[THIS REVIEW SPECIFICALLY PERTAINS TO THE "A TO Z CLASSICS" EBOOK EDITION PUBLISHED 01/15/19, but it refers to other editions as well.]The HARVARD CLASSICS was an early 20th century anthology of great works of literature (to use that word in its broadest sense to include fact and fiction, poetry, prose, novels, short stories, plays, essays, lectures, classics, works of history, biography, theology, philosophy, science, travel, etc.). But it was MORE than "merely" an anthology inasmuch as it ALSO provided vital supplemental and interpretive information about many of those works (introductions, criticisms, interpretations, footnotes, lists of characters, etc.). This special content is what made it unique.I have reviewed previous ebook editions of this iconic set, and each has proved imperfect in various ways. Sadly, this A TO Z edition repeats some of those very same flaws -- but it DOES correct at least one of them: It HAS a very USEFUL active TOC lacking in many other ebook HARVARD CLASSICS sets.MAIN PROS OF THIS SET:1. Active TOC to all content within each volume (including the SHELF OF FICTION). This is a VERY significant PRO, necessary to EASILY access the set's fabulous content. (Previous active TOCs listed volume numbers only, not their actual content.)2. Contains all footnotes (lacking in some editions). These often provide source information, clarification of terms, definitions, explanations, etc.3. Provides italicized words where they originally appeared within the texts, thereby showing words intended to be emphasized by their authors.4. Among its works are many not EASILY obtainable elsewhere (though all are in the public domain). This is the great strength of the HARVARD CLASSICS in general; the variety and expanse of its content is very impressive.MAIN CONS:1. At least 2 volumes (30 & 38) appear in very light print that cannot be darkened.2. Like many other ebook editions, not all the aforementioned supplemental content that made the HARVARD CLASSICS unique is provided. Most of Dr. Charles W. Eliot's brief introductions within the main set SEEM to be present, but in the SHELF OF FICTION most of Dr. William Allan Nielson's input for those items is missing. That omission is a major flaw. (Without the special material, those particular works are essentially no different from those that can be downloaded individually as public domain freebies.)The present edition is, perhaps, the best of a somewhat imperfect lot.(1) The edition from POOR RICHARDS PRINT SHOP more faithfully reproduces HARVARD CLASSICS content and is overall pretty great, except that it lacks the SHELF OF FICTION and costs more than the others.(2) The edition from AETERNA deliberately omits 10% of original content for religious reasons but also lacks footnotes and textual italics. It DOES, however, provide the supplemental materials (for those works it has not expunged). [UPDATE 01/20/19: Apparently this is no longer available, but Catholic Way Publishing offers THE GREAT CLASSICS AND FICTION COLLECTION, a pseudo-HARVARD CLASSICS with the same content as the Aeterna version (and with the same 10% expunged), but its version provides all footnotes and (so far as I can tell) all supplemental material -- and it is nicely formatted.](3) The set from DELPHI has some formatting issues and omits some footnotes and other information. (One hopes an updated and improved edition will soon appear.)(4) Earlier A to Z versions, and editions by GOLDEN DEER, ERIEANN, and at least one other ebook bundler generally share the same faults cited above for this one. In almost all ways they are virtually identical to this one EXCEPT that this one has an active TOC to the contents of all 51+20 volumes (and that definitely sets it apart.)This is a large bundle of 594310 Kindle location numbers, so its size may be problematic on some devices.Overall, while it is disappointing the entire contents of the original HARVARD CLASSICS have not been fully and faithfully reproduced, what is here provided comes very close. And it still represents a wide and varied selection of timeless, classic works that every literate person should wish to acquire, read, and otherwise make a part of his or her intellectual memory bank. Given the useful TOC, I have rated this edition 5-stars.I downloaded this set when it was being offered for free; at any REASONABLE price, however, it should very seriously be considered (even if you have previously downloaded an earlier version without a viable active TOC).As I've said before, and I think it bears repeating here, an imperfect set of the HARVARD CLASSICS is better than none at all, and this edition of it may be ONE of the best -- if not THE very best -- ebook acquisitions you will EVER make.

This improved version of the HARVARD CLASSICS from publisher A TO Z (August 29, 2018) corrects a significant defect in its earlier edition. Whereas the active TOC previously only listed volume numbers (1-51 and 1-20), the actual contents of those first 51 volumes are now specifically identified by author and title. (Alas, the Shelf of Fiction volumes still appear only as a list of numbers; authors and titles of those works are still not identified in the main TOC.)A few more translators names appear, though some still do not. Volumes 30 and 38 (both containing scientfic papers) annoyingly appear in a much lighter font that cannot be darkened. The most egregious fault which remains is the absence of the supplemental material for some works, mostly in the Shelf of Fiction. Without those introductions, criticisms, etc., the works themselves, though still every bit as great, are not as the HARVARD CLASSICS chose to present them.Happily, all the valuable footnotes are included. And except for the aforementioned light print in at least 2 volumes, the formatting is handsomely done throughout.Overall, this is better than the previous A TO Z edition, and now is also better than current versions by Eireann and Golden Deer. ANY edition is better than the censored Aeterna edition, but the Poor Richards Print Shop edition is still superior to all of them for volumes 1-51, but it totally lacks the Shelf of Fiction and is the highest priced. The new Delphi edition is occasionally awkwardly formatted and not all the original footnotes appear; some works have them and other works are missing them entirely.Despite my above criticisms of this A TO Z edition, I have now rated it 5-stars, because an imperfect HARVARD CLASSICS is still better than none at all, and as the gaffes get corrected, the sets gradually get better and better. And when such sets appear for free or for only $.99, it hardly seems fair to gong them. Yes, I wish ALL the original content was included, but I'm thankful for how much of it does appear here.Although the HARVARD CLASSICS is a massive and varied collection of great works of history, biography, literature (prose, poetry, drama), science, theology, etc., etc., it never claimed to a compilation of the world's "best." Rather, it was a carefully chosen group of works from among the very best designed to impart a college-level appreciation of the liberal arts to those who deliberately and systematically read them. Thus, many great works do NOT appear in it. The ODYSSEY, for example, was chosen to represent Homer and promote that goal, but the ILIAD was not. Many such works one might expect to find are not included, but rather than bemoan their absence, we marvel at how much DOES appear -- all of it deliberately chosen by Dr. Charles W. Eliot to accomplish the noble goal of educating the masses. The contents of the HARVARD CLASSICS (if seriously read, analyzed, discussed, and pondered) still fulfill Dr. Eliot's goal The timeless works contained herein are no less worth reading today than they were in the early 20th century when the HARVARD CLASSICS first appeared. Indeed, as I've said before, those who choose to download this ebook version of it -- and READ IT -- will likely soon come to regard it as one of the best ebook acquisitions they have ever made.
