Great story about a big change in the White House
What a beautiful picture book. Love the illustrations. The story is one we should all know about ‘our’ White House, but I’ve never heard this story before. Imagine the undertaking to switch the White House from gas lamps to electric lights. And Ike Hoover was only 19 years-old! Very well done. Should be in every school library. I hope there is a curriculum guide in the works.
In 1891, a young man nicknamed “Ike,†showed up at The White House. His job was to install wiring for a new Thomas Edison invention - electricity - and to help President Benjamin Harrison and his extended family (four Marys!) feel comfortable with the new technology. Ike went on to work for every President for the next forty years. Beautifully illustrated by Benjamin Hummel, it reveals a time in our nation’s history that is often overlooked.
