I just now finished reading this, and I really really enjoyed it. I wish I'd had it on hand when I was teaching a game design class a few years ago. I heard about it on "The Big Idea" section of Scalzi's blog (http://whatever.scalzi.com/2015/03/17/the-big-idea-brian-upton/). Neuroscience? Microsemiotics? Applications to literary criticism? I sent off for a copy.I'll leave a review of the technical content to others, and will instead comment on the results of my experience of reading. (Read the book, and you may see why that could be a natural move to make right after reading the book!)* I want to talk about it with my friends. And then talk about it with some people I've never met, for contrast.* I want to go back and replay some games from a couple decades ago and introspect on how I'm engaging with them.* I want to go to a modern art museum and try out some new approaches to looking at what I've traditionally categorized as "trash my 3 year old could make".* I want to run a series of experiments that involve exposing different groups of people to new games.* I want to read up on deconstructionism a bit more, because while I don't think I'm going to start liking it, I think I can see an interesting option for disliking it less.* I want to design a game that synergistically exploits both narrative and gameplay and blows a big fat raspberry at the various authors that say the two are intrinsically opposed.* And then I want to play it.

This is definitely one of the best books on game design that I have read.A frequent complaint I have about game design theory is that it often breaks down when trying to apply it to an actual game. Things like MDA and the lenses of game design sound good on paper but in my opinion, don't work very well when you're in the middle of a game project and there's a million different moving pieces all at once that are constantly evolving.In situations like these, you need simple and flexible design rules that allow you to look at the smaller scale and NOT the bigger picture, because looking at the bigger picture all the time only means you're missing out on the short term effects of your design which exist at the micro level, which is disastrous in the long run for the feel of your game.Upton's idea of "constraints" and "state" and their interplay, constitutes a very adroit and flexible way of thinking about the effect that your design has on the structures of play, and is in my opinion a vital and important part of game design theory that deserves wider recognition.

My thinking on this book has continued to change since reading it. I was initially frustrated with some of the ways it used theory (semiotics and narrative) because it doesn't dive deeply into these topics. But Upton does a great job of tackling these topics and their connections with each other in a way that's fresh, and moves the discussion forward. So while it might not be a lengthy treatment of whatever field you're from, it's a wonderful exploration of how different fields in game studies can come together to understand games and their meanings.

I LOVE this calendar. It's incredibly inspiring with the short stories about amazing women and girls from the past and present. It also has specific days in history that matter to women, such as the day abortion was legalized in the U.S., the day the supreme court upheld the women's right to vote, and even birthdays like Michelle Obama's birthday.The paper is like a thinner, matte cardstock, so it's sturdy and still accepts all kinds of pens, pencils, markers.The calendar dates are a dark purple instead of black which I also like.The spaces to write on each day are plenty, even for someone like me who writes everything on their wall calendar.It's really pretty. I'm more impressed than o thought I'd be and my 11yo daughter also really likes it, which is something she has never said about one of my calendars before!Just two things I do not like about it but not enough for me to not recommend this. I do hope they change this in future editions though!!1) There are no vertical lines between the dates. I need those lines to visually separate days. I will be taking a ruler and adding this lines. I just wish they were already there.2) the month is on the bottom of the page and I wish it were at the top. I understand the month at the bottom makes it easier to flip through to find future dates, however just like I need the vertical lines, I need the month above the numbers and it throws me off when it's on the bottom.I knew these 2 things before I bought the calendar thanks to the product images, but I made an exception, normally I would not consider a calendar without these 2 features, and I'm glad I made that exception.Highly recommend it!

