I love Elias' very direct approach to things - even though it sometimes has me mumbling to myself, and even though I don't always agree with her. Let's start at the beginning - Elias' stated purpose with this book is to cover the following four basic questions:1. Why do we read cards?2. What's so special about the Marseille Tarot?3. How can the cards uncover our blind spots?4. What does it mean to live a magical life, when we allow the stories that the cards tell us to offer solutions to our real problems? The images in this book are from Carolus Zoya's Tarot de Marseille, a rare Tarot deck made in Turin at the end of 1700. The deck is from the private collection of K. Frank Jensen, and the images are being used with his permission.Elias notes that context is everything, and that the answer to the question unfolds from the question itself via the images in the cards. In her readings she combines the cunning-folk method of reading (based on making logical inferences about the meaning of the cards) with the visual argument method (which relies on the subjective and individual art of perceiving)."Marseille Tarot" features full-length readings, based on real-life tarot consultations, which is a tremendous boon to understanding Elias' method of reading. The stories that evolve in Elias' readings are based on first hand observation of the categories of Embodiment (human, animal, celestial), Function (to lead, to split, to cut, to illuminate), Gesture (sitting, walking, pointing, howling), and Voice (silence, loudness, beyond the verbal). Each card is presented with a full color scan, a short discourse on the card and its function, a short question (with three cards drawn in response, all presented as full color scans), an interpretation of the cards, keywords for the card being discussed, function for the card being discussed, health indicators, and public life.Sample questions include: The Fool - "Can I trust my partner?", The Charioteer - "What is my strength?", and The Moon - "I would like to buy a new house for my family. Is this a good time?"Functions include: The Popess (cunning woman, study), The Lovers (partnership, dividing), Strength (overpowering, dominating, enduring), and Temperance (measuring, moderating, regulating).Health indicators include: The Magician (stress, nervous agitation, migraines), Justice (respiratory problems), and The Devil (binding, enslaving, manipulating).Public life includes: Death (with Justice, forensics analyst), The Stars (with The Moon, a spa), and Judgment (with The Hermit, gurus). There is note made of color and numbers, and how they apply to the cards. For the Court cards, Kings are seen as symbols of power, Queens as emblems of truth, Knights as Emblems of development, and Pages as symbols of initiation. At the end of the book we see several readings interpreted. The card images are full color, and gorgeous! This book is well written, beautifully formatted, with a stunning full color interior and a list of references that impresses! It is packed with information that is meant to be put to use. Whether you are a beginning student, a Tarot Sage, or somewhere in-between, you will find wisdom and value in this book.

In the end, it's all about storytelling, really. I don't mean making up a lie, nor cold reading. You don't memorize and parrot five paragraphs for each card, reading the text out loud as if from a book. You don't look to a bunch of Qabalistic, Astrological (or for that matter, Gastronomic) correspondences to tell you what each card means. No. Rather, you read for the joy and the fascination of watching the story unfold from the visual language set forth before your eyes - as it applies to the Querent's situation. Yes! That's it: you start with looking at what's actually on the cards, and THEN (and only then) do you add on some common-sense-based functions and keywords that arise naturally from what you see. That's what you'll learn how to do in this book.Make no mistake: this book is a take-no-prisoners, BS-free, down in the trenches guide to reading cards for people. Mercifully absent are the ten-page chapters on how a reader should refuse to answer most of the questions people COME to us to read in the first place. Further, Ms. Elias makes no bones about the fact that she engages in predictive readings. She doesn't drone on about how "we are above such things" as "mere prediction." She also dispenses with the layers of external occult symbolism many divination systems place on top of Tarot cards. Again, this is refreshing. She didn't set off my BS detector once, and that's saying something. I honestly can't tell you the last time I could say that about a "how-to" cartomancy book. Ms. Elias, I applaud your honesty and your bravery in knocking over a few of the PC shibboleths that cripple most cartomantic guidebooks today. After a very entertaining AND educational opening segment showcasing a reading in detail, she sets for her meanings for the Major Arcana, providing for each an example three-card reading, several keywords that make sense given what you see in the card, and then she follows with "functions," which really help tether each card to relatable examples. For example, two of Justice's functions are to "analyze" and to "measure," while two of her keywords are "fairness" and "discernment." In each case, the keywords and functions have a rational basis in what we can see on the card: e.g. scales to measure, a sword to discern and for analysis along with the scale. When she gets to the Minor Arcana, she uses a modified version of Dawn Jackson's excellent Hedgewytchery cartomantic system. Elias does provide a connection of each suit to an element, which you can always ignore if you want to eliminate more correspondences, but I found that they helped make the assignment of subjects to a suit make more sense. I would have liked more detail on the Minors and especially the lesser court cards, but she does provide a framework for you to flesh out your own meanings based on number+suit along with looking at the flora and shapes/patterns on each card. She concludes with a nice section on reading, showing several spreads and demonstrating why she prefers the Tirage en Ligne for the most part. At times, throughout this section and her example readings for each Major card, I can't quite follow HOW she got to her interpretation, but I consider that a fault in my imaginative/storytelling faculties, and not a weakness in her teaching. At other times, her example readings are so poetic that I, being earthbound, seriously doubt I'll ever be able to reach such results. Yet, again, she provides more than enough material for this rather prosaic student to try her wings.

The book is interesting because it includes photos of a really old Tarot set that is privately owned. The insights into the cards provided by the author make sense and provide a great foundation for interpretation. Elias is clearly an experienced reader and one can see this in the way she draws connections between the cards. I enjoyed reading this very much. One issue unrelated to the author: Amazon shipped this to me twice in a bubble wrap mailer and both copies were delivered with significant damage. The process around packaging at Amazon really needs to be re-evaluated.

This is a good book on the Marseille Tarot. Elias uses a "cunning-folk" style, which just means she reads the cards as they are, and without imputing esoteric symbolism to them. It goes well with Yoav Ben Dov's Tarot - the Open Reading and Michel-David's Reading the Marseille Tarot. I also suggest watching Tarology to see the method in action (and read Enrique Enriquez's accompanying book too).Elias is sometimes a frustrating writer, but here she writes clearly and with insight. Buy this if you're interested in Marseille Tarot and a more classical or traditional (non-esoteric) style of reading. It's her best book.

There aren't many books on Tarot de Marseilles, so when I find one, I scoop it up. This one is unique in that Camelia Elias uses cards from a special historical deck as her reference (many photos included) and also shows three-card spreads and her interpretations of them (she has a crisp, rapid style that in and of itself is quite fascinating). The author is riveting, intelligent and rounded in her knowledge and provides wonderful insights throughout. It's a wonderful read.
