Finally a book that a child can follow without an adult around! My 6 year old grandson can follow the easy directions to many Lego buildings, toys, etc. I just gave him the book and showed him what he had to do to build the item and off he went! He loves it! It was a very quiet afternoon with him playing with his Legos and only came out of his room to show me what he had made next. The instructions or photos are so very easy to follow. I even tried it and it was great! I highly recommend this book to young Lego builders and their parents!

Bought this for our 8 year old son. The book has a lot of cute things to build. Love all the animals. Was a little disappointed that a lot of the designs are simple, but they are cute. Also like that they use pieces that are available in a lot of the various kits, and doens't need special pieces to make.

Easy for my little boy who is learning to read to follow and build on his own! Lots of fun projects, will be buying more

I bought this as a gift with the matching Lego set. I hesitated because amongst reviews for the different volumes, I read complaints that people didn't have the pieces the book called for and it was advertised that you could use probably with a set you already own, so they accused the product of false advertising. And I disagree about the false advertising. If you pay attention to the description and the Lego set you buy in your local Walmart, Target, Michael's Crafts or of course Amazon, Take notice of the 5 digit "code" on your Lego set that you already own or want to purchase, then look for it amongst the volumes of these books. It's very super duper likely deluxe you find one of the volumes of these books and one of the standard Lego sets match up.I bought this as a gift, my son (6years old) saw it before we gifted it and he approved. Now he wants a book. The child we gifted it to with the Legos was ear to ear smiles and hugs me every time he sees me in the classroom. Great idea to get their minds working with simple colors and blocks rather than the specific made for one reason set.

Nice, simple easy to follow instructions. Perfect for a 5-7 year old. Easy to put together, similar to LEGO juniors. A 4 year old could do some of the simpler figures. If you have a ton of LEGO’s, it’s probably best to sort out the needed pieces to reduce frustration. Then just leave them to it!

My kids loves this instruction book! He builds all kinds of stuff from it. My only complaint is that the designs are really simple, but I guess that's because of the age range it's good for. There are also only 25 designs in here. Seemed for the sized they could have fit more.

Actual directions, not just ideas. Perfect for my 5 year old just getting into big kid legos and wanting more specific and straightforward directions. The bigger books were over the 5 y/o's head, but fun to look at. This was doable, which is a whole different thing.

Organized in a logical format by theme: Animal Safari, Living Room, Pond in a Park, and Transportation Station. There is a nice table of contents that shows all of the figures for the book (see picture) and an instruction page on "how to use this book" (see picture). The different sections then separate for each figure showing the number of pieces and then step-by-step instructions. Easy for a little one to follow as well as the grown-ups that may be helping. The cover states 5 and up, and I would agree that needs to be at least a 5 year old since the child would need to be able to count the number of legos needed and then match them up using the picture instructions. The books contains the following to build: giraffe, zebra, rhino, tiger. elephant, safari sailboat, battleship, red plan, rocket, navy jet, radio tower, green plane, yacht, cat, mice, yellow house, streetlight, brown tree, mailbox, blue house, white tree, red house, swan, frog, bumblebee, turtle, and duck. Our 5 year old loves to just play with the Legos and make up things to build but he also love looking at the suggestions that come with the lego boxes. This is a nice addition for him and gives him something new to try and put together. The instructions state that these designs can be done using the LEGO® Classic set 10698 or as it states Legos you already have---giving new challenges and adventures without buying anything new. But that specific set is supposed to have all of the pieced necessary to build as instructed. This book would make a nice gift along with that particular set for a 5+ year old if you didn't already have Legos.I received both Book 1 and Book 3. There are a few models in these two books that are similar. For example, in both there are giraffes and rhinos and both have green planes as well as others that are similar (see listings). But, they are not exactly alike, so it is still fun to trying to build the different models.Printed in USA

Make sure you have this lego set. If you don't have all of exact pieces you can't build the items.

