O'Neil is adamant that there is no One True Way, although he stresses the importance of practice. He discusses story structure, characterization, script preparation, and other general writing topics. He also covers those more specific to comics writing such as miniseries, maxiseries, and continuity. O'Neil addresses the visual component of the art, the importance of page layout, and the relationship between the writer and the artist. He concludes with a short essay, "Writing Humor Comics," by Mark Evanier. The book is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white examples from various DC comics. In addition, the author includes many pages of scripts, which are usually juxtaposed with the finished page. He provides excellent advice and guidance for beginners. Although the examples focus on DC characters and stories, the content should have broad appeal. This is a nice balance to the many how-to-draw-comics books in most collections. I grew up reading comics, and as I entered into a writing career of my own I secretly held on to a dream that I might one day write for some of my favorite titles. I haven't achieved that particular goal (yet), but as I progress in my writing career I find that the story-building techniques in this book are useful no matter what I'm writing. Much of my work involves non-linear subplots and multiple characters and POVs, and there is no industry that understands that sort of story plotting better than the comics industry!I have both a physical copy and a digital copy of this book. I was so impressed, I bought the entire series, and have found even the volumes on artwork to be interesting and insightful. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to study and improve upon writing technique for serialized work. Absolutely a must-have for any writer's resource library.

Students of creative arts (cartooning, painting, woodcarving, writing, whatever) want two things out of a good textbook: Instruction on how to do the craft and examples of just what the completed craft is supposed to look like. In a book about writing for comics, for example, it's just as important to see what a finished script looks like as it is to read about how it's done. (In fact, for many students, that's all they want: Just show me what the thing is supposed to look like and I'll figure out the rest.)Denny O'Neil (I've never met the man, but I've been reading his work for so long, I feel that I've achieved nickname basis) has produced a rich textbook meeting both of those qualifications.For those who are more nuts-and-bolts-oriented (and I admit I'm in that group), O'Neil gets to the juicy stuff early in the book with his discussion of the differences between, and pros and cons of, the full-script and plot-first techniques. There are plenty of visual examples, juxtaposed with the finished comic pages.O'Neil, however doesn't skimp on the how-tos. He offers detailed sections on story structure, subplots, characterization and more. If he comes to an element that just can't be described in an instructional form (writing realistic dialogue, for instance), he explains why it cannot be taught and offers substantial suggestions for how the student can develop his or her own skills in the element.He also describes the various architectural forms within the comic world -- miniseries, maxiseries, graphic novels, ongoing series, adaptations, etc. -- and the structural differences and nuances of each.This is a fine, valuable instructional manual. Denny O'Neil gave us back Batman after those crazy camp years. Batman the way he is supposed to be... The Dark Knight!! If there is ANYONE to learn how to write a comic from it is this man. He is a legend in the comics industry for his style and this is how he did it. If I can ever get my story-line straight in head this book has given me the correct and most viable way to put it together on paper so that it will be a saleable manuscript.

Great starting point for anyone interested in the comic book process. I'm currently in the process of converting a story into a graphic novel and have found this book both informative and inspirational. Not a "one stop shop" for the comic book industry, but definitely one I'll open again and again.

Great for writers and those who aspire to write for comics. I write RPGs for several independent RPG companies. My kid is into comics and draws and aspires to create comics all the time. Why not get a guide to comic writing by Denny O'Neil the father of "serious Dark Batman" stories and see what insights can be gleaned? I also teach Graphic Design and previously bought the DC guide to Coloring and Lettering. I use the pertinent information from that volume to develop lesson plans because even at 10 years old it is still more up to date than most of the text books shoveled out by Adobe's Peach Pit Press.For example the lettering book comes with instructions on how to actually use Fontlab, which is something Fontlab doesn't even come with! The DC Comics Guides are a great series of books by LEGENDS in the comics field. I highly recommend them for students, teachers, and folks interested in breaking into comics.

For Rebecca, of how her priorities change, as she struggles with her lost and keeping the farm. Will the lost they both have in losing Malachi, be anything more. A heart warming story,of wanting to keep the family working and being together,and having their own place. Given my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Samantha Price out did it again with this book .It lets you ; that you need to be always truthful because if not it can turn against you one day please take your time as you read this story it will teach you about life. This book is very good. Tell all your friends about it and there are even more in this series to read. I have enjoyed all of her books an i will always when new ones come out.I also ask that when you read write a review an also send a message to the author leting her know what you thought of her books.

I enjoyed reading this story very much. Jeanie was strong character. Although she missed her late husband Malachi dhe was willing to do the necessary to support her family. In doing do she embraced Amos.

This is a good book. I recommend it. It's how a woman lost her first love. Thru the help of the good Lord she finds her new love. Thru all the hardships.

