar (not much ) and piano (intermediate). I went to school for music (voice major) and Violin is my newest instrument The reason I think the information about me is important is simply because I have been through a lot of music instructional books in my life and let me tell you this is best instructional book I have ever seen or have, for any instrument!!! If i find any other better than this I ll came back to this review and add an edit.I still sound sometimes like I forgot to grease the wagon but I can play all the daim songs in this book and just received it yesterday . All I need now is some neck oil for my husband so he'll sing 'em with me.Wayne Ersen after your book everything else is burro milk! Yeah.. I also got the cowboy songs one.

I wanted this book in the kindle version for 100% all the time portability, but was concerned that the songs tabs/notation would not be discernible or easily printed. I browsed almost all the reviews of this book to see how the kindle version fared without finding any! So I downloaded the free sample. Unfortunately there were no songs in the sample to make a determination. I decided to take a gamble on the kindle version for 9 dollars. Opened it up, flipped it to a song, and my suspicions were confirmed. The kindle version is useless. You can't enlarge the tabs for easy reading (listen I'm young, its not an eye thing, its a function of the books formatting) Though significantly cheaper than the spiral bound price, though you can tote it everywhere, it is not worth the purchase. I promptly returned it for a refund and will be purchasing the spiral bound, because the CONTENT of this book is FABULOUS!

My grandmother gave me this book for my birthday . This book is the absolute best, I would recommend it for any beginning fiddle player, I love how the book gives you tab and it also gives you the regular music and also tells you a little about how the song came to be it also gives you the lyrics without the music and up in the top right-hand corner it shows the chords that you will be needing to play the song also at the bottom it also shows a joke or maybe just a couple of tips and/or wisdom. It also comes with a CD. It also shows you how to play quarter eighth notes and half notes using words .I love how on the CD on some of them there's a slower track so you can play along with the CD. If you're playing a song in the upper right-hand corner it shows- the track number, first the regular speed and in the slower speed. I love this book and I would recommend it for any beginning fiddle player that is interested in playing old time fiddle tunes.

Okay, as a fiddler who reads and writes his own music I was perplexed upon opening this book -- what the heck, you call these songs? Simple children's melodies! Then I started droning, shuffling and singing along. Oh boy what a hoot! I love this book.So for fiddlers who read music and can play Irish tunes and what not, give it a go you won't regret it. The songs are simple, but when you throw in ornamentations and singing they take on their own life.My only critique is that there aren't enough lyrics. There is one play through of lyrics, but obviously (I think) there has to be a lot more versus.

I have played violin for 50 years and guitar for 40 years. I also have a master's degree in education (curriculum, instruction, and administration, but not music education.) When giving free guitar lessons in the past, the challenge was finding a resource that allowed the students to progress quickly and efficiently. I eventually found it easier to write my own book rather than use inefficient materials. When someone asked me recently to teach him to play violin/fiddle, I was reluctant to do so because I anticipated needing to write another book for the purpose. This book saved my precious time! It allows my student to teach himself, and I meet with him once a week to act as consultant and "cheerleader." I couldn't have developed a better resource--in fact, I doubt anyone could. I am quite sure it would be entirely possibly for a person to self-teach using this book with CD and perhaps supplementing with free youtube videos. Just search for "beginner fiddle lessons."

You can't learn Old Timey fiddle from anyone just anywhere. I first went to classical violin instructors who were clueless (even though they were in Asheville, NC). I tried to pick it up from recordings and YouTubes, but got completely frustrated. Yup, I had almost given up hope entirely, till I found this book. "Old Time Fiddle for the Complete Ignoramus" immediately became the Old Timey Rosetta Stone I had been longing for. The author is clearly intimately acquainted with Old Timey culture, so really knows of what he speaks. His lessons are easy to follow, contain just enough that's relevant about music theory and are colored by fascinating bits of history. Suffice it to say, his seasoned explanation of how to hold the instrument could not have been given by a classical violin instructor. If you want to ramp up from clueless about Old Time Fiddling to WATCH ME in a really short time - this is the book for you.

Loving this book so far! It has me laughing and playing the fiddle! I can't believe my progress! It's been perfect for me because I had never even picked up a fiddle before, and it tells you literally how to hold the instrument and the bow! I needed something that basic! I'm still working my way through the book (skipping around as songs seem interesting to me), but after 1.5 months I can't believe the progress I've made! I would highly recommend this book for that reason!

This is a great cute reference. I helps to speed up studying for the Hesi, because you can refer to it for the basics without having to take notes on them. It is not to be used alone to study though, you will need to use other tools, I recommend Readyforthehesi guides.

I was expecting something a little more balance for a general reader. Instead the book is an odd cluster of items that interest the writer, without a clear integration of his themes.

