This book has been very useful to me. I am studying for a B.C.E (Board Certified Entomologist) and this book is detailed enough to be helpful, yet not so verbose as to make you want to poke your eyes out and feed them to the cat while reading it.

Correct Book XD

just a brilliant, easy and wonderfully written book

One of the best, most thorough short books out there on the subject -- easy to tote around, concise, yet readable and even enjoyable. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the stinging arthros are skipped out on, but if that's important to you, your best bet might be downloading the notes pages from the University of California's course pages website (I'd recommend, honestly, snagging all of their pages from their micro and parasitology departments -- these are GOOD notes and videos, priceless and yet price-less), and/or snagging a copy of the appropriate (and it will be longer) chapter on subject same from "Medical and Veterinary Entomology" (which is probably my 5-star GET THIS IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT text/reference and all-around reader on the subject. It's thorough, it's got good pictorial coverage, and it's incredibly readable -- but expensive (worth it, but what good is that if you can't afford it -- and you'll RARELY (read: probably NEVER) find a cheap used copy on here or anywhere).As for this particular (short, handy, soft-cover and light) book: Note well that if you're taking an undergrad course in med (and maybe also vet) parasitology with entomology, this book is the most often used book in my experience. It can be well-supplemented (especially in the graphics section, which is admittedly poor, save for the very helpful line drawings and graphs) by John T. Sullivan's "Electronic Atlas of Parasitology" CD (currently in Version 2.02 (as far as I know), available from the author who is a professor at UC-San Francisco, via ebay, and possibly also via Amazon, for somewhere around $12-15).All in all, I thoroughly recommend this book, ESPECIALLY for anybody reviewing for exams or finals, where it truly shines for its concision and well-thought-out format. If you've got labs (and especially if you have a lot of lab quizzes), this book will only get you so far in preparation for that portion of your education (for eg, while you might find descriptions of differentiating culex from aedes, the pictures themselves are pretty much necessary, take my word) -- do do the extra work and obtain something with good pictorial (color is preferable but not necessary) views... even if it is a book specifically on field entomology & identification, or in combination with that CD (more helpful with the parasitology portion, to be honest).

About the Author

Dr. Thomas Hyslip is currently the Resident Agent in Charge of the Department of Defense, Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Cyber Field Office, Eastern Resident Agency. Dr. Hyslip has testified as an expert witness on computer forensics and network intrusions at numerous federal, state, and local courts. Dr. Hyslip is also a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and is currently assigned as an Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. COL Hyslip has a mix of active duty and reserve assignments spanning over 20 years including assignments with the US African Command, Office of Inspector General, the Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General, and the US Army Reserve Information Operations Command. In 2005 COL Hyslip deployed to Iraq with the 306th Military Police Battalion and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge. Dr. Hyslip is currently an adjunct Professor at Norwich University Dr. Hyslip received his Doctor of Science degree in Information Assurance from Capitol College in 2014. Dr. Hyslip previously obtained a Master of Science degree from East Carolina University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University.

Got some good pointers. Especially helpful because we've been tethered to cable for such a long time. Can't get around internet cable yet. We've learned option for watching most of our favorite shows.

I must have been looking for a "Dummies" type of book. I am sure it was very complete and accurate. I just needed step by step instructions for the best option. This book laid out all of the options (confusing,) and had very little step by step. I ended up not cutting the cord.

Book seems complete, but bogs down in specific models,but not explain what part does. Give us an overview of ehrtr we going first, before we get lost in the thicket.

Book didn't have a lot of in-depth information that I would have expected for the price and the author. Okay for the DIY crowd to gather background info; however, not as useful for a classic car restoration. Good service by Amazon again.

There is a series of these little pamphlet booklets. They are an average of 30 to 32 pages long. They all are on a wide range of do it yourself home survival topics. I am not a "preper" or anything like that but I do want to have a more productive garden and be able to store what I harvest more efficiently. I want to be able to store what my husband hunts and what I grow without having to rely on electricity because I have lived in hurricane prone areas and snow storm areas were power was lost for hours, days, even a week once, and we have lost a lot of valuable food. These pamphlets are awesome to help you learn what you need to look into. They do not give many answers but are awesome blueprints to what you need to look into for what you want to do. I have learned a lot of what I wanted to do from these, then go to the library to borrow the books with the information I need! We are slowly collecting the whole series.