I found this story of a Amish widow's life after she lost her husband in a accident with a automobile to be a fascinating adventure. The author has done a wonderful job of telling her story.

This guide has been incredibly helpful in planning our vacation to Croatia. The guide is especially helpful for people who like outdoor activities - hiking, biking, walking tours, kayaking, etc. In addition to providing the reader with excellent recommendations for outdoor activities, the writer also provides details and descriptions of cultural experiences - touring museums and ruins as well as participating in local festivals. The guide has a fairly extensive list of recommended places to stay, eat, and visit for all types of budgets. The writer knows Croatia inside and out. Finally, the guide is very recent, so it is likely to have the most recent information available. Great buy!

The information is good but I do not care for the format of the book and to be honest I really expected more photos and visual aids from National Geographic. When comparing it to the DK guides, DK wins hands down for an easier to navigate travel guide

This publication is of nominal value for a visitor who wants to have the benefit of insights that allow them to prioritize their time. It is marvelous in terms of history but if you find yourself wondering into an interesting city and would like to know what the authors really think about the quality of a museum or a relic or, for that matter, the countryside, you can essentially kiss it off. All in all, if you buy this read it and leave it home after you take some notes because you will, in essence, be carrying dead weight.

Book has lots of good information, lovely photos , etc the reason I gave it 3 stars is because the print is very small and very light. Not easy to read for these aging eyes, especially without bright light

As a patient suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome for over 20 years, I have had to change my eating entirely. I would encourage anyone with this condition to look into "Grain Bowls" as a wonderful tool for clean eating. This book provides tips and tools for eating in a manner that supports and nurtures your body in a way that is very satisfying. Weight loss is a natural by-product of way your body uses natural fiber for nutrition. The flavors are wonderful and are natural and healthy.

Bought this after seeing it at a friends house and I love it. I have the Salads one, the Toast one and now this one. It's my favorite out of the three. The salmon avocado snap pea grain bowl is to die for. The best part about it is that the recipes in this book do not take very long to make.

Basically a good book, without some of the crazy ingredients I've seen in other such books. Basic grain cooking instructions along with good combinations and sauces to enhance things. The tuna with cannellini beans my favorite so far.

Really simple and easy to follow cookbook. I make 3 of the recipes a week to last 2-3 meals each. I like to throw in extra protein, like soft boiled eggs. The dressing recipes are simple and delicious.

I am currently going to a naturopath for cancer. I needed new recipes with the goal of staying away from any type of flour. This is a very nice book, love the pictures, easy to follow recipes and great ideas for healthy eating.

This quickly became one of my favorite cookbooks. And I have a lot of cookbooks. Very healthy and easy recipes.

This is such a nice, useful book that stretches to accommodate both the novice, who wants all the help he/she can get, to the advanced cook, who would always have these ingredients in their well-stocked kitchen. I love incorporating grains into my meals and these recipes offer great opportunity, some with beautifully complex flavors and some with simple, yet quality ingredients. I am especially looking forward to preparing several of these bowls in the fall and winter when I tend to lose my craving for lettuce salads.

What a fantastic book of easy to whip together, tasty recipies that you want to eat. Makes eating simple and joyful!

A little bit of background, so you can decide whether or not you care about my opinion on Girl Friends:I write this review from the perspective of an 18-year-old male who enjoys romance stories and, in particular, loves yuri/shoujo-ai for how pure and beautiful it is, rather than whatever pornographic value may be found in the material. Of course, the point of romance is to make the reader feel "all the feels," and for me yuri does this better than anything else.Now, to Girl Friends. Girl friends is a 35-chapter yuri manga divided into two very well-priced omnibuses on Amazon. I first read Girl Friends on a whim when I realized yuri was a legitimate genre several months ago, and I was absolutely blown away. I'll admit, I even cried a couple times the first time I read this series, the romance between Mari-chan and Akko is just so sweet and the little conflicts that arise build up to the climax of the series really well. I did a little poking around the internet to see if this series actually was as good as I thought it was, and I wasn't surprised to find that a lot of people consider this series to be the pinnacle of the yuri genre right now. Lastly, the art is also really good, it's very shoujo in style and very crisp and consistent. In particular, the hair in this series almost always looks amazing, big props to Morinaga there too.IN CONCLUSION: Girl Friends is a fantastic series. At this price, any yuri fan should pick up both volumes. When I saw it on Amazon at this price, I had to buy it. No way I could pass up owning such a good series. Even after multiple rereadings, this series still gives me all the great warm and fuzzies that I felt the first time I read it. Highly recommended!!NOTE: Readers should keep in mind that there is mild nudity in this series. It is not at all gratuitous, and it's definitely safe to read this series in public, but I just thought that since there is no warning or anything on this series that people should know.