This book is an excellent book to use within your family to talk about healthy relationships and how to value yourself. I found at 52, reading it because my 11 year old was assigned it in school, that I was still able to gain valuable insight into things that drive my actions. It helped me understand some of my standard parenting actions which I did not like. (Despite many around me saying I was a great parent). As you get Oder and begin to more easily recognize that life is truly a circle, Touching Spirit Bear has some ideas on how to be a happier and more effective part of your own circle.

I loved this book.I was originally introduced to it during school. We read it as a class and did comprehension questions and tests and stuff. At first, I despised Cole. He was the exact type of person I normally can't stand, but as the book when on I found myself liking Cole more and more and feeling sorry for him.I actually learned a lot reading this book. About life, death, friendship, everything. We weren't even done reading it as a class when I decided to buy it on my Kindle.it was entirely worth every penny I paid.I ended up reading ten times before the final test (which I aced, thank you very much). You can bet that I will be off the coast of British Columbia someday, searching for a Spirit Bear. At first I thought this guy was lying, but anyone who can write something so perfect and touching is not a liar.I would like to close this review by saying that I bought the sequel about three minutes ago, and I just finished the book for the eleventh time. Also I usually find at least four mistakes in young adult novels. I found none in this one. Congrats editors!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a very interesting and profound book, specially for these days that everyone is angry at something or someone, this book came to me at a moment when I'm angry at someone who betrayed me, but in the end anger only hurts the one that carries it so I'm going to stop my anger. Please read it you'll be surprised of the out come and what you'll learn.

I read this book so I could discuss it with my daughter, who was assigned it in school. I, like the protagonist Cole (and the author), have spent a lifetime enslaved to, trying to understand, strategize around, and resolve my anger. I related to Cole’s explosiveness, the difficulty he had recognizing his problem, the advise he got from Garvey and Edwin, and his eventual transformation. There are many lovely passages in the book, and the story makes for a compelling read. However, here and there I felt there were inconsistencies in the way Cole was portrayed. For example, he might achieve a milestone in his evolution only to be oddly regressed in the next chapter. While this may be realistic in terms of human progress, the author’s presentation sometimes felt like a stutter. Instead of putting me deeper inside Cole’s persona, it drew attention to authorial technique, and thus created a distance. That said, for a teen reader, the book provides an excellent model for facing one’s mistakes, recognizing the emotions that trigger them, taking responsibility, and initiating healing.

I read this book for the first time in seventh grade for my literature class. Rereading it, being an adult now, gave me a new perspective on the events in it.I bought this book nine years later for a reason. It really was as good as I remembered it to be. The messages of taking responsibility for your mistakes and learning to get control of your anger were really strong. Cole being forced into humiliating situations like eating bugs to survive really forced him to become humble in a way that not much else can.Cole's arrogance in the beginning, thinking he could escape, was very realistic. His lack of forethought as to what he would do if he got to land and had a warrant out for his arrest was also very realistic for a hotheaded fifteen year old.I found the dynamic between his parents at the circle meetings to be very relatable, as someone who grew up with abusive parents.Cole's sudden horror at having almost burned the at.oow, the only symbol of trust anyone had ever granted him, was very realistic and understandable.I think there was a missed opportunity at addressing the PTSD that the bear attack must have caused. I find it very hard to believe that he didn't suffer from it.The things I didn't like about this book are few. One of them is the message that everything in life is what you make it. That can be true for a lot of cases, but it's important to remember that no one can turn every instance of suffering into a party just by putting some tomato and pepper onto it. Suffering hurts, and it's unrealistic and damaging to expect people who are suffering to smile through it. Humans have a range of emotions for a reason and consoling others who are hurting with some love laugh love spiel is not going to get you anywhere. Empathy and understanding are important for healthy relationships. While I liked this book, I wouldn't recommend the sequel at all. For any of you considering reading it, go check out my review first.