I always loved reading Dominick Dunne's articles in Vanity Fair and I also have his book "The Way We Lived Then" so I was very anxious to read this book - and glad that I did. This book is a biography of his life but also provides a view of how he covered his daughter's murder trial, the OJ Simpson trial, OJ's 2nd trial, and Phil Spector's trial. It also discusses how he wrote all of his novels and provides back stories about who the characters are really based on. Covers his friendships, his downfall from Hollywood, and how he rose up again to become the darling of the rich.The writing style of this author is really good and this book was hard to put down. There is a lot of Hollywood inside information provided (e.g., who knew that Nancy (Davis) Reagan was known in Hollywood for a unique talent she had to make men happy). This book dishes on lots of people but mostly, of course, on Nick (as Dominick was called by his friends).There were a couple of things that I didn't like: 1) the author's continuous writing about Dominick's homosexuality - OK, I get it, he was gay; and 2) wrong facts (example: author states that Dominick visited the same health clinic in Germany where Farah Fawcet died....really? If I recall, she died in Los Angeles and NOT in Germany. Makes me wonder if the author got other "facts" incorrect but since I'm not privy to all these Hollywood people and their private lives, as a reader, I have to assume that all other things in the book are true.If you liked Dominick Dunne as an author and columnist; if you like reading the scoop about Hollywood and other celebrities - people both still living and those who have died, then this book is for you.

Dominick Dunne was a great crime reporter, a best-selling novelist, and an unrelenting gossip monger. But the true story of his own life is more compelling, hilarious, and heartbreaking than anything he wrote. Bob Hofler’s biography captures the man in full—along with a sensational supporting cast of scandalous movie stars, criminals, and media personalities who, for better and for much worse, helped mold our celebrity culture.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dunne in the early 80's not too long after his daughter died. At that time I was a young man and he struck up a conversation with me and eventually invited me back to his hotel room in the most elegant way. I declined but joined him the next day for a drink as he had the most fascinating stories. I didn't really know who he was at the time other than Dominique's father but he would stay in touch when he came through town. He was a kind and fascinating man who seemed very conflicted but I always appreciated his kindness and his not taking offense to our relationship staying platonic. The book in my opinion treats him quite fairly.

Well written, really flows. It does its subject proud. I enjoyed it very much.Dunne had such an interesting life. He met and was involved, often just peripherally, the lives of so many famous people. And he had a heart, even as he dropped names and sought approval from society types and magazine editors. The book goes into all this and shows Dunne in all his facets. His good and bad points end up as endearing.

In late 2009, I read and reviewed Dominick Dunne's last book, "Too Much Money", which was a sequel to his earlier, and better, book, "People Like Us", which was my favorite Dunne novel. in my review of "Too Much Money", I wrote that Dominick Dunne appeared to "out" himself in the book. (The book had more than a few gratuitous gay sex scenes, which just wasn't common in Dunne's previous writings). Well, imagine my surprise, when reading author Robert Hofler's new and dishy book, "Money, Murder, and Dominick Dunne", that Dunne was gay, even though he had been married and had three children.Hofler's book is a breezy and deliciously dishy book about Dunne and the people he either loved or hated. There were many in both groups. Dunne' life had both tragedy and great success, after a period of down-and-out drug and alcohol abuse. His beloved daughter Dominique, an actress, was murdered by her boyfriend and the man received a light sentence. That began Dominick's life-long interest - I don't want to call it an "obsession - in criminal justice, or "injustice", as is often the case. He became a writer - and quite successful, at that - after years on a downward progression. He covered many trials, all of famous people - he once told a fellow author he didn't cover the trials of non important people. His books were mostly fiction; he wrote nonfiction for "Vanity Fair".Dominick Dunne lived into his 80s. He left a strong record of work. Robert Hofler's book is a nuanced look at a very interesting man, often at odds with himself. And it really is "dishy"!

I enjoyed this book. Dominick Dunne was an unique individual that seemed to have a rollercoaster life that was incredibly interesting. I first recollect seeing him attending the O J Simpson trial and was taken by his reaction to the verdict. He looked positively shocked. As was, of course, all of America. Dominick Dunne was a complex man. He could be difficult and snobbish but also compassionate and loving. He seemed to have planned his exciting life right up until the end, with some twists and turns that made it extraordinary. His existence made the world a little more fascinating.