As a lover of world languages I embrace all things Basque, and would love to immerse myself in a Basque language course as I did with Finnish, Romansch and Breton. I studied each of those three languages in locations where they are still spoken as everyday languages (although I admit finding Finnish courses in Finland was rather easy to arrange). If I ever study Basque it would have to be in Basque Country, or Euskal Herria. I would be in language heaven, yet after reading The Basque Country: A Cultural History by Paddy Woodworth, I would have a tough time deciding where to study: in the Basque Country of Spain or France? Woodworth makes attractive cases for both regions.Basque is a language isolate, and is the oldest language of Europe. How did the Basques settle and where did their language originate? I had to chuckle at the opening lines of chapter two:"The origins of the Basques, and of their language, Euskera, are at once enticingly mysterious and politically contested. This has been a complex combination, and at times a lethal one. A vacuum of hard evidence has sucked in a deal of lunacy."Woodworth didn't deal with any of the lunacy, but debunked claims of the language to Neolithic or Stone Age origins. Book chapters dealt with the frontón and pelota, gastronomy, music, fiestas, Basque politics and the ETA, and "The Basques on the Other Side of the Mountains" = the French Basques. Basque literature was one of my favourites among the fifteen chapters. Bernardo Atxaga, undoubtedly the most famous Basque author of international renown was cited throughout the book and more so of course in this chapter. I read Atxaga's Obabakoak before I started to write book reviews and I recall seeing a beat-up Basque edition at Schoenhof's during my last visit. Woodworth wrote about many more Basque authors whose names I have recorded for future interloan requests or Abebooks purchases.While a joy to read for those who love Basque culture, I found that my notes were dominated by references to check on-line for photos. Woodworth unfortunately only included a few black and white photos with the text, and dark ones at that. I don't have a cell phone to Google for photos as I read, so I had to wait till I got on-line to find out what some buildings and places looked like, such as the parish church of San Salvador in Geraria, which is described as:"...so much in the building, from the floor to the obscure complex of arches that makes up the roof, is tilted, uneven, askew. But the curious architectonics of the church are due to something much more deliberate, and much more radical, than awkward location and idiosyncratic workmanship. Move right around the building and you will often find elegant curves, but rarely be offered a straight line."The Basque Country wasn't the first book I had read about the Basques but it was, thankfully, the least sensational. The most striking observation I found wasn't about the Basque past, but rather the present. Woodworth, in exploring the shops that dot the French Biscay coast, lamented the kitschy nature of merchandise. Both the Spanish and French sides realize that Basqueness is marketable and a selling point for tourists who like a "Basque experience" in B&B's and at restaurants, yet in France the stores go overboard with tacky souvenirs. Granted, the French side of Basque Country encompasses the Biarritz beach resorts, yet the shopping experience must nonetheless be a disappointment. I wonder if Woodworth had the same impression that I had when I first visited Amsterdam: every fridge magnet in every souvenir store depicted either a marijuana spliff or a lady of the evening. It was an effort to find a magnet not associated with sex or drugs. When compared to the kitschy French side, Woodworth noted in Spain:"...you can scour the streets of the old part of Bilbao and only find a single shop selling Basque souvenirs. Even in that one shop, they take third place, after suitcases and belts in the window display."There were a couple grammatical errors in the text, most of them caused by missing words. However I did encounter the nonword empherality on p. 133, when Woodworth likely meant ephemerality. Woodworth included three pages of further reading resources, and I have already copied the titles by Basque authors.

This is a very interesting and well-written book. It has a lot of historical information that is helpful in understanding the Basque people. A significant part of the book is organized by region, and at that point it reads more like a travel guide. I preferred the thematic parts of the book. I was disappointed that basic questions I had about Basque culture were not answered.

Expansive, playful and brilliant, John Durahm Peters interweaves environment, infrastructure, technology and technique through their elemental roots to explore the framing of meaning making in the human mind. For ecopedagogists (who must focus on critical media literacy) and media ecologist and critical media theorists, he offers a pathway (a ship!) for navigating new ways of thinking and knowing which could inform our use of technique as a technological species in the anthropocene. A must read.

You have to get over Peters' writing style to appreciate the arguments made about elemental media. While this is a great read, it shows that Peters is definitely a white American male. Taking a look at his sources, you see a systematic exclusion of female or other thinkers who could have contributed or even strengthen some of the arguments made. While this is a new book, it's kind of outdated in terms of the conversation he throws back to: Heidegger, McLuhan, etc., when he might have included (although older) Haraway, Hayles, etc.

Very technical for a lay person. Didn't hold my interest.

This is a book worth reviewing. This is already a review, but since I'm still reading it's yet incomplete.