*=After completionAnyone who can appreciate a good romance story will enjoy Girl Friends, even if they do not specifically love shoujo-ai/yuri.*This is the pinnacle of the genre, in yuri romance for slice of life manga. This is the masterpiece of its era and is likely not going to be dethroned from most highly rated and best critically received yuri for a long time.Most of my thoughts are unchanged. I am mostly just following up with the review to assure people that this is well worth it all the way to the end.Story:When it comes to school & slice of life manga, it often feels as if there is not much of a story, just a setting that you let characters loose in. What I can say is that unlike many shoujo-ai, Girl Friends takes a much more "true to life" approach, on the girl/ girl romance. The approach is fresh, interesting and helps the audience relate. The only complaint here is the amount of small talk involved can sometimes be too much.*Story is solid, my only nitpick is petty... I wished that there was more. It's usually the hallmark of a good story. (Unless there is a case of a rushed ending or unresolved plot lines) Might be a little spoiler-ish under, skip to art if you want nothing to do with it:In this case I would love to see Morinaga pick these characters back up some time for a sequel exploring their college life and coming out story.Art:The art is as good as what you would expect out of a, decent manga series. Morinaga Milk's art style and character designs are top notch.*I have to say that the art really remained very consistent all the way through to the end, and a few panels where the quality was buffed up for a dramatic moment. Over all I have to again compliment the artist very pretty character design, nice backdrops and everything inbetween.Characters:The main character Mari, is one of the most emotionally complicated (different from other means of making a complex character) and troubled character I have ever seen. Emotional complexity comes from trying to understand why you feel the way you do, it's feeling having a contradiction between the way you feel and the way you rationally think would be the best way to feel, it's questioning your own motivations and intentions in the interactions you have with others. To some it might seem melodramatic but, that is the essence of creating great internal struggle, which is relatable in multitude of different ways.The other characters are more, for the everyday interactions, kind of like a lucky star sort of thing but they are fun, unique, and amusing. At some point during the manga the main character changes to Akiko, the person of Mari's feelings. Akiko stood out quite a bit as an eccentric, but when the main focus becomes centered on her perspective she starts to come to life, as a well fleshed out character. Her time in the spotlight is just beginning but there is much hope for good things in the future.*I was right about Akko, she was awesome, as she was a much more confident character. That had to "catch up" to Mari in terms of figuring out her feelings for the sake of continuity, but once she did, Akko was much more sure of herself compared to Mari. She would made decisions on how she felt and stuck to them, as well didn't mind putting herself out to get to the truth. The character dynamic, by the end is the most satisfying romantic interaction that I have read.Enjoyment:Emotional drama and self-torment in a realistic setting is a very gripping read. This isn't something everyone enjoys but for the target audience, this series will be pure bliss. The small talk sections may be boring for some however, but it is forgivable. This manga will hook you in and have you honestly caring about its characters, which is a good measure to its enjoyment.Overall :If you are the type to enjoy the things mentioned above, you will love this, especially if you also have a love for shoujo-aiFan for life. I will read everything Morinaga, Milk makes for a long time just to hope that she can do something like this again.

Such nostalgia! I remember the complaints about Morinaga stretching out the plot ("Not another Tamamin chapter!"), the bitching about drama, and the joy of Mari and Akko finally getting their happy end. For however standard this is in the yuri genre, it's still a seminal work and really captures that whole "joy/drama of young love". It also, as I recall, was the beginning of yuri where the romance wasn't subtext AND has a happy end.You owe yourself to check this one out, no matter if you're new to the genre or a seasoned veteran.

I was thrilled when this came out. I read it online, so to own it was an honor. This is your typical cutesy schoolgirl yuri, written with taste. If I had to pick yuri manga that I read online to buy in print, this would be in the top 3. Definitely give it a shot!

I was first introduced to this manga series by reading the fan translation and was immediately hooked. The story is very sweet and I thought it was paced just right. Some people who are going into it looking for yuri right away will be turned off. The story takes its time to build upon the relationship between the two main characters, Akko and Mari. I really enjoyed how Morinaga gave us insight into the characters thoughts as they start out as just classmates to becoming best friends. Their character interactions have a very honest and genuine feeling which helps you care about them.If you can get past some of the more girly aspects in the story (which I had no issue with), I would highly recommend giving this story a try. The characters are well rounded and have a very good chemistry between them. The art is nice and fits the setting perfectly and most importantly, getting to see the developing friendship between Akko and Mari is truly wonderful. Definitely my favorite yuri manga series.

This is one of the best Yuri series out there. Milk takes you through the discovery of feelings, the fear of ruining a good relationship, the joy of feelings reciprocated and the future of the two post high school. A must have.
