Amazon.com Review

Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz

From Publishers Weekly

For first-time mothers-to-be, this candid, funny and very reassuring guide to pregnancy is just what the doctor ordered?or would if he/she knew about it. Iovine, who has had four babies and who seemingly has girlfriends with many more, believes that women learn the really valuable things about pregnancy from other women. Since too few women in today's mobile society have a close circle of experienced female friends to turn to, Iovine's sharing of her own and her friends' experiences and knowledge fills a genuine need for comforting, straightforward, non-euphemistic woman-talk. Without stepping on any medical toes, and in language that is neither technical nor cutesy, she tackles morning sickness, swollen breasts, exercises, stretch marks, sex during and after pregnancy, delivery and just about everything else, from maternity clothing to bladder behavior. Iovine anticipates every conceivable question, and her responses are warm, wise and witty. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

If I could give 0 Stars to this piece of trash I would do it! It’s the most horrible book I have read in my entire life. I couldn’t even finish it. It’s so discouraging that I wanted to cry every chapter and it just put me in a really bad mood! It told me I would get fat basically just by breathing and I will look horrible during pregnancy! also it mentioned that exercise was worthless! Omg idk but this is all the opposite to my entire pregnancy, I haven’t become fat, I really love and enjoy exercise because it really really helps me to feel better and I don’t look horrible at all. I was so worried that pregnancy would be something scary because of this awful book! I understand there is morning sickness and of course you gain weight but this author makes it look like pregnancy is gonna be the most horrible period of your life. Horrible book and very discouraging. I do not recommend this to anyone!

This book is a horrible pregnancy book. It isn't based on any sort of factual, medical data, but basically one lady and her girlfriends thoughts on pregnancy. Much of the information in the book is factually incorrect. For example, she states that you shouldn't exercise during pregnancy because it has "no benefits". This is absolutely not true. Research has shown that exercise in healthy pregnancy women leads to healthier birth weights and better labor. Another blatant, and honestly unsafe statement she makes is to practice kegels by stopping your flow of urine. I asked my doctor about this and she actually that I shouldn't do this because it can lead to a UTI. Please DO NOT buy this book!!!!!

I absolutely love this book. It was so refreshing to read something that was less serious but still have found that everything I’ve read in the book has been spot on with my experience. It’s nice to find reading on pregnancy that doesn’t actually terrify you and gives real life experience. I’ve found her advice and facts do actually match up with other books I’ve read by doctors when people don’t take the statements in this book out of context. Great read that will have you laughing and I will be the first to pass it along to my next pregnant friend!

Such a refreshing book. I bought this back in 2003 when I was pregnant at 19 back when the internet couldn't provide all the answers it can now. Let me just tell you, this book was a lifesaver. I had no idea what to expect and this book talked about all of the taboo subjects that women just don't share with each other. I would have been lost without this!

This book is so outdated. Talking about how to keep your husband happy through your mood swings, and how to not freak him out about what you're going through when pregnant.......

This was the first pregnancy book I’ve read and I’m glad I went the unconventional route. She keeps it real but keeps it light and fun at the same time. Pregnancy is scary but it’s also super exciting. She touches all of the important stuff and also throws in the stuff that your doctor or friends ,ay not think to tell you. Highly recommend for newly pregnant couples to read together.

Despite some negative reviews, I ordered this book anyway since I had skipped ahead and already read "The Girlfriend's Guide to the First Year" and I enjoyed that one. It seems like those reviews are pretty nit-picky, or else I'm just easy to please. I enjoyed the writing style of this book and it not being stuffy and clinical like all the others I've read about pregnancy. Aside from only a few more gory details I learned from my actual friends, I definitely learned a lot from this book and I'm glad I have it. Some of the info is dated since it is a fairly old book, but not a big deal. If you don't agree with some of the things she advocates, just do what your instincts tell you.

Good stuff: She gives really good advice on certain topics such as not to be embarrassed or afraid of wasting your doctor's time. She helps explain how your relationship with your OB is very different from any other doctor. She is also very reassuring and helps you prepare for any number of gross and/or embarrassing issues that may come up during your pregnancy or delivery.Bad Stuff: Oh boy does she have body issues!!!! There is barely a topic in the entire book that she doesn't relate back to the fact that you are fat and disgusting when you are pregnant. She herself went from a size four to a ten so she was hardly obese but she will simply not stop harping on how unattractive you are when you are pregnant. She also goes out of her way to let you know that not only she thinks pregnant women are by nature gross to look at but that your husband thinks you look gross. She describes her own husband as only having sex with her when she was bigger out of pity. She does include one brief blurb that some men might like the pregnant body shape and find it a turn on but it is written in a style that leaves no doubt that she finds this to be a rare and laughable quirk that some men might have. If she hasn't already managed to make you feel self conscience about your changing body there is a paragraph about how some men tend to cheat on their wives while they are pregnant if they aren't up for sleeping with their husbands or if their husbands can't stomach sleeping with a pregnant woman. Not just insulting to women but she reveals a very low opinion of men as well. Reducing them to bumbling creatures who are disinterested in their wives apart from a creature to have sex with and to have to put up with if she gets emotional.Oh, and if you thought that maybe instead of getting neurotic about your increasing size and you would focus on your health, here she comes to shame you out of exercising. She seems to take this really personally. Only crazy people exercise. And if you exercise and something bad happens with your pregnancy you will always be haunted that you harmed your baby by exercising.Overall:I know this book has been revised over the years but I think it needs a complete rewrite for the next generation (by a new author).