Amazing work. It is a story for a young audience but carries such profound meaning in regards to handling anger and forgiveness that adults can benefit from it as well. I would recommend it for anyone, child or adult, facing the burdensome effects of anger, bullying, doubt, or difficulty with forgiving. It is an engaging story that kept me turning the pages of the book. It isn't too harsh or disturbing as some reviews have stated that it is, it shows real depth and development of the complicated events of anger and adolescent violence. Even to "good kids" this book can be a lesson in the self-anger that another person can display in the form of bullying. I am giving this book to my nephews to read this summer.

Ben Mikaelson’s book touching Spirit bear was truly magnificent. The plot was amazing and the events were very interesting. After I read this book I really just wanted to read more. When I received my package in the mail I was exited to start reading. All in all, this was an amazing read and I recommend it to all.

First off, I want to say that anyone looking for an autobiographical read should get their hands on this book!! This book explains the long, treacherous journey that these three young men were forced to embark on. Leaving their villages behind in Southern Sudan due to the Second Sudanese Civil War, these boys illustrate the hardships and difficulties they themselves endured as well as thousands of others. In search of refuge these three boys were split up multiple times until they all ended up in a camp in Kenya. Fortunately all three of these young men were able to fly to America where they became a part of a program called the Lost Boys of Sudan to have a new life in America. Unfortunately, many girls didn't make it because they were usually in the house whereas boys were usually out in the fields and were able to escape once the war broke out. I highly encourage all to read this book!!

I became involved with a group like this from 2000-2004. It is an amazing act of courage to tell the story. The stories in this book parallel stories my friends told me first hand. The assistance they received upon arrival was desperately inadequate. Most found horrible minimum wage jobs. Many moved around from job to job without much stability. And I would say although very charming, most were unable initially to be valuable employees. They needed much more than just a few months or weeks to adjust.I remember going into an apartment in the winter and realizing they hadn't turned on the heat. Why? They didn't know it existed. They didn't know how to draw the blinds. Or use the stove. They didn't know that there was hot and cold water... Important if you plan to shower in the winter especially. And despite that, life was so much better than where they came from.Anything that increases the understanding of and compassion for these young men should be required reading..

This is a remarkable story about the strength of the human spirit. It gives one a better appreciation for the freedoms we have here in America. It is a story of faith having been tried by fire.I tells in gripping detail about the lives of 3 young boys escaping from the civil war in Sudan and all of the horrifying things they had to face on their escape southern Sudan to Ethiopia, and back and then to Kenya. They had to cross dangerous rivers and desserts, live in and out of refugee camps. Despite everything, they had to endure they managed to hang on to their humanity, sacrificing and helping others. The story even sheds some light on the unfortunate amount of corruption that prevents a lot of humanitarian aid from reaching those in need. After reading this one simply cannot help being so impressed with the boys' courage and perseverance in the face of everything happening to them.

I am in 9th grade and i was forced to read this book for honors english, and honestly I'm glad I was forced. The book is so inspiring and interesting as they talk about their years of walking not knowing if they were going to die the next day. It teaches you not to take anything for granted not your house, your family, food, even personal items. It also teaches you about the horrible war happening in sudan. I recomend that you purchase this book and learn about people who have almost nothing but still have hope in their sad world.

This book contains an amazing story- one ALL older children should read and adults as well. Seeing what these LITTLE boys as well as all the other Sudanese people went through will shock you and hopefully change the way you think about things. We complain about so many little things like the crack in our iPhone screen, or gas prices, or the fact that they are out of our favorite ice cream. These boys were surrounded by death, fear, poverty, and terrible conditions during a time of unspeakable terror for many people. They endured hardships and came out the other end and are creating a better life for themselves. The way they wrote their stories makes the book an easy read although it may bring tears to your eyes!! I have rotated it between each of my teenage children- knowing they need to see what life can be like for some many others. READ this ... It will be a story that will stay with you forever...