This is a very basic book on building smokehouses. Even though it is a very short book, the information it provides is very helpful in building a smoker. I built mine based roughly on the instructions in this book. The end result is excellent. I used this book to base my rough design on and then got assistance from several online forums. This book shows you how to build a traditional smokehouse, similar to what was / has been built for generations.

I liked the read, but having never smoked any meat I'd want more detail on the fire box. I can build plenty, but I'm immediatley thinking about air intake to the firebox and how to clean out the ash. How do you keep the fire going? How much wood to use, how often to add it, etc.

Projects range from a 2 foot deep hole dug into the ground to a 6 ft by 6 ft concrete block house with separate firepit. Provides specific plans on how to construct a poured concrete roof with removeable plug. Specific plans on constructino of the laid up block house. Specific plans on constructing the smaller wood frame shack with buried smoke tubes to the seperate fire pit. 60 pages less than 5 dollars each page has a piece of information worth the price of the book

Decent pamphlet. Shows and gives directions for 4 types of smokers. Yes you can find more options and directions on line but I like having paper/books on hand. For $4 it is worth it to me

Clear uncomplicated instructions. However, if you are not builder, you may want to hire someone. The USDA concrete smoker is a lifetime investment. Build one and your list of friends will grow.

I did an extensive Internet search for information about building smokehouses, and this book kept coming up as just about the only source of information currently in print. Its low price recommends it as a good source to begin with, although we found out the hard way that there's a section in the smokebox plans that's a bit confusing (When you put the front frame on the box, be sure to put the 2x3's on flat, attaching them through the 2" side). We also felt the structure is improved with the use of screws instead of nails, and by reinforcing the front frame with angle brackets.Putting that aside (cut more wood), this succinct book gives the basics for putting together several forms of smokers of various sizes, and some beginning fundamentals of smoking meats. If you want details about the smoking process, though, we'd recommend you look at other books that really focus on technique.No book about smoking meats seems to be complete, but this is the best we've found about building a smokehouse or one of the smaller alternatives (box or barrel).

Great info and a wonderful reference for ideas. I probably wont build any of the smoke houses it gives plans for, but it does really inspire the imagination to create something unique. The plethora of drawings and sketches really help to visualize the process and give you some new ideas for a fresh approach on how to make a smokehouse that fits your own unique situation.

About the Author

Master Lam Kam Chuen is a recognized master of the arts of Tai Chi and Chi Kung, and a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. He was born in Hong Kong shortly after World War II and at a very early age began training in Chinese martial arts. Studying under masters such as Lung Tse Chung and Yim Sheung Mo (both of whom were disciples of Ku Yue Chang, known throughout China as “The King of Iron Palm”), he was trained in Choy Lee Fut, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Iron Palm, as well as Tai Chi. He then studied Chinese medicine, becoming a qualified bonesetter and herbalist, and opened a school and clinic in Hong Kong. He also undertook the study of Chi Kung, a system for the cultivation of internal energy in the body. Using his medical skills and his knowledge of Chi Kung he began to develop a new form of Tai Chi, now known as Lam Style Tai Chi. Master Lam came to the West in 1976 when he became the first Tai Chi instructor appointed to teach in the Inner London Education Authority. In 1987 he gave the first European demonstration of the art of Zhan Zhuang Chi Kung, which he studied in Beijing under Professor Yu Yong Nian, the world's leading authority. He now teaches and practices medicine at The Lam Clinic in London's Chinatown. Following the widely acclaimed BBC series, The Way of the Warrior, Master Lam was invited to act as consultant to the sequel publication, The Way of Harmony. This was followed by his ground-breaking work published by Gaia Books, The Way of Energy, introducing the Zhan Zhuang system of “Standing Like a Tree”.

