Quite simply wonderful. I used this book to teach a course on Mesoamerica and found it accessible, informative, and the right balance between scholarly and engaging. Coffee table books tend to be overly vague and sweeping in their generalizations, recounting the same myths in a monolithic manner, without a sense of the changing nature of mythology and the present uses of them. Gonzalez provides excellent synthetic treatments of the role of mythology in Mesoamerican society as well as thorough thematic coverage of their gods and mythic stories. I highly recommend it.

Excellent transaction and product!

Read and Gonzalez have a lot of informative things to say about legends in Central America and its mixing with Christianity. They discuss important issues like the passing of time that can alter people's beliefs. The range of topics is extensive, and they handle them with a special talent. This is an important work with deep content but it is reader-friendly. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Aztec and Maya.

As an amateur archeologist I have interest in the ancient Maya, but this book let me down. Miller did a much better job with "An Illustrated Dictionary of the Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya" (which is cheaper). Many of the illustrations were poorly composed. On a positive note, it had some interesting syntheses.

.I loved Once We Were Brothers and did not think the author could top his first novel but he has with Saving Sophie. This is a fast paced book that has you jumping from Chicago to Hawaii and spending most of the novel in the middle east. The first book centered on good versus evil and this one takes evil a big step forward. I have a question? Why are there only 8 reviews prior to mine when the internet is filled with them?As you know Sophie is six year old child who loses her mother to an insidious disease that kills her quickly. Her father is grief stricken and Sophie and he are bonded by their love. The grandparents who live in Hebron which is a hotbed for terrorists kidnap the child and try and brain wash her into believing her parents did not love her. Jack, the tormented dad steals millions of dollars in his effort to pay off the evil grandfather and get his child back. You think Nazis are evil? You have not met the grandfather and his cronies. They take it even farther if possible. This book is less sentimental than the debut novel and keeps you riveted to the novel. Being a cynical New Yorker I thought nothing could shock me but the ending of this book blew my socks off! their are Russian baddies, American bad guys, and the worst-the mad tyrannical doctor who has hatched a plot to rid the Arab world of Jews with germ warfare but he takes it a step further than you thought possible. Liam and Catharine are back from the first book but you don't see too much of Catharine in this novel. There is a fast talking too brave for her own good spy who has her own agenda. NO spoilers. She spends a good part of the book with the Liam in the middle east to try and foil a plot to kill off thousands of Israelis but also to supposedly save Sophie. She is a loving little girl who adored her parents and is clinging to the hope that her daddy will come and get her while the psychotic terrorist grandfather keeps drumming into her mind that her father does not want her anymore. there was one bugaboo and that was all the history the author wrote into the book. As a Jew I was glad I now have a better knowledge of the birth of Israel and all that has happened since WWI-but-I think he could have cut the lesson short a tad. Once I made it through the novel took off like a rocket with more twists and turns than a roller coaster. their are evil Russians and Americans. Saving Sophie had me riveted right to the shocker of an ending. I love this author and was relieved he will have a third book coming out next year. I have to give Saving Sophie two big thumbs up. Warning: there is more violence here than in his previous tome. This is not for the faint hearted. Sit back....make some popcorn....and enjoy.

As Jack Sommers copes with the loss of his wife, he struggles to retake his daughter from kidnappers, his own in-laws, and becomes involved in an embezzlement scheme. Kayla Cummings, a spy operative intent on catching a particularly evil and determined group of men, works together with Taggart and Sommers to foil the terror plot and snatch the perpetrators.The novel advances quickly with relatively short chapters narrated by the different characters and moves from Chicago, to Hawaii, Israel and Hebron. The novel, infused with history of Israel, beginning with Abraham, and the history of the Israeli-Arab conflict, succeeds to avoid typical character stereotypes. However, both romantic relationships in the novel become somewhat melodramatic.

Loved Saving Sophie! Another great adventure for Liam Taggart & Catherine Lockhart. This book focused more on Private Eye Liam Taggart and was an exceptional read. I learned a lot about the history of Israel and the Middle East in this race to free Sophie and stop a full on terrorist attack. Very exciting, I loved the characters in this book including Jack Sommers, Marcy and Kayla. Favorite line: Racism will never win out. It's flawed in every sense because love is much stronger than hate. My new favorite Author tells a great tale. Looking forward to reading more of his work.I give Saving Sophie 5 stars for its great story.I would recommend this book to legal thriller fans. An

Mr. Kelsey is to receive 96 million dollars the next day after the disbursement!If that doesn’t peak your interest I’ll be surprised! I’ll add another location to really make you wonder...... Israel! Ronald Balson teaches much historical background in Saving Sofie, but those parts of the book become tedious. Much as I appreciated the significance, it had little bearing as the story unfolds. Regardless of the understanding of the Jewish - Israeli - Palestinian conflict, the characters continue to pursue their goals: saving Sofie and stopping a terrorist plot. There is a strong sense throughout the book that it will be a fairytale ending, yet I was compelled to read on and quite enjoyed the book. Characters are developed enough for the reader to care, and I am enough of a romantic to have been satisfied. Well done. I would definitely recommend albeit the long historical passages.

This work reflects 8 years of research and interviews with 53 chief privacy officers (CPOs) and 26 other stakeholders in the privacy realm. It provides rich lessons for regulators, policymakers, privacy advocates, and in particular, CPOs. The work is a must read for any CPO—chapter 9 is essentially a blueprint to set up a privacy structure within a company that will be successful.More broadly, this effort yields surprising results on what constitutes efficacious privacy protection. Traditionally, privacy advocates and regulators push for more detailed, comprehensive privacy rules. The authors find that such an approach disempowers pro-privacy forces within institutions, and leads to a compliance rather than a leadership mentality. But the message is not as simple as the US approach is better than others. This book deepens the understanding of regulatory approaches by studying privacy implementation in the UK, Germany, Spain, and France. The authors find that two very different systems—the US and Germany—have created the conditions for privacy leadership. Key to this is the idea that regulatory mandates in these countries are both ambiguous yet are enforceable, thus creating accountability; that privacy officers in the two countries have power, independence, and a consultative role with outside parties; that there is transparency in enforcement and in privacy failures (security breach notification); and that CPOs as a group have become a professional body. The duo concludes that regulatory efforts that “keep them (CPOs) on their toes” rather than displace them with compliance-oriented, detailed regulatory postures, are crucial to protection of privacy.

In it, they’ve interviewed numerous chief privacy officers (CPO), regulators, engineers and others in the United States, France, Germany, UK and Spain. If you know a CPO, this book should be on their wish list.Much of the book is spent comparing and contrasting how privacy is done in each of these countries. In addition, the authors show what best practices, regulations, and laws can be most effective.Data and personal privacy have long been important. With that rise of big data and its ensuing analytics, combined with IoT gathering key pieces of personal data; privacy in 2016 is an imperative.The goal of the authors with these interviews was to understand what privacy professionals did right and wrong, and create a set of best practices that the reader can implement.Bamberger is a professor at the Berkeley School of Law, while Mulligan is an associate professor in the School of Information and a co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, and as such, the book has a bit of an academic feel.A key point the book makes is that at the corporate level, privacy isn’t something that can be the responsibility of a single department or individual.