Review

Praise for The Voyeur’s Motel: Named a Best Book of the Year by the Daily Mail (Event Critics’ Selection) “This book flipped nearly all of my switches as a reader. It’s a strange, melancholy, morally complex, grainy, often appalling and sometimes bleakly funny book, one that casts a spell not dissimilar to that cast by Janet Malcolm’s The Journalist and the Murderer . . . Gripping . . . [Talese] lays out what he knows and does not know in sentences that are as crisp as good Windsor knots. He expresses his qualms, but trusts the reader to come to his or her own conclusions . . . An intense book.”―Dwight Garner, New York Times “Informative and intriguing . . . [I] was enlightened and entertained by The Voyeur’s Motel.”―Washington Post “This is a weird book about weird people doing weird things, and I wouldn’t have put it down if the house were on fire.”―Washington Times “Whether Gerald Foos is telling the complete truth is almost beside the point. The Voyeur is so fascinating a character―insightful, observant and amoral―that the reader becomes caught up in his story.”―Providence Journal “If you’ve ever wanted your inner voyeur to run free, vicariously at least, then The Voyeur’s Motel is for you . . . Motel delves deeply into the taboo world with no holds barred and no excuses . . . The type of unflinching New Journalism that Talese helped found three decades ago.”―Jackson Clarion Ledger “Pioneering reporter Gay Talese tells the ultimate surveillance story in The Voyeur’s Motel . . . Talese―a master of elegant, understated prose―uses an objective reportorial style to tell the voyeur’s story, and it’s the right approach for a narrative that requires no extra spice . . . An unforgettable book.”―BookPage “Foos [is revealed] as a singularly pervy, grandiose, and strangely eloquent weirdo who would be irresistible to any writer, let alone one as talented, patient, and thoughtful as Talese . . . Those seeking a uniquely discomfiting journey couldn’t find a better pair of reprobates with whom to cast their lot.”―Booklist “Undoubtedly creepy and unnerving but also an entirely compelling slice of seamy American life.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “[A] truly shocking story . . . Not your typical beach book, perhaps, but you may want to read this compulsive page-turner―which raises all sorts of fascinating journalistic, moral and legal issues―under cover of an umbrella.”―Barnes & Noble Review “A provocative and compelling story.”―Midwest Book Review “Talese is a master at finding and reporting intimate matters in a clean, fine prose style so that the pages fly by. Thus the odd subject of Talese’s book is transparently manifest, without a biased or judgmental eye, all the better to reveal what Foos has done.”―Psychodynamic Psychiatry “An unsettling read . . . Foos’s notes offer a long-term glimpse into the sex lives of Americans.”―Maclean’s (Canada) “The Voyeur’s Motel . . . had me hooked . . . It’s an unsettling book, like being trapped in a hall of mirrors. The reader observes Talese observing Foos observing his guests. It might make you lose your bearings, but at the same time it’s completely mesmerising, and often darkly funny, too.”―Daily Mail (UK) (Event Critics’ Best Books of the Year) “[An] eye-popping book . . . Completely riveting from start to finish . . . Darkly comical . . . It is by turns fascinating and illuminating, very creepy and very funny, and will live in my memory long after many more doggedly accurate works have vanished into thin air.”―Mail on Sunday (UK) “A riveting page-turner . . . Short and brisk, it tells a compellingly sordid story, and Foos is one fascinating dude . . . The book is compulsively readable.”―Winnipeg Free Press

About the Author

Gay Talese was born in Ocean City, New Jersey, in 1932, to Italian immigrant parents. He attended the University of Alabama, and after graduating was hired as a copyboy at the New York Times. After a brief stint in the army, Talese returned to the New York Times in 1956. Since then he has written for numerous publications, including Esquire, the New Yorker, Newsweek, and Harper’s Magazine. It was these articles that led Tom Wolfe to credit Gay Talese with the creation of an inventive form of nonfiction writing called “The New Journalism.”Talese’s bestselling books have dealt with the history and influence of the New York Times (The Kingdom and the Power); the inside story of a Mafia family (Honor Thy Father); his father’s immigration to America from Italy in the years preceding World War II (Unto the Sons); and the changing moral values of America in the period between World War II and the AIDS epidemic (Thy Neighbor’s Wife).Gay Talese lives with his wife, Nan, in New York City.