Bear in mind this is a beginner's book designed for an audience who probably knows what an Index fund is but that's about it. I read a long review of the book last night and what struck me is that the author gave very little deference to the four main pillars of this book, Meaning Moat Management and Margin of Safety, basically saying they were good, and then concentrating the criticisms on the smaller stuff. The reader has to realize that a subtitle of "In just 5 hours per week!" won't sell a book. You'd be a fool to think that 15 minutes per week is sufficient time to evaluate stocks and manage your portfolio. Though if I didn't already listen to his podcast I would have stopped reading the book after the first 20 pages because it's full of the usual "Get rich quick! No time at all! You'll never lose money! Guaranteed! It's easy!" lines that a poor salesman would use. Likewise, it's pretty obvious the $1000 turned into a million was only the starting cash and much more money was dumped into it later. A similar example is used later in the book of a couple making lots of money on just one company, but it involved them selling at absolute peaks and buying at absolute valleys.Still, overall the book is a great lesson in how to evaluate a company and what to watch for. You also end up with stock valuations which aren't far off from what many other instructors get you. I recommend the book quite a bit to anyone wanting to learn how to do it themselves and potentially make a little more money than an Index fund could get you. Granted, I would read many other books as well, because I sure wouldn't leave my retirement into the hands of one single book, no matter who the author is.

Excellent book with a few flaws. His valuation method is fairly good, but the reader needs to know that stocks are not randomly discounted by Wall Street for no reason. He asks the reader to research the potential companies you want to buy, but when you do there is always dirty laundry which has caused the stock to drop. Naturally it is up to the reader to decide if the bad news which caused a price drop is significant enough to cause a long term issue, or if the price should rebound. The second flaw is his model for getting in and out of stocks based on a few technical indicators. He instructs the reader when to get out based on these findings, but doesn't use the criteria at all when deciding if he should buy a stock to begin with which could result in mixed signals. The book was also published in 2006 and many of the websites he mentions as tools for research (including his own) simply no longer exist or have changed to the point of being obsolete. The third issue is his opinion that diversity isn't important, that being invested in just a few stocks is better. If you followed his advice, your portfolio took a huge hit recently when one of his star examples lost 37% at the next open due to an after hours earnings call. Again, some very sound ideas, but know you should adjust some of the ideas to better protect yourself and get out at more opportune times.

This book is a fantastic introduction into value investing and making sure you don’t follow the stock market hype train (I’m looking at you Bitcoin).While Phil Town lays out this book in a really easy to read and digest manner, utilizing his method to invest in stocks can be difficult for these reasons:- You will need to spend 5-10 hours for due diligence on any company you evaluate. You will probably need to evaluate 10-20 stocks before you should invest in one assuming you’re buying a stock as if it’s a company you want to own. Don’t forget that you also need to carry out due diligence on the industry that the stocks belong in. At a minimum, you’ll spend several hours understanding what makes the industry tick and the various parties in the industry(incumbents, suppliers, new entrants, customers). If you really want to set yourself apart, you could do a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, threats) analysis on the company of choice.- Information can be hard to come by (which Town notes in his book). In terms of historical data, most websites only go 3-5 years back. Additionally, it can be hard to find future equity growth rates unless you use a paid website like Factset or Zacks.If I had more time on my hands, I would love to dig deeper and utilize Town’s strategy, but, alas I don’t. I’m going to stick with index funds since you’ll get your guaranteed 5-7% per year over the long haul with only market risk to account for. I’ll likely never get 15% returns year over year, but I’m perfectly happy focusing my limited time elsewhere.

I attended his free seminar 5 years ago. I finally got down to reading his book. He has good advice for stock investors and how to do it if you do your homework. It takes more than 15 minutes in the beginning, more like 1 hour per stock to do all the calculations and he recommends 5 stocks to pick. That is 5 hours. Then you have to follow it diligently every business day. Not as easy as he says in the book. If it is, then he would keep it secret. True, the calculations are simple, but they are a lot for each stock. It can be done, but it takes a lot of practice, like anything else.

Wonderful book for new investors! Phil is so great at simplifying the process and strategies. I personally love numbers so I find the calculations to be very easy. But he also provides a website with multiple calculators that do all the work for you. I attended his transformational workshop a couple weeks ago and I was kicking myself for not having read this book first. I’m taking the workshop again in a couple months to solidify all that I’m learning now. If you want to learn how to be an educated value investor, read this book!