Chapter 1FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENTSThis set of basic exercises is designed to relax and tone all the major joints in your body. Starting with the neck, you work down through your entire frame. For the best results from these exercises, you should work through the full set in the correct order.The movements are simple to learn. Most of them are based on the natural action of the joints when they are relaxed and free from tension. For this reason, if you are just starting to learn Tai Chi you should begin with this sequence to ensure that you develop a good foundation of smooth, relaxed movement.These fundamental exercises are presented in a way that will be particularly helpful to anyone who has never done slow exercise before. They are ideal if you are out of shape, recuperating from an illness or a physical injury, or are elderly. Follow the instructions carefully, go slowly, and don't strain yourself in any movement and the benefits can be remarkable.The exercises are based on two principles. First, there is a great deal of tension in our joints and their associated muscles. It is essential, therefore, to learn how to relax these areas in order to keep them supple and to help overcome the damaging effects tension has on the body. Second, all our major energy pathways pass through the joints. If tension exists there, then the natural flow of energy in the body will be blocked, leading to increased stress and, eventually, illness. So these exercises, simple as they may seem at first, meet some of our most fundamental needs.Each exercise is described in detail, including the starting position for each, the precise movement, the pauses, and the all-important concluding moments of stillness. Many of these features are common to each exercise, but they are repeated so that you can be sure that at each stage you know exactly what you are supposed to be doing.EXERCISE ROUTINESWorking through the full set of 18 fundamental exercises gently and slowly, as described on the preceding pages, takes just under 10 minutes. You should start at this level, carefully making all the movements in order, pausing briefly in between each one, until you are familiar with the full set. The number of repetitions to start with for each exercise is set out in Level 1 on the chart opposite.If you are unfamiliar with this type of slow exercise, or you are out of shape, in poor health, or elderly, take your time and do them as gently as possible. This way, without straining yourself, you will start to make progress each time you do them. Some people may prefer to remain at this basic level, doing the movements as best they can. Even if this is the only exercise you can take, it will be of great benefit to you.Once you are familiar with the exercises, and if you find that you can do them fairly easily, there are two further levels set out on the chart opposite. So, for example, you proceed to making four gentle circles of the head at Level 2, then six circles at Level 3, and so on. Maintain the calm, steady pace throughout. It is essential for Tai Chi exercise that you keep to the discipline of doing all movements slowly and evenly.Try to do these exercises every day. Happy to say I'm using this book as backup for my Scott Cole DVD's, and finding I LOVE TAI CHI!! I think it works best to have both narrative description and video demonstration . Makes learning the moves so much easier. Thank you!

I love this book. It's easy to follow, easy to understand, and the writing and approach contain no psychological or mystical clutter -- you can add that on your own if you like such, but in this book you don't have to put up with reading it. These movements are wonderful, especially when one needs to be energized. I thought I wouldn't enjoy these movements because they aren't vigorous, or at least they didn't seem so. But each time I finish a session, I feel full of energy. Highly, highly recommended!

Am using it every day and best of all- looking forward to each day's exercise. If you're familiar with Tai Chi, you'll get the idea right away. If you're a beginner - hang in there, follow the instructions exactly and in a couple of weeks you'll be amazed that such easy exercise can make such a difference.

The exercises in this book are great for recovering from a total knee replacement. Each exercise is displayed in very well illustraded drawings for each motion of the exercise with clear and concise words describing each motion. The solid texture of the pages allows you keep the book propped open to the exercise page. Each exercise motion contains some form of breathing exercise for the oxygen our body needs. There are 48 exercises covering fundamental movements, strength & motion, balance & movement and working with a partner(4 exercises) all without the use of any equipment. At the end of this book these exercises can be combined together to produce various kinds of tai chi form. I am using this book for its many health benefits. I highly recommend this book for all ages and physical conditions. Relieving stress is a big benefit.

I bought this book for my mom after prolonged atrophy due to chemotherapy. She regained her mobility, all thanks to this book.

Written by a widely recognized Chinese expert (he did the venerable BBC series "The Way of the Warrior"), Kam Chuen has created a marvelous book, which combines some 48 exercises that sink deep into your thought and habit as easily as a dream. This dreamlike communication is the result of restful illustrations in gentle pastels and succinct instructions. The exercises are divided into four workouts comprising fundamental movements, strength and motion, balance and movement, and partner movements. The book lies flat so you can learn each movement as you go along. It would be a masterpiece even without the second part, which melds the preceding 48 exercises into a profoundly complete movement sequence, the Small Circle Form. The writing is quiet, clear, and illuminated with wisdom without ever being florid or pretentious. Whatever your fitness level or interest, I recommend ...you buy this book!

Maybe more sketches to show shifting of feet/body/arms/head. Indications of weight shifting Beginners may find it difficult to translate into actual movements. If you really want to do this style, get a DVD and/or check out youtube. It's very hard for beginners to do this from a book.

Very good book on learning a basic form of tai chi. My husband learned this form in 1 week and became very good at it in 1.5 weeks.Very clear and easy to read, follow and understand.