Talese, by letting so much of the story be told in the Voyeur's own words, by going into such intimate detail of the Voyeur's life, asks the question of us, the readers, Wouldn't we, if we could have gotten away with it, done the same? Talese doesn't judge. While he clearly places himself above the Voyeur culturally and intellectually, his words occasionally seething pretension, he lets the reader decide whether Gerald Foos is a reprehensible creep, or just another person who thinks nobody is watching, only following human nature. The New Yorker article, which I initially thought so fantastic it had to be a fiction, is really sufficient to tell the bulk of the tale. The book follows up, affirming that this really did happen, and that the aftermath was nil. For that purpose, the Netflix documentary does the job, and if you've seen it, and read the original article, there's not much more in the book to make it worth reading. That's not entirely true. There are some stories, told in Foos' sometimes eloquent prose, which are so fantastic as to almost certainly be fantasies. Others are written in a style much more consistent with fabrication than to contemporaneous recollection. By including these stories, without passing judgment on their veracity, Talese lets the reader's own intuition decide to what extent Foos is credible. Again, we the tables are turned, and we become the voyeurs.

I saw the documentary, which made me want to read the book. Why? The lurid life of a man snooping on his motel guests was a curiosity. What I discovered in this book is that Talese and his subject are both obsessed with the concept of voyeurism. Talese admits his life as a journalist is that of a voyeur, which makes sense, and his protagonist here is often given too much credit for being a de facto researcher obsessed with the personal lives of his guests. When the motel owner witnesses a murder in his hotel and doesn't call the police I could no longer give him credit for any of his curiosity. He chose protecting his voyeur palace over a human life. What I found most interesting was the years of being voyeur proved to the motel owner not that people's intimate lives are salacious, rather they are dreary and often unhappy in the extreme. That revelation is what redeems the book.

What a great book! I love Gay Talese's style of writing he's such a wonderful journalist. Just tells the story like it is, doesn't add his emotion into it, really great journalist. Anyway, the story was rather shocking, there were lots of moments where I was shocked and disgusted, and doesn't that make for a great book? I also watched the documentary on Netflix (which was released recently) and it was nice to see the motel owner in "person" - haha. I thought it was hilarious the motel owner considered himself a researcher. Anyway, this book was great. I loved reading all the stories and having a private peek into folks' sex lives... I guess I'm a voyeur too in a way!

This is obviously a minority opinion but I rather liked this book. The "voyeur" is a creepy guy and his attempt to make his observations sound like serious sexual research are unconvincing. His interests are prurient. However, he often makes somewhat astute comments about the people he observes. That doesn't redeem him in any way but it does make for some interesting reading. There are some discrepancies in his story but it rings true on the whole.I also found no reason to be critical of Mr. Talese's conduct. His actions were appropriate for a journalist.

A voyeur who owns a motel contacts the author (Gay Talese) and wants to tell his story. The voyeur (with his wife's permission) spends years recording on legal size paper what he saw through a vent in the ceiling. He also writes his conclusions for each entry. So this book is mostly fact, with photos of the real motel. Of all the stories, lesbian women make love the longest and have a lot of orgasms. Most married couples argue, and don't have sex. The men, in general, are insenstive trolls. When a guy screws his wife, it's mechanical and leaves her frustrated. (Just like real life???)

While I would say the story is unbelievable if true, I found it to be not believable. In any case the telling of the story is clunky. It would have been better if Talese wrote the narrative of Gerald Foos, and then wrote this book as the narrative of writing that book. Talese does a good job in his description of people, places, and events; but there just isn't enough here to justify a book. There was a share of repetition and analysis that helped to stretch the book out far enough to make me desire its final page. Talese claims to strive for factual information, but adds his own opinions and analysis. I would have preferred more factual information. I'll form my own opinion through my own analysis.

A quick read, and one of my favorite reads about human behaviour. Gerald Foos isn’t a psychologist and has no sociology training, yet his observations are still insightful and fascinating.Authenticity is questioned as some dates and stories don’t line up, but the book becomes more of an exploration of Gerald the man and Gerald the Voyeur and all the dichotomy and irony that exists in that single person, rather than the Voyeur’s accounts. On a side note, though: Sometimes it feels like Gay Talese prefers writing about Gay Talese more than he must write about Gerald Foos.

Very interesting. Controversial idea whose results should be taken into account. Valid observations.Recommended reading for all interested in the lives and behavior of common American people.

This book was the basis for the acclaimed TV miniseries, which I haven’t seen. I did watch enough snippets to grasp the overall story. But, I believe this book provided more depth. The book presents the short and eventful existence of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne. It starts with the group’s rigorous training in Georgia, where the harsh discipline shaped an indestructible camaraderie. The story continues with the group’s relocation to England, and its D-Day parachuting into Normandy. E Company’s exploits mirrored the Allies’ major European battles, including Market-Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. It seems extraordinary that one group should thread through these events, but perhaps because the group, itself, was extraordinary. The book winds down with E Company’s trek to the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s mountain retreat near Berchtesgaden, followed by their occupation duty in Austria and return to the United States. The book concludes with an update on the members’ lives, and their recollections.Ambrose compiled this story by interviewing E Company members. It also was revealed that they mostly kept in touch. Although their lives had diverged, they continued to be bound by their shared wartime experience.I have previously read about these events, but no other accounts of these actions seemed as vivid as Ambrose’s. Using his interviews, he has fashioned a narrative supported with first-person detail that places the reader right on the scene. In fact, I recently glimpsed some clips from the TV series. I don’t feel I’ve missed much.

I like reading Stephen Ambrose's books; however, I found this one a bit self-indulgent, as fully 20%-25% of it detailed his own personal relationships. One chapter covered his brothers; another chapter covered his friends, a third chapter covered his former students, and the final chapter covered his father. I don't begrudge him doing this, BUT, more chapters detailing other friendships should have been included. The friendships wouldn't have needed to be between famous people, either. Why not focus on combat vets and their friendships, although one chapter was devoted to Easy Company.

One of America's greatest strengths has been, and is, its citizen soldiers - the ones called upon in time of military crisis to defend and defeat, who do the job, and then return to their private lives. BAND OF BROTHERS is a tribute to these individuals in general and, in particular, to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The book begins with Company E's formation in July 1942, and ends with its inactivation on November 30, 1945. It's a narrative history based on letters, diaries, news clippings and personal interviews. It spans the company's training in the United States and England, its combat roles in the D-Day invasion, the subsequent Operation Market Garden, and the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and ends with the capture of Hitler's Alpine retreat, Berchtesgaden, and the last months as an occupying force in Austria. There's a stark contrast between Company E's sojourn in the Hell of battle and its occupation duty, the latter characterized by author Stephen Ambrose as a "soldier's dream life" of "mountain weather, unlimited sports, women and booze, easy duty, (and) good hunting".Company E's full complement was 140 men - 8 officers and 132 enlisted. But, as casualties mounted, original members were replaced with new, and the cast of characters is large. At times, BAND OF BROTHERS is more a series of vividly drawn vignettes featuring named individuals in the context of a particular combat operation. The reader never really gets to "know" any one soldier, with the exception of perhaps Dick Winters, who provides a continuity of sorts. Winters began as a 2nd Lieutenant commanding a platoon, and ended the war as a Major commanding the 2nd Battalion. To the degree that the author allows, Winters is the foremost hero of a group of heroes, i.e. all of E Company. The reader is thus forced to identify with the unit as a whole throughout its travails and final triumph. This was the author's intent, and is the book's ultimate strength. In the paperback edition, there are only eight pages of photographs and two of maps. One wishes for more. The last chapter on post-war careers is a nice, and logically necessary, touch. Most war-centered works of non-fiction focus on the "great commanders" - Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Nelson, Washington, Lee, Grant, Rommel, Montgomery, Eisenhower, Patton, MacArthur, etc. BAND OF BROTHERS is the best book I can recall on the experiences of the common soldier - the guy in the front trench whose only reward at the end of hostilities, if he lives, is a wound or two, a souvenir enemy pistol or flag, and the greatest of all, a feeling of comradeship with his fellows that lasts for life. This last almost makes war seem worth it.Currahee!

One of the essential reprints of 2018. The annotations are nearly as thrilling as Chandler's prose.

I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth analysis of _The Big Sleep_. The notes dissect the themes, imagery, and background of Chandler's most famous novel. Additionally, it reveals Chandler's strategy of "cannibalizing" scenes from previously published stories to build TBS. As an added bonus, the notes compare and contrast the novel with the film.As the book's cover blurb recommends, if you haven't read TBS, you can read through without the notes. If you have read it, the notes will deepen your appreciation and understanding of the story.Reading this w/the annotations was pure pleasure.

I've read TBS previously in three different editions. The wonderful annotations make this edition the best. They put the reader in the 1930'3 LA scene of corruption with sharp observations that compliment Chandler's incomparable hard-boiled prose. However, the best line in the book - indeed, the best line in all of hard-boiled literature - doesn't get a comment. Here's the line: "Dead men are heavier than broken hearts." Critics generally find that the hard-boiled manner in telling a story began with Hemingway and Hammett. This edition makes plain that such a method started right here with The Big Sleep.

Excellent addition to my library. I will chew on it slowly, and enjoy it. Could I have some more please! Thank you. "The General spoke again, slowly using his strength as carefully as an out-of-work showgirl uses her last good pair of stockings."

If you love Raymond Chandler and have read everything, both fiction and non-fiction, that is available, biographies, letters, everything, and have reconciled yourself to the failures of all those would-be Marlowe updaters to hit the mark ("New! A Philip Marlowe novel by the latest bandwagon rider!") (let's face it, Chandler died and he's not coming back) then this annotated edition is a gold mine. Each note is as tasty as the prose it illuminates and the only criticism is, why stop now? You've got more to do, people. Get on to the rest of the canon. The only negative is, the book ended and I wanted to stay immersed in a world that no longer lives except in our imaginations. (But then, that's all the worlds we think we inhabit, isn't it?)

I've read THE BIG SLEEP three or four times already, of course, but reading it this way -- with notes and supplemental materials on the right-hand page facing the text on the left-hand page -- made it feel so fresh it was almost new to me. If you love American crime fiction, you will never have more fun reading it than with this annotated version of THE BIG SLEEP. It's utterly mesmerizing stuff.

If you are a Chandler fan (and I am) then this Annotated version of "The Big Sleep" is a must read.I read it slowly over a month to savor it. I have read the book several times and seen the movie version with Humphrey Bogart probably 20 times. The annotations are drawn from the author's own letters, essays, and of course his other works, in particular the short stories that he cannibalized (Killer in the Rain, The Curtain) to form the novel, The Big Sleep. Comparisons to other authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald, Robert B Parker, James Cain, Conan Doyle, etc as well as Romantic Poets (Chandler was educated in England and loved the Romantic Poets and playwrights hence the name Marlowe for his famous detective), and non-fiction works like "The Hero of a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. We also get a comparison to historical Los Angeles and environs in the early to mid 20th century to get a full understanding of the time and place where the story takes place. It contains maps, newspaper articles, and pictures.

This is the book you need if you want to immerse yourself in the quintessential nor city of the 40s and 50s. And of course I do. I was there in the 40s, the 50s, and as an adult in the mid 60s. It's all gone now, but I remember.

I like the book by for the cost of this paperback I was a little disapointed and didn't feel as though I learned very much and the DYI projects in the book are not the greatest...

Ok book if you’re wanting to get started.

Fast shipping! Good customer service. Product as described. Thank you!

I thought it was a book on creating gardens. The author insults the intelligence of the reader. Waste of money, do not waste your money.

Seems to be only for children's gardens

lots of good info

Wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Doesn't have the amount of ideas I imagined it would.

As orderd.
